Last weekend I hosted a family reunion. Kelly Gomez was helpful, honest and great at planning with me. Even though our group was only twenty and her minimum number for a catering event, Kelly spent a great deal of time communicating about my choices and immediately sent me a contract. Now, the 5 part: the staff had the food perfectly packed in a hot box and ready to load at the exact minute we arrived. Chafing dishes with sterno, every utensil needed, salad in a beautiful bowl. Oh, the food, you ask? 5 absolutely! Best pot roast we ever had, spicy chicken, loaded with garlic mashed Yukons, polenta, fresh salad, rolls. I think everything on the menu must be great. What I chose was perfect!

probably the worst service and food that I have had in Chico. It took them three attempts to bring me hot food… eggs were cold, spuds were cold. The potatoes consisted of five 1⁄8 slices of 50cent size potatoes(way over priced for the quality and the quantity). Save your hard earned money and go to Morning Thunder or The Roost. They didn’t even want to talk about the issues, They told me «Don’t come back and don’t call us ever again.» They could not bare the truth. If I were anyone wanting Catering, I would seek another caterer. The owners don’t know what they doing.

This restaurant serves breakfast and lunch. We came for the breakfast and we weren’t disappointed. Their menu is diverse for breakfasts served all over the world. I enjoyed looking at these but my more conventional husband was disappointed that there wasn’t more basic choices like omelettes. He settled on their regular pancakes which he really liked, but two weren’t enough for him so he had to order another order. I had the Lemon Ricotta Pancakes with berry compote and they were delicious! The service here is excellent and the two gentleman waiters we had were very friendly. Next time I might branch out and try one of their«dishes inspired from flavors of the world» such as the Akoori from India. Try this place!

I’ve been there three times now. Very interesting and tasty menu, good service. My only complaint would be that it is extremely noisy.

Place is nice, and staff are friendly but the service was lacking. Brought a friend here for her birthday and arrived around 10:30am. Took 30min just to get our Latte and Chai Tea which they forgot we ordered and almost an hour to get our food. When we got it, it seemed like it had been sitting a while since both of our plates were lukewarm and my friends pancakes were soggy. They apologized for the wait and offered my friend a birthday discount card which was nice, but they need to step it up. I had just suggested we pay for our drinks and find some place else to eat when our food finally arrived. If we had been in a hurry we would have had to leave. The taste was good, but portions seemed small. Willing to give them another shot. I’m hoping they were just understaffed that day.

I have been many times for breakfast and have yet to walk away thinking it was a good experience. The menu is very promising and the resulting food is pretty good(doesn’t really live up to the promise of the menu but still pretty good) but the service has been consistently awful. Food-Ok if not a little bland. Service– very sub standard. Always have to flag someone down to refill water or coffee. Always have to ask for the check. EVERY time I have been there the waiter has forgot something that was supposed to come with the meal(ie toast, syrup etc) and someone had to flag ‘em down and ask for it. This is a favorite of many people in Chico but I think I’m done giving them yet another chance.

I just came from lunch and I have to say it was great.(it usually is) I had the BELT sandwich on a whole grain bread. The egg turned it into a 2.5 napkin meal and that just the way I like it. I had the Argentine burger before and it’s a 5+ napkin meal. Good but messy! The bacon was great and so were the avocados. Service was excellent as always… I’ve never gone wrong here. I only wish that they had a dinner menu.

First time in Chico. Stumbled on Roots for breakfast. Had the papusas … with eggs, black beans and rice. FANTASTIC. Service was as good as the food . Very clean. The only problem is that I wanted to try half of the items on the menu … but could only pick one. They have many unique items on the breakfast menu … I am guessing that they are all good.

HIGHLYRECOMMEND. Just went for brunch. My hubby ordered the lemon ricotta pancakes, which were seriously phenomenal. I got the NY eggs benedict, which was great, and my mother-in-law had the blintzes, which were amazing. Very fun menu, with lots of interesting, international choices in addition to the usual fare. Loved the friendly, young, artsy waitstaff.

So good! Food was delicious, fresh, and flavorful. And the Mexican Mocha is to die for. The servers were also incredibly friendly and polite. Definitely one of the best spots in Chico for brunch.

Fantastic! Varied selection with internationally influenced choices, all sure to please. Great coffee. Nice décor/atmosphere. Great prices. Friendly staff. Can’t wait to go back for the curried veggies and breakfast pakoras! The Mediterranean breakfast is amazing as well!

Came here for brunch and overall disappointed by the experience. Very good mexican latte with great flavor, and super attentive service. What’s disappointing was the food itself. A large number of the dishes contained rice and beans so if you’re not in the mood for rice and beans(such as wanting potatoes), you had very few options. The Mediterranean breakfast option was one of the few vegetarian options available and was very oily and bland. The pupusas breakfast option was very bland and I had to add lots of salt, pepper, and the pumpkin seed hot sauce that was on the table to get any sort of real flavor. Really liked the service and coffee but food itself was so bland, would not go again.

Roots catered my daughters wedding and I was not I pressed. They failed to deliver on what we requested and was on the contract. I emailed the owner to discuss my unhappiness and she replied with a VERY long email making excuses for their lack of professionalism. She never apologized for the mistakes and will not refund us for the service we requested. As mother of the bride I would not recommend Roots for a wedding. I had my own business for over 20 years and I always made sure the customer was happy. Roots owner, Kelly Gomez just wanted to be right! That’s not how you run a business!

Roots Catering is one of the few places in Chico which takes brunch reservations. This is great if you have a group of people, so to kick off our weekend brunch series, I came here with H and her out-of-town friend S. Walking into Roots Catering was like entering an earthly sanctuary. That was calming, since I had just finished a 5 mi run that day. That also meant that I was starving, so I needed to order something with protein and fibers STAT. Luckily, the restaurant wasn’t too busy at the time, and our waiter was attentive, so I got their Taste of Mediterranean item in no time. The poached eggs, steamed vegetables, potatoes, and fruit bowl were a relief for my growling stomach. And it makes me wonder about their tasting menu, which I’ll definitely return next time to try!

I just can’t give this place any more tries. I live close by and have been here 6 times, and each time it was hit or miss. Let me start out by saying that, with the exception of 1 time, everything I’ve ordered has been good, and some of it great. It’s a unique menu with some really exciting choices… but somehow they seem to F up something almost every time. I usually call my order in for pick up. The 1st time was fine. My Huevoes Benedicto had a delicious chorizo gravy with what seemed like a housemade English muffin and perfectly poached eggs. Even the side of pinto beans was delicious! The next time, I ordered the same thing, and I can only assume they put the box into the bag sideways because when I opened it at home, the food was all slopped together on the side in a(delicious) leaky mess. To their credit, after I complained, they replaced my order. The next time, the food was cold, particularly the bacon(no exaggeration, it seemed refrigerated rather than recently cooked). Another time, 3 of the 4 plates at our table had mistakes… and on and on it has gone. Today, after trying to call my order in 3 times, only to go to a voicemail message, I drove over to place my order. I walked in at 11:01am and was told they stopped serving breakfast at 11:00! There are too many great breakfast places in Chico(Coda, Sin, Roost) to waste time on a place that consistently fails to get even the little things right.

We come here for breakfast about once a month and really LOVE what they’re doing. Truly a nice eclectic alternative for the inner foodie in you. I try something different every time I come and I have yet to be disappointed. Hands down the best breakfast sandwich in Chico. But the Pupusas, West Coast Sunrise, Lemon Ricotta Pancakes and Eri’s Thai breakfast are all solid offerings. And the pumpkin hot sauce that adorns the tables is magically delicious. The only bummer is that they’re closed on Saturdays.

We had high expectations after reading the reviews and menu but it was a bit let down. My husband had ordered a mexican breakfast but the egg was too runny for his taste n the pinto beans and rice was not seasoned enough. My lemon ricotta pancakes was alright. The compote was a bit too sweet for me and with the whipped cream on top it was more sweeter than what I like. The Mexican mocha was also ok. They were nice enough to substitute the bacon with potatoes. The potatoes were cut in slices and deep fried and seasoned well and i really liked them. The concept is interesting and décor is nice. Our server was nice and the overall experience was good. Food was just not as good as expected but that could just be us. We will be back and try something different!

I’ve been to Roots twice for lunch and both times it was very tasty. I had the shrimp tacos and Texas Melt and enjoyed both. Portions aren’t huge, but are satisfying. Most meals are $ 10. I loved the side salad that was one of the options with the sandwich; came with strawberries, walnuts, red onions, feta, and their house dressing– so yummy! I’ve never been to a place with such an eclectic menu, and am surprised they are able to do such diverse things well.

Came here for breakfast on a Sunday(they serve only breakfast on Sundays) and the food was great! I got the Southern Mexico and my bf got the Thai dish. Can’t remember the spelling of the actual names. There was no wait when we came around 10am. The menu had a bunch of food inspired by different parts of the world. 5 stars for its creativity, but 4 stars overall. The drinking water smelled funky to me and my silverware weren’t as clean as i expected. Definitely a place to check out if you’re in town!

This restaurant is consistently delicious! I’ve been here for both breakfast and lunch and have never been disappointed. Sometimes you have to wait a little longer for your food, but the wait is worth it. They are closed on Saturday, but are open on Sunday. If they had mimosas it would be heavenly, but the food makes it worth it.

I wish I had tried this place sooner! I had the El Salvador breakfast and my boyfriend had the eggs benedict. I loved the El Salvador with pupusas topped with a vinaigrette slaw, bacon, rice, black beans, and two eggs. Was craving poached eggs at the time but next time would definitely get it with eggs over easy. Very delicious and not a heavy breakfast. The boyfriend liked the benedict, though he said he would have liked the hollandaise to be more lemony. And we both found our poached eggs to be more cooked than we would have liked. The yolk was congealed rather than runny. Just a note to ask for them soft poached next time. And the menu, well I’m just excited to try more. So much of the menu sounds exciting, from the benedict with chorizo gravy to the 12hr smoked brisket sandwich, there’s so many tasty things I want to try! I love the variety of inspired dishes from around the world, it’s great that Chico has a spot like this. I can’t wait to visit again!

My favorite place for breakfast… The menu looks a little intimidating at first because the dishes are unique. I really like the West Coast Sunrise — brown rice & egg cakes with veggies, avocado and bacon. The lemon ricotta pancakes are soo good too. I plan on trying many more dishes in the future.

Tried out Roots Catering on a whim and it was one of the best decisions! All of the dishes are inspired by different countries, it was so hard to just choose one! The lunch menu is very reasonably priced between $ 8 – 15. Even my boyfriend who isn’t very adventurous with his food tried a french dish and was blown away with how good it tasted. I tried the side salad instead of fries and it exceeded my expectations, it was a delicious meal in itself! Needless to say we licked our plates clean and will definitely be back again! Our server was really nice and super on top of everything.
