On Saturday as I was walking down Water Street in Port Townsend, WA, I chanced upon a young lady playing her violin next to a mini-park. On a hunch, I said, «Are you one of Andy Mackie’s students?» Her response was a large smile, and the reply, «I studied with him and now I teach in the schools» It was a lovely day, the city was bathed in February sunshine and her violin music added to the joyful atmosphere of downtown. A bit of perfection, as it were. It was the legacy of one dreamer… Andy Mackie. And hence this review. Andy Mackie teaches kids to play musical instruments. Andy Mackie also teaches kids how to make musical instruments. And to pass them along to others so that they can make their own music. No parade in Port Townsend is complete without a contingent of Andy Mackies’ musicians. No school year is complete without young students learning how to make a musical instrument or two. And(of course) virtually no day in this«CIty of Dreams» is complete without hearing a bit of music wafting over the water as young musicians practice what they have been taught. I could continue to sing the Foundation’s praises. But I won’t as the the website will give you more information and pictures than I ever possibly could. But…take it from me. Mackie’s Foundation has made a major difference in the lives of a lot of kids. And the residents of the Olympic Peninsula. Its a simple thought… what if every community had an Andy Mackie? Just wondering…
