6÷20÷2011: My theater company is teching a show at Gorilla Tango today and we went to Avocado to pick up sandwiches and were blown away. We all got the portabella po’ boys and we were all thinking what my brother said. «it tastes like it was made by the hand of God.» They are a small café and make everything right there. The mocha, sandwiches and Italian sodas were all fantastic. You get a big sandwich on Italian bread and chips for $ 7. Mostly vegan/veg fare but they have some meat(chicken, tuna salad). Next time I’m going to try the eggplant po’ boy. 8⁄12 update: so sad they’re closed now.

I had high expectations, they were not met. This place is okay. It’s not a destination for me(I live on other end of city), but can see how if I lived in area I’d rate it higher. The bakery did not offer much and expected the cookies to be bigger and much better tasting for $ 1.50 each.

Avocado was right next to the Gorilla Tango Theatre(which has no wait area, so we headed here) and has giant portions of healthy, fresh food. It’s lovely! It was pretty empty when we were there, but I liked that you could get sliced banana or somesuch instead of chips as a side. Very holistic and friendly overall. :)

this place is super cute! i am always looking for a place around where i work for lunch(milwaukee/western/armitage) and the options can be few and far between, so i’m so glad to see this place open! i just went there and had the avocado wrap to-go, the guy working was super nice and the place is darling! The menu is full of salads, yummy veggie-friendly sandwiches, they have breakfast sanwiches too and soups. i love love love soup and its hard to find anywhere that sells soup around here other than walgreens, so that’s a BIG bonus for me. the wrap was really fresh and good and they gave a bag of chips to go w/, which is a nice touch(hey, i like any free side these days) I’ll definitely be back soon to try the rest of the menu– so glad you are there!

I have a huge crush on this place, and you can tell everyone you know, I don’t mind at all! Adorable café with magazines you can look at while waiting for your good to be freshly prepared. Where to begin? The eggplant po boy: vegan, the eggplant isn’t breaded(yay!) and comes with a side of cantaloupe, which was nice and perfectly ripe. And it’s on a toasted baguette! Delicious, dairy-free, and pairs well with the lentil soup! Which is nice and tasty-more like a french version of lentil soup than Middle eastern. Another time I had peach Italian soda and it made me really, really happy. The barista was perfect with the amount of syrup that they added. Only thing I don’t really recommend is the avocado dip, but that’s my personal taste– it tasted like mayonnaise to me. They have a giant chalkboard that you can write on, too! I also love the paper lanterns, umbrellas, and flowers that hang from the ceiling, it just makes everything very cheerful while staying chill. I will be back, and I’m bringing friends. And I will use their free wi-fi.

Overall I give it 3 stars I would have liked to give it more but nothing I had was memorable. The basil chicken salad sandwich was good but didn’t set it apart from other sandwiches in the city. The menu didn’t have many options. Overall I wouldn’t make a special trip there but if I was passing by again I may give it another whirl.

I’m a meat eater and usually places like Avocado Eatery and Café are too«granola» for me. I finally went in about a week ago and got The Not So Token Portabella Poboy and I was impressed. The Poboy was a very nice sandwich. Sorry, it’s been a few days since I came in so I don’t exactly remember all the flavors but I was impressed enough that I plan on making multiple visits to check out the rest of their veggie and vegan fare. I ordered out so I can’t say too much about the actual place other than the music was mofo’in loud. Otherwise, I guess it seemed nice enough in there.

I was on the blue line and got hungry to we stopped by… next time I’ll take it to go! Its 101 °F today and they did not have their AC on. The guy working behind the counter went to a couple of different tables and explained that they were out of some ingredient and the customers had to order something else or substitute. The wifi was very weak. However, that being said the food was very good. I ordered the Portabella poboy and my lady friend got the Avocado Edamame spread. My Portabella poboy sandwich was fresh and flavorful. My lady friend is a vegetarian so she loves it when I find places like Avocado Eatery. I have so far resisted catching a STV from her but not sure how long I can hold on to my carnivore roots. Anyway, her Avocado Edamame spread came with slices of pita and french bread, and a generous amount of the spread. We also split a giant PB cookie(girl working there said she would warm it up for us because its better that way, but then came back and said oven is not working, Lame!). Total came out near $ 20, so about average for two people. The café has a giant chalk board to write messages on. I liked the décor, and plenty of outlets(if you need to plug in). They should play some music, it was eerily quiet. I suggest you order something to go, especially if you are a veg head. I might give it another try since its steps away from the Western stop on the Blue line.

This is my new favorite sandwich place in Chicago. Avocado has a really interesting take on fusion cuisine and it really enhances their food rather than just being a novelty. Their curry hummus was amazing and though I haven’t gotten to try any of their soups other than the lentil, it was a very nice complement to the eggplant po’ boy. The lady grills a mean eggplant.

yes theirs is a small-ish menu, but definitely enough to choose from — and they’re only 2 months old. keeping in line w their moniker i tried the avocado wrap($ 5) and it was very good. lots of flavor dancing happening as work your way through the cucumber, spinach, avocado wedge, black bean spread, etc. the avocado lime vinaigrette is delicious — but maybe a little oily(IMO, its worth it). homemade lentil soup($ 3.5) was also spot on. tasty and cheap, a welcome addition to the neighborhood’s «quick food/take out» spots.

The husband & I have been here twice now. The décor is cute and comfortable. Free wi fi. Bridgeport coffee is delicious. Lentil soup is terrific. Fruit tarts(from outside bakery) have too much crust and too little filling. Dips are terrific. I’ve tried the tuna sandwich and the portabello sandwich. Both were excellent. The husband had the avocado wrap today and was a bit disappointed. Last time, he had the chicken salad which he enjoyed. The younger daughter enjoyed the eggplant sandwich today. The staff is very friendly. I highly recommend this place.

While pining for a sandwich and looking to try something other than the ‘olé standbys, I found Avocado. The inside is charming, and the ladies I talked to who were working were very friendly. I believe one of them may have been the owner; she was quite helpful. This was a bit ago, so I can’t quite recall the exact sandwich I had. It was an eggplant sandwich, and I remember it having a very tasty spread on it. I remember the eggplant being prepared well, also. I really like this place. My only complaint is that the bread that was used for my sandwich became a little soggy too quickly. If the sandwich had a more ‘sturdy’ bread, it would be a perfect little sandwich. I should also note that I visited Avocado within the first week of their opening, so maybe certain things(such as the bread), have been tweaked. I will definitely be visiting again.

I found this place on Unilocal and am always looking for new veggie option places near my boyfriends house. The Café was super cute, great vibe, friendly staff, and comfy. I grabbed the poor boy sandwich, which was great. I can’t wait to try the avocado wrap and one of the salads. So glad to have found this place and hope others do too!

Avocado is a charming new eatery located on Milwaukee Ave.(near Western Ave.) with a menu focused on vegetarian options. I liked that the vegetarian/vegan items weren’t heavy on meat substitutes such as tofu, seitan, etc. — sometimes it’s nice to have the good old basics. We ordered a few items here, I recommend the avocado spinach wrap, made with avocado, tomato, onions, spinach leaves, carrots, cucumbers, black bean spread, and lime vinaigrette. There were also several vegan desserts, I opted for the massive vegan cookie and thought it was pretty good. My bf laughed about this, but I mentioned that the cookie tasted like a breakfast cookie(if such a term exists). Anyway, I definitely recommend Avocado for an early brunch/café setting — it seems more of a café/hangout spot. I rate them as 3.5(but will bump them up to 4 since there isn’t a 3.5 option).

I’ve been waiting patiently for this place to open ever since Vella Café and now Tea Essence have closed. I stopped by yesterday in hopes of a tuna sandwich… the tuna hadn’t been yet so I went with the chicken salad sandwich. I’m trying really hard to be a vegetarian, but not hard enough apparently because I inhaled that chicken salad. The basil mixed in with the chicken was fantastic. Until 5⁄31 you get a free sample of spread or dip. The 4 cheese dip was amazing!!! Parm, feta maybe gouda and some other salty, wonder cheese I’m in love with. Lastly, I needed something sweet to complete the meal. A giant oatmeal, carrot & raisin cookie. I’ve been off sweets for a few weeks so this cookie was good. I like raisins, but not cooked in my food. Someone should consider replacing the raisins with walnuts.
