Hours are wrong — they close at noon. We made an unfortunate trip there in the evening.

I’ve known the Sipes for a long time. They are genuinely nice people who care about their business and their food is delicious! I highly recommend going to their business and supporting our home town businesses.

Another stop on the Bakery Crawl. Today we thought is was time to sample some doughnuts, and Glazy Square did not disappoint. The case was full, they even offer a drive thru… Holy crap the walk from my car to the building eases the guilt of eating the donut. The case was full: twisted glazed and cinnamon, cinnamon rolls, square glazed donuts, square donuts with chocolate icing, square donuts with white icing and cake donuts: Todays special was the lemon donut. The cake donuts was not what I was looking for today, but I will keep them in mind for the future. We got the traditional glazed(square) donuts. They were amazing, this is probably one of the best donuts I have ever eaten. The reason they got a 4 star was the lady at the counter was rushing me and I felt like I was annoying her…

During a trip to Illinois several months ago, I saw a billboard for a doughnut place called Glazy Squares. They advertised square glazed doughnuts, and I knew, right then and there, that I had to have one. They have a couple of locations: one in East Alton and one in Collinsville. According to their website, both open at 5:00. East Alton closes at noon, but Collinsville closes at 9 Sunday through Thursday and at 10:00 on Friday and Saturday. Another difference between the two locations is that the Collinsville store also offers ice cream. My husband and I happened to pass by the Collinsville Glazy Squares whilst cruising northward on Rte. 159 on our way to Bobby’s Frozen Custard. Being the health nut that I am, I jumped at the chance to finally get the square doughnut I’d seen advertised months ago. It was close to 5:00PM on a Sunday. We walked in, and there was a small display case of doughnuts. They had a few cake doughnuts, some long johns and twists, and perhaps a couple apple fritters. The friendly employee saw me checking out the cake doughnuts and explained that those were all they had left that day. That seemed odd because they were open until 9. I assumed they made doughnuts throughout the day, but perhaps they make a certain amount and then are open late more for the ice cream. Anyway, they had plenty of square glazed doughnuts. That’s what we were in the mood for, and we bought two to have later that day. They were good and were pretty much what you would expect from a glazed doughnut. We ended up eating ours as a midnight snack, and I have to imagine they would have been ever-so-slightly better if we had them shortly after they had been made. I don’t see myself driving over to Collinsville just for these doughnuts, but I’d probably stop by Glazy Squares more often if I lived in the area. The place isn’t very impressive from the outside, but their online menu lists about 19 different doughnuts that they offer. Too bad they didn’t have the devil’s food cake doughnut when I was there. I would have tried that one, too. I’m now able to brag that I’ve had both circular and square doughnuts. My desire for a doughnut in Illinois has been fulfilled. Well, it was until I read a few of these reviews that mentioned Kruta’s. Now I want to go there, too. ;)

Yum! Love all of their donuts — I’m not a big cake donut fan but theirs are really good. Squares with icing — can’t get enough. Coffee is great. Can’t wait to try the ice cream! Husband says biscuits and gravy are delicious. Always friendly! I got 50% off a dozen tonight w the discount card.

So I finally decided to see what all the fuss was about with Glazy Squares, so I arrived at what I thought was early, 7:15am on a Friday expecting to grab a quick donut and head off to work. I was wrong. I walked inside and noticed an almost empty display case, I would have thought that I showed up before closing time based on the limited selection. What type of a donut shop runs out before 8am! They did however have some of their namesake, which is what I was actually there for. I waited for nearly 5 – 10 minutes while I watched two employees behind the counter, one was taking orders from the drive thru and the other was making donuts, I think. I really couldn’t tell since he was behind a wall. I waited patiently and almost considered walking out, while I was waiting the line stared to grow to nearly 8 people waiting inside the store. The employee taking drive thru orders finally stopped and apologized for the wait, only after taking nearly 5 drive thru orders all of which arrived AFTER me. Meanwhile I kept patiently waiting in the store. I ordered a Glazy Square and a Chocolate Long John, and a soda to go. Prices were reasonable, I think my order was about $ 3.50, however I wasn’t overly impressed with the donuts. I actually prefer Kruta’s, and believe it or not Casey’s makes a good French Crueler but it is nice to have an option on the north side of town. Personally I wouldn’t go out of my way to stop here again, but if I could offer them one piece of advice that would be to ditch the drive thru, your customers should never have to wonder whose business is more important and because of this they almost lost a customer this morning.

Collinsville is home to my old stomping grounds, and while I still lived there I noticed this small shack of a donut bakery. I didn’t usually frequent local businesses there by that point(my husband and I had developed more«urban» tastes and often found ourselves traveling to eateries across The River). But there was something about the place that struck me and I don’t know what that something is, but one rainy day I found myself stopping in on a whim. And let me just say: Kruta’s may have cornered the market in terms of A LOT of bakery items in C-ville, but they no longer hold the crown for donuts. And that’s real talk. That«on a whim» visit to Glazy Squares turned out to be some serious divine intervention. I was sold on the cherry glazed cake donuts, which honestly HAVE to be my absolute favorite variety of cake donut in general. I don’t even know who makes those anymore, but who really cares? Glazy Squares makes them, so I don’t need to go anywhere else. Actually, their cake donuts across the board, and there is a wide variety! And you can get a dozen on the cheap. A mixed dozen will run you about $ 8.99, which is only $ 1-$ 2 more than what you’ll pay at certain chains. Would I cross The River back into Collinsville just for these donuts? Maybe not JUST for the donuts, but my folks still live there so that’s always a great excuse to grab a fresh dozen.
