Chef Sugar’s Cakes and Confections

Embarrassed! My son’s 18^th birthday party with at least 50 high schoolers– I explained that this cake was to be the center piece of our party. My son’s nickname is pickle so I asked for a creative cake with a cool pickle. My 11 year old could have made a better design. I also am confused as to why it was a sheet cake why the icing was fondant.. I thought fondant was used for sculpting– however there was no sculpting on this cake. Therefore — not only was it ugly but it didn’t taste good either. My problem here is that I am not a baker– I can only make suggestions and say what I would like. it’s not my place to make it look or taste good hence why I paid quite a bit to have someone else do it.
Worst part was the customer service, she did not even acknowledge that I felt jilted. Mentioned that «next time» maybe we would be on the same page. Ha. like there will be a next time.
My suggestion is that the owner/​chef stay in the back and let someone else run the business as she has no sense of business. Good luck– you will need it.

Purchased my baby shower cake here and yes it was expensive but I was expecting that. The cake was really good. The only thing I had a problem with was the pick up. I told them when I went in to order the cake the shower was on a Sunday and not once was it mentioned that we needed to pick up the cake on Saturday so when I called to ask when we pick up the cake, the lady had an attitude with me saying I should have been told when I ordered the cake but neither me nor my mom remember her saying that. On the Saturday before, pick up was between 10 and 4 and I told them my mom would pick it up because I had to work all day and at 3 pm that day I got about 5 consecutive calls in 15 minutes from them, while I was at work! My mom was planning to pick up the cake at 3:30. It was extremely annoying and very unprofessional in my opinion. I hate when my phone is blown up like that, it’s extremely unnecessary.

Went in for cake pops. the lady with the pic on the website helped me… she seemed tired and not very happy… but she tried. the priblem i had is that I didnt like the cake pips. they were not fresh and there was to much coating on the outside. Didnt care for the colors. and the pops seemed pretty old. She put them in a box. they were not wrapped or made to look pretty i told her they were for a birthday! I wasnt impressed. So i will not be goibg back ever. it was deoressing… on a good note. there was an older lady workung in the shop who seemed really nice. gave me directions to get to the highway

I should have read the reviews online before going to Chef Sugar’s. I heard how great she was from co workers and then saw her on the Food Network so I figured she was worth the hype. WRONG! I should have walked out and took my busniess elsewhere when she decided to laugh at me as I was trying to describe to her what I was trying to accomplish for my son’s birthday cake. Rude and unprofessional desecribes her! I went ahead and went with the ordering of the cake. Her smallest sheet cake was $ 123. I wanted to get my son something good so I went ahead and placed the order. This cake was sloppy to say the least. The «Happy Birthday» was not even centered and they SPELT HIS NAME WRONG! I didn’t notice this until 15 minutes before the party. So I called up and she just kept saying that what was on the contract. Well I know how to spell my kids name. Long story short she did end up giving me a partial refund on it due to we did not have to go in to have her fix it. But then we go to actually cut the cake, and it is literally crumbling as I cut it. I am having to spoon crumbled cake onto plates. Other reviews had mentioned about cake being crumbly and not freshly baked. A kids birthday may not be much to her but it does to me. A sloppy, crooked, misspelled, crumbly ass cake is something I would be embarrased to give to a paying customer. I should have gone to Little London where I know there work is phenominal.

I’m not sure what to say about this shop. I stopped in here with my daughter and we ordered cupcakes. I ordered their Boston cream and was saddened to feel it had been stored in a refrigerated display case. I don’t want a cold cupcake when I’m going to a bakery and paying $ 3.50 a cupcake! I was unsure whether the cupcake was baked the same day or a hold over from earlier in the week. The taste was so-​so and the fondant flower on top was too thick to be something I would eat.
As another reviewer mentioned, the displays were dusty, making the cakes look very unappetizing. Maybe they should be putting the display cakes in the refrigerated case and leaving the cupcakes out at room temperature.
The customer service wasn’t anything to get excited about. The girl at the counter took care of us, but spent our time in the shop chatting it up with her co-worker…which is really uncomfortable when you’re the only one in the store trying to enjoying a refrigerated cupcake and listening to a stranger’s relationship issues.
I’ll keep looking for my go to cupcake shop.

I ordered a cake here for my dad for his birthday. I didn’t know what to expect because I wanted a lot of detail on the cake. After the girl wrote everything down she priced it at 72.39! For a small cake. That was crazy. When I went to pick it up Saturday morning, it looked great. The only problem was there was more frosting than there was cake. I had to scrape off almost all the frosting. Other than that the cake was delicious.

So. Here’s the thing… This place was recommended to me by a co-​worker, so I stopped by on a lazy Saturday afternoon. They had a special going, so I bought more than I probably would have on any other day. I ordered macarons, cupcakes, and cake pops. I didn’t try anything until I got home later, so I’ll get to that.
The customer service at first was okay, the guy who greeted us and told us about the special was nice enough. After placing my order I began to ask more questions, the girl who worked there was VERY rude and abrupt. I immediately regretted making a purchase.
The décor is tacky and the tables, display cases, and counter tops were dirty. Everything looked at though it needed to be dusted. Gross.
Then I got home, I ate the Key Lime Macaron, cloyingly sweet. Like, lump in the back of my throat sweet. I made dinner and thought my husband and I could share some of the goodies I brought home. The ONLY thing we enjoyed was the Vanilla Bean macaron. Everything else was so sugary, it wasn’t edible. (I threw away a cupcake, a cake pop, and a macaron)
I was EXTREMELY disappointed. I had high hopes because of my co-​workers recommendation, but I would NEVER do business here, ever again.

These are my favorite cupcakes in the Springs. I was sure I had already written a review!!! My husband surprised me with a box of them one time right when we moved here and I fell in love with them. I couldn’t believe how gorgeous they were and really appreciate their unique and clever flavors. I’ve never had a stale cupcake from here either! My absolute favorite cupcake is their vanilla cupcake– it is magical. I’m a chocolate girl, through and through, but for some reason I’m in love with Chef Sugar’s vanilla cupcakes. I’ve actually tried to recreate them (to save money) and I will never get even close. They have a buy five cupcakes and get one free deal, which is nice. I always go thinking I’ll only get one or two cupcakes but always end up with a box of six (I have very little self control when it comes to cupcakes!) I think the place is cutely decorated and their boxes are cute too. The cupcakes are pretty pricey but I think they are worth it with their beauty, filings, taste and freshness. They also have cake pops which are also very cute.
I think they have classes here too– I inquire every time I go about their baking classes that I read about on their website because I love baking but my cupcakes don’t work here because of the altitude, but they say that there hasn’t been enough interest in the basic classes, but they are going to offer decorating classes which also sound fun.
Sometimes when I’m running errands I will park in between Hobby Lobby and King Soopers and stop for cupcakes when I’m done with both stores. These cupcakes always make me happy and would be a great gift for someone too!

Horrible. Over priced and poor quality. Employees are rude. The cake I ordered collapsed after sitting out just an hour. Asked for no filling, cut the cake and fondant was in the middle. Completely disappointed. Definitely would not recommend.

I have been here maybe 10 – 15 times over the last couple of years. If the cupcakes weren’t so good, this would be a 1 star. The cupcakes are fantastic & the buttercream frosting is to die for, BUT it comes cold. This is criminal. Who wants to eat a cold cupcake with cold, hard frosting? Plus if you’re getting a cupcake, it’s usually an impulse purchase, that you want to eat right away. Here, you have to take it home & wait for it to reach room temp for the frosting to taste right. However, if you have the patience to do that, it’s worth the wait! The flavors are unique, well thought out, inventive & beautifully decorated. The prices are a bit high, but well worth it!
When I questioned the owner abt this, she was rude (as usual), defensive & annoyed. She claimed that it is the Health Inspector that requires it. I’ve been to at least 6 other cupcake places in town, many more than once & Chef Sugar is the ONLY one that serves cold cupcakes. So, IDK why she insists on serving them cold, to the detriment of her product, but I don’t believe it has anything to do with the inspector.
The shop is cute & visually appealing, parking is convenient, but the service problems are a huge issue. I will say that over the last 6 months, service is improving. The last few times, the employees have greeted me & smiled & this last visit, the owner even smiled, which is an extreme rarity. But, for most of my trips here, the service was never friendly, the owner is rude & the employees act like they are doing you a favor by serving you. Hopefully the recent trend is just that & service is improving.
This place would easily be 5 stars if only they were polite & friendly and served the cupcakes at room temp, as everyone else in town serves them. Such a shame that the owner can’t see how much she’s holding her own business back with her attitude.

I really wouldn’t even give this place a one star. There products are way too over priced for what u get. I didn’t mind the free stuff from some of there employees there though. But I would never spend a dime in that place. The owner is the most unprofessional person I have ever met in my life. No wonder no one wants to work for them let alone buy from them.

Worst costumer service ever. My girlfriend Esther is turning 21 so she headed into Chef Sugar’s to place an order a week from that day, Heidi (the owner I assume) told her it was better to place the order online and send it to their email on the website, even though my girlfriend had all the info for the cake with her. She placed the order with all of the info about the cake through email. No response from Heidi. She sent the email a couple more times (6 in total) to make sure it was working, after calling them up Monday (They’re closed Sunday) they were very rude right off the bat and were upset, saying they didn’t receive an email. Even though we had the right email address and the emails were being sent. Esther was still very apologetic, Heidi was not understanding. So she called me up, and asked if I can email Chef sugar. So I sent all of the info about the cake to their email, no response. I called this morning and I was met with a very flat and rude tone from Heidi’s assistant. I told her the situation and she relayed that information to Heidi, who I can hear borderline ranting that she’s been «Checking her email every second of the day.» Her tone was very condescending and unprofessional. I politely said «Maybe you’re email is down?» that clearly pissed her off, I can hear Heidi rudely mouthing off in the background, keep in mind I have yet to be put on the phone with Heidi. Her assistant ends up repeating Heidi, telling me «Regardless, come into the shop, tell her the info and bring a picture.». My aunt runs a restaurant, my uncle does, and my dad did. They never talked to costumers like this. This immature behavior is not okay for a business. Now we have to look for a new bakery that is decent and will except an order on short notice, which does not exist. Thanks Heidi, you screwed us. Fix your email and maybe consider a different career.

I freaking love the baked goods here. They are usually a little expensive, but I always forget the price when I bite into one of their cupcakes. The owner can be a little unpleasant, but she can be as terrible as she wants as long as the goodies always taste this good!

I heard awesome things about this place. All I have to say is that I paid $ 43 for a dozen of smashed cupcakes with the wrong filling. Total disappointment!

A girlfriend of mine ordered some of Chef Sugar’s cupcakes for a playdate — they were DELISH! We split half a dozen and I must say they were perfect. If you have to choose one, I would say the red velvet! So great for a treat!

I stumbled across this place and will never do business with them. Very unprofessional staff. I tried asking for designs, pricing sheets etc for a birthday cake for my son. The girl acted put out by my potential business and kept saying just look at the Facebook. The level of inconvenience I apparently put her through establishes how I will never use them. Also being insulated about «if I could pay for it, I could have it» didn’t win me over either.

Just updating my review on this bakery because I ordered a cake from them this weekend and it was my first experience with anything other than their cupcakes. I am still giving four stars because I believe, like most of the others who have reviewed, that the service could be a little friendlier. However, the cake completely makes up for it.
I ordered a birthday cake on Monday for a Saturday party. They need 5 – 7 days for specialty cakes. I ordered a ¼ chocolate sheet cake with chocolate buttercream. Some of the other reviews had made me concerned that the cake might not be fresh. Those reservations were completely unfounded. The cake was amazing. Not only was it beautiful, but it also tasted perfect.
I’m sad that others don’t share my excitement for this bakery. I will continue to order specialty cakes from them.

I wanted to love this place. Every time I see a cupcake place I get excited (though I’m guessing there business is more about the actual cakes). And once again i was disappointed.
The cupcake itself was tasty enough. Nothing to write home about though. They are small (well normal size, most cupcakes places are HUGE) but I actually prefer that. The frosting was where I was so very sad. I’m guessing they had pulled these cupcakes out of the fridge because it was really cold an when I bit into it broke in two. It was just a solid sugar mass, instead of squishy and delightful. Boooo. It also tasted really artificial. To be fair, I had exercised self control and only got one, so maybe the others are better but I won’t be back to find out.
As an aside, I HATE when cupcakes are in the foil cupcake holders instead of paper because it hurts my teeth when I take a bite as I drive away (since I have no patience to wait), though this did not affect my review. Also, the girl at the counter acted a bit like I was annoying her by coming in. This isn’t Portland. Poor customer service isn’t trendy here.

Ambiance: Rather small storefront, almost hidden in the King Sooper’s strip mall complex at Woodmen and Academy. Order at counter, pay, and move on.
Service: We had fun joking with the crew working there. Real people that are really friendly.
Food: High quality cupcakes with high quality ingredients. I would like to see more of a variety. They also make specialty cakes to order, and offer cake decorating classes on the side.
Overall, what is it with the explosion of cupcake places in cities across America? I wonder how long this fad will last before it gets old (think of all the gourmet cookie shops that have closed since the 1980s). I am a fan of this tiny place though, and will be back for sure.

Ok I’m giving this place 3 stars… I want to leave room for improvement… And because while I thought the cupcakes were good here (much better than Couture Cupcakes… people take note!!) I’m not sure we can sign them up for Cupcake War’s just yet. (I do think there is great potential)
I’ve been wanting to try these guys for a while and after the debacle of needing another new tire… and having to go to Sam’s for a new tire; I was in need of a pick me up… enter in Mr. Surgary-​deliciousness-​lemon-​cupcake pick-​me-​up. It was a lemon cupcake, lemon frosting, and lemon filling… yes that’s a whole lotta lemon but trust when I say it was not too much. I was worried the most about the frosting, I love sugar as much as the next person but I didn’t want to end up in a sugar coma (like at Couture Cupcakes)… I’m happy to say it was a perfect balance of sweet and tart. The cupcake was nice and moist and the lemon filling added to the overall lemoniness of it all.
I was also able to try the Chocolate peanut butter cupcake. Now while the lemon cupcake was awesome, this one leaves a little to be desired. I don’t think you can call it a chocolate peanut butter cupcake if it’s really a chocolate cupcake with chocolate frosting… topped with a Reese’s cup. Add some peanut butter in the middle and I would have been much happier. This one was much sweeter so be warned.
I got a friend the Red Velvet (he’d never had red velvet with cream cheese frosting)… yes I did find him under a rock… He thought the cupcake was VERY good and wanted the address so he could get more.
I want to make a note of the inside. Small but cute with 3 – 4 pub style tables. Here it actually looks like a bakery… the oven and mixing area can be seen right when you walk-​in. Just a nice comfy feeling.
I wish I could give them 3.5 stars but you can’t… so 3 stars it is… but 3 stars in a «Very good and can’t wait to see what you have next» meaning. Give these guys a try everyone!
