The Buckingham

The location in Lakeshore East can’t be beat! Steps to the Harris Theater, the Lake beautiful workout room overlooking Millennium Park, the Lake, the Buckingham fountain, and more. Staff very accommodating and friendly, especially the doormen/​women.

If you are under 60 years old, this is not the place for you! Or if you like your bike stolen, don’t live here either. (By the way, I think the first review is for the wrong building). The building is older and many of the residents have lived here probably since it was built. The board is prodominently run by old, white, retired doctors, or their snobby wives who stare you up and down in the lobby and elevator. Decisions are made to accomodate the old folks, with a bias towards the younger people who live here.
It is marketed that there is bike storage. But, wait, as soon as you move in they will tell you all the spots are taken, and there is a waiting list. We are currently renting from a unit owner, and I think part of the run-​around we keep getting from management about the bike storage is because we are renters and not directly paying the outrageous association fee to them. I counted tonight and there are 30+ empty bike racks, and only 11 on the floor that need to be placed on the racks. So what are they going to do with the other 20+ spots? AND today my bike went missing. I had it hanging on one of the racks that had been empty for over 3 months. Last Saturday, supposedly the maintenance team moved my bike, along with a few others, to another storage space. When I went to pick it up today, it was gone. The management office was already closed when we realized my bike was most likely taken by a maintenace staff, so tomorrow morning they will be receiving a phone call from me.
The office staff are rude, although today the front desk lady was surprisingly pleasant to me. The day we moved in, my truck driver was trying to find the loading dock using the management’s outdated, hand drawn map that made no sense. He was frustrated and called the office to get directions. The office lady then threathened to not allow my movers to unload my stuff, because she wasn’t sure what state of mind he was in and may be a threat to the residents. Sorry lady, but if you don’t let me move in when I am paying $ 350 fee, then you need to worry more about me!
It’s a great location. I love the neighbohood and the park that we look down upon. And the doormen/​women are wonderful! They make living here easier. But I know there are better buildings we could be living in. I currently work for an apartment management company and we would never treat out residents like my husband and I are being treated. Next move we will be sure NOT to rent from an individual, but instead rent at an apartment building, where we will not be discrimunated against.

My friend stayed here for her summer internship, and I have to say this place is pretty awesome. Though I found out how much she’s paying, so I suppose it’s not an amazing deal. Still, for living in the Loop, it’s a pretty nice apartment complex. The furniture is all very modern, nice white couches and creative light fixtures. There is a workout room and a nice big study room with computers and wireless internet.
The coolest thing is that I saw an ad for it in a bathroom at two bars in Ann Arbor. It must be the place where people from out of town stay for summer jobs and such. I guess there are something like 15 floors, and there were three bedrooms in my friend’s unit — with two bathrooms, a kitchen and a living room.
It kind of reminds me of a combination between a dorm and hotel. I wasn’t complaining though… they provide their own beds, and my friend had an extra so I didn’t have to sleep on the couch!
