Flowers. Can these arrangements even be called flowers? For what Epoch creates is art with nature as these have to be some of the most incredible arrangements that I have ever seen! You won’t find your typical florist shop here. Oh no. There are no refrigerated cases full of languishing carnations and gladiolas. No teenager in the back winding florist tape around a rose to make a corsage. No cheap bouquets that you can grab and go. For none of these have the magic that Epoch floral creates. No. What you will find here is a talented team of floral artists, who go to the flower wholesaler each day and pick the most unusual flowers that you will ever see and then bend and twist and arrange them into arrangements that make people gasp in awe and ask«is that a flower?» and«how’d they do that?» I use Epoch every year for Administrative Assistants Day and my assistants run around the office comparing and contrasting each others arrangements. And recently, a friend, knowing how much I love the arrangements from here, sent me my own unusual arrangement. A green ceramic bowl done in striking colors of hot fuchsia and yellow and orange with the only flowers I recognized being the orange and pink roses and the yellow tulips laid across the top. What those swirly puffy things were is unbeknownst to me! So striking! The kind of arrangement that everyone who walks into my office comments on. Epoch also offers floral arranging classes on Saturday mornings(sign up required) where they take you first to the flower wholesaler and then teach you to make your own amazing arrangement. I’ve been to one and quickly learned that floral arranging would never be my next career path, at least not the kind of flower art that they do here but I ended up with a nice piece with a little bit of help! So the next time the usual just won’t do, check out Epoch. While the prices may be higher, this is truly a case of getting what you paid for!

I used to go to Epoch a lot when they were located in the West Loop and I worked across the street, to get flowers for both my home and the office. Even though that wasn’t big budget at all, the owners were friendly and helpful. Once I bought some roses that faded by the next day, and when I went back, before I could say a word, they said, «Did you have problems with the roses?» and gave me the pick of the store. Great guys, with great taste.

LOVE the store front. If I owned a store, I would make it look like EPOCH but it would be here in SF with me. Friendly service in the front.

Epoch is a fabulous place to go for edgy, avant garde floral creations! They’re floral designers rather than a pick up a bouquet to go type of place. I saw some of their work for a company party I worked for and it was amazing. They import flowers from all over the world too. There’s also a pie shop which has fantastic pies as well(for around $ 26 a pie, they also sell by the slice). Bump down the stars Update: I went in for a meeting to get a quote for them to do my wedding. They promised me one within the week. After a month I called and they said they were still working on it. Then after six weeks had passed I called and they claimed they sent it and I must not have gotten the email. They said they’d resend it that day. Then two days later I got an email saying they were sorry it had taken so long but they couldn’t do it for the budget I had suggested. No quote, discussion, or anything, just a «no» and a «sorry» six weeks later. I was really disappointed, I thought they were more professional than that.

I stopped in here on several occasions on my way to and from UIC. This is one of those shops where you look in the windows and think — Can people really live like this? Minimalist, decluttered and simplistic to the point of elegance? They apparently can — and this is where they shop. I thought it was just a floral shop, but could not find any floral fridges to choose from, I managed to leave with a centerpiece looking floral sculpture thing. Really, I am never at a loss for words, but this is one of those — only in the city — type stores. You have to see it to love it. You can’t miss it, red brick and black exterior with epoch on the windows in frosted fonts — as cool and reserved as the interior.
