I went to Utrecht Art Supplies several times while going to school at the Art Institute of Chicago. It’s right by the school so it’s a good place to buy the art supplies I needed for class. I’m usually able to find most supplies I need, but it’s not the largest art store so they might not have everything you’re looking for. If you’re a student, you get a discount which is always a plus. The art supplies are pretty discounted so it’s a good place for students to buy art supplies.

much better than Blick. everything is so easy to find, and the place is never overly crowded. you can find any art material you have in mind.

This place is has a great selection and friendly staff. It is on-par with Blick that is closer to the center of the loop. I’ve been to both shops multiple times to buy supplies for my business. Utrect seems to have a wider selection for painters(Oils, acrylics, watercolor, canvases, etc.). Utrecht is also slightly less expensive. Since I don’t paint, I tend to just go to the one I’m closest to for general art supplies. [Utrecht is also a lot of fun to say.] :-P

Two art store reviews in a day? no, I’m not all of a sudden becoming an artist, more that I keep picking things up in various places for a drafting class in the loop. Utrecht is right by my class and my mom has spoken highly of utrecht for a long time(her artistic abilities have not even closely been passed down to me), so seeing that it was on my way, I stopped in to pick up some needed supplies. There was a lot of room to move around and everything was pretty easy to find. One of the people working there quickly helped me to the compass and protractor that I needed. When I went to check out, they gave me a card for free and it gave me a 10% discount. Most of all though, everyone working there was friendly and though it wasn’t packed to the rafters with art supplies, there was a good amount there.

Awesomeness in a retail store. All the right stuff. Within walking distance of work. Friendly, knowledge filled dudes behind counter. Art Smart card. Happiness. I just wish they sold clothes & groceries, then I could get everything I need in life here.

This is a great store for all of your basic art supplies. It’s close to a few art schools, so they tend to run out of items at the beginning of the semesters. I recommend that you call first if you really need a specific item.

I’m not a fan of Utrecht. I think their selection is pretty paltry compared to Pearl and Blick. I venture to Utrecht one day because I heard about a sale. However, I was so not impressed with the canvases on sale. They looked pretty shoddy. Also, the sales people were non-existent. Sorry Utrecht, I probably will not visit again.

I’m not an artist in the traditional sense. I’ve tried drawing and painting, sculpture and song but I’ve found Photoshop to be my best brush, my screen the perfect canvas. So what the hell was I doing in Utrecht Art Supply on Michigan Avenue? Buying an easel. My work needed to display a sign at an event, we needed an easel and Utrecht was the closest art supply store to our south loop office. I had no idea how much I was going to spend walking in and after first glance at some admittedly impressive displays, I was resigned to plunking down at least $ 50. Then, out of the corner of my eye I saw the runt of the litter, a little easel of plain and lightweight wood with no frills, bells, whistles or flair. And even better was its $ 15 price tag. I left with that easel and am very happy. Viva Utrecht!

Great staff. Very good if you forgot something for class and you need it quick; paper, pens, markers. Not a huge selection but I have never had a problem getting what I need.

Not the best selection. It is on the small side and pricey especially compared to Pearl and The Art Store. But the location can’t be beat, if you live or work or study in the area. The staff here is very friendly and knowledgeable. They mostly just carry paints, canvas, brushes, paper, pencils, charcoal, etc., so mostly just painting and drawing supplies.

Excellent art supply store and friendly staff. It is located not too far away from the Art Institute, and occasionally you can get some good gossip on what’s happpening in the art scene.(Note: Not the best place for craft supplies… Pearl is your best bet for that, but this would be your spot for fine art supplies.)

Best art supply store ever! Huge store with a huge selection, and they are a great store to go to if you are a student b/c they tend to student’s needs.
