I was SOLD when reading about the ‘new release’, Shina Soba at Kujiraken: ~the much-loved«Shina Soba» of «Kujiraken» in Kanagawa. Their motto, «Love for the noodles, and soul for the soup.» The sophisticated yet pronounced flavor of their soup is somehow nostalgic. Please try this heartwarming savor. According to the ads in Mitsuwa, Kujiraken was from Kanagawa, but thanks to whoever post their org. store link, they have a main store at Yokohoma, Japan, and the price for the noodle was exactly same in both Japan &US.(guess that means we actually getting more than what we’re paying for with the $ exchange rate these days :^P) anyway, so I have to say, I usually don’t stop by Kujiraken because there’s Italian Maestro(my favorite ^^) and Santoka both in the same food court, but I was glad to try their new Shina Soba. I think Shina really means ‘China’ in old Japanese, and probably would mean Chinese noodle. It was really great, to me, the egg noodle itself is like the ones you get at most Chinese/HKese restaurant but at such a cheaper price. guess I’ll be going back to Mitsuwa food court and just alternate between Italian Maestro, Santoka, and Kujiraken now ^^.

Seeing an ad inside Mitsuwa circular that Kujiraken Ramen is coming(On 5÷15÷08 for a 4 Day demonstration sale event), I found myself ordering a bowl on the opening day. How a day off I requested months ago coincided with the opening day is beyond me, there is god. But how the planned 4 Day weekend turned to work on Sunday is disconcerting, another coincidence, and there is no god. Oh well! Life a balance I tell myself and chew on some noodles. Nuff about me. Kujiraken? I was eager to try the Kujiraken Ramen because I’ve seen their ramen and the restaurant in Japanese videos(top 100 Ramen in Japan, etc) and they ranked among the top 100 a couple of times(out of like 10,000 ramen places in Japan). Soup: There is this nice, deep and flavorful taste hidden in this soup, I smelled a hint of nice dried fish stock, very mellow and pleasant aroma. The soup was light style and it was like a regular soy sauce based soup with a nice well thought out base stock(Apparently what they’re famous for in Japan). But during my visit the soy sauce flavor overpowered it. The after taste was not all that I thought it’ll be and there was a bit of harshness(for lack of better word). They’re preparing it away from their home environment and short preparation period to boot so the first day might have been their off day(To put it nicely). Noodles: The noodles looked good but were a bit soggy, but the flavor was nice. Pork: The Chashu pork slices had lot of fatty sections but whatever meat I can separate out was good, not outstanding good but just good. Misc: The seaweed sheet has come apart and disintegrated and was stuck on the side of the Styrofoam bowl looking like it has been there for ever, all wet(Bits of mush in the form of seaweed sheet). I see, the bowl sat for a while before I got it, but like I said they in a foreign environment trying to duplicate homeland taste, a tough job no matter the food type.
