Went twice for a haircut and once for color. Both times I had a haircut it was just ok. I have long straight hair and all I wanted was some layers put in. I had different girls each time. Both times they didn’t do the best job and charged the master student price even though it was not a master student. All I wanted was layers, I could have had a friend cut it at the same quality level and not charge me. My color experience was not good at all. I had completely«virgin» hair and asked for some balayage hilights. I brought a picture(same length hair as mine, similar tone, not a whole lot lighter than my natural color) and said«I want EXACTLY this.» All I needed was dye, nothing fancy, because it was completely natural hair. I was handed to one student and sat alone in the chair for 10 min. Then I was handed to another student who left me alone in the chair over 20 min!!! When she returned she had another student with her. The two of them spent three hours yanking my hair until I had a headache and poking me in the eye with sheets of foil. She even got some dye on my face! The two of them worked separately so one side of my head was done by one and the other side was done by the other — which led to inconsistencies. They then left me alone for another 30 min. When they came back they handed me off to yet another student — one who had never dealt with a client. She washed and styled my hair and did a great job other than drilling water down my back(but she was inexperienced so it wasn’t her fault). She was even taught me how to style it! BUT when all was said and done my hair looked EXACTLY how it did when I came in. The manager kept assuring me that in the sun it will look lighter. No. It doesn’t. I can’t tell a difference and neither can my family or friends! There are pieces they left natural from root to end and you can’t tell them apart for the«dyed» hair. When I said it wasn’t for exactly what I hoped for the manager said all she could do was reschedule with one of the same students! If they didn’t get it right the first time when all they needed was dye I’m not going to trust them now that it needs bleach! When I called back later to say I didn’t want the appointment, I wanted a refund, I was sent to a main office who said I didn’t have an appointment scheduled and there was nothing they could do. Long story short — they damaged my hair and I left looking exactly how I came in, except now I have to damage my hair MORE to get the look I wanted.

I returned to AIC for roots-only color. Since I haven’t been to this location in 3 years, I was no longer in the system. So, I gave the senior student my written instructions, which included my unique Aveda formula, and together we went over all of it verbally. I even drew a diagram representing my hair shaft. Next, she asked her instructor about the formula because it’s not a typical one and the instructor said it was OK to use it since I’ve been using it for over 6 years. The student applied the formula to my new growth. She did so fairly quickly and I was worried it may overlap. The student did a great job of conditioning my extra long hair, removing knots, and then braiding it in a fish tail. The only disappointments are my formula was not entered into the system after my appointment and the student missed a few spots. So, I don’t think she fully saturated/coated my new growth. I know this because, 2 days after my appointment, I had an up-do for a wedding at a different salon and that hair dresser saw the spots. I think the student went too fast during the application. On the positive, at least she didn’t turn my crown white and then«fix» it by turning all my hair yellow as the COSMETOLOGYTEAMLEAD(Angie Perino Nelson) did at Aveda Institute Phoenix several months ago.

The Aveda Institute is a cosmetology school in Covington where aspiring artists go to perfect their craft as a hair stylist or spa professional specializing in esthiology or manicuring. What that means for you is spa services at a 30−40% discount if you are willing to have services done by a student. I was a little skeptical of having a student work on me at first, but after being here several times, I’m here to let you know this school is totally legit and I have never had a bad experience. I’ve had massages, manicures, pedicures, facials and haircuts here. The student performing the service is always closely monitored by an instructor(especially in the case of the hair services) in case intervention is needed. Sometimes after a particular service the instructor will come in and ask about your experience in order to grade the student. That’s a minor annoyance for such a huge discount, in my opinion. The other thing I love about Aveda is the way all of their products smell. They use plant derived ingredients and they just smell so earthy and naturally good. I highly recommend Aveda Institute if you love spa services and love saving money.
