One of the first bars I discovered when I moved to Dallas 6 years ago. Staff is always friendly, they remember your name and your drink. Good prices, surprisingly really great food and it has some history and character to it.

Bar was a typical local dive. The meth head next to us at the bar was def a turn off. glad he left shortly after I arrived. My co workers pointed him out. Our bar tab was $ 98 and some change. I paid via credit card and gave the bar tender a $ 20 dollar tip for a total of $ 118. Yet when the bill posted to my account the total was $ 160 and some change. So wrong! Really the $ 20 tip wasn’t enough so she decided to add $ 42 to her tip? For a total tip of $ 62 on a $ 98 bill??? Come on. The charge is currently being disputed by my bank. Do not visit this bar unless you are prepared to be ripped off via credit card fraud.

Loud music, loud people. Simple place to drink and eat bar food. Clearly a local hangout.

Was there for a concert. The place is small and was a little too warm, but I enjoyed the concert.

Made me so happy finding this place. FYI it’s a total towny bar. The locals were so nice kept coming up asking where I was from and hanging out. Very friendly. If u r traveling and want that hometown feel while having a beer this place is two thumbs up.

Was walking to have drinks at The Mitchell, stopped, looked next door and seen City Tavern and decided it looked more our style. Friendly bar staff, great atmosphere and delicious local beer.

Wonderful place. Drink prices were fair. Draft selection is good. Enjoyed some great live jazz music. Bartender was friendly enough. We had a enjoyable time. Oh, and the menu looked fun, but we never ended up ordering food. Next time!

Pretty basic bar. Good bar food for when you get hungry after a night of fun with friends. I recommend the grilled cheese. There are local brews on tap and also cheap domestics for those with less refined taste buds, like myself. There is also trivia which goes well with greesy food and drinks. Bar staff was pretty attentive which seems to be a rarity these days.

Love me some Tavern! This is a local hangout spot for myself and several friends. It’s rare that I walk in and don’t see someone that I know. The best way to describe City Tavern: it’s the«Cheers of Dallas». Extensive bar selection with several great beers on tap. Great bar food(foodies look elsewhere) Yes, the bathrooms are usually a mess and the bar is dark and a bit dingy, but we wouldn’t have it any other way!

Stopped in for a very late lunch. Standard bar fare, friendly enough service. The mac and cheese doesn’t seem too exciting, but keep going, it is delish. Plus, the cheese on top of my salad was melted. Only in Texas? I’m not complaining. Long awkward pauses between songs but maybe that was a one time thing.

Not too much to say other than what already has been said. I found this place to be the run of the mill neighborhood bar. The staff were friendly and the drinks were strong. The bathrooms were a total mess though. If you want a bar you can come to and have a few drinks without wanting anything special this would be a good go to.

This was a bar we visited after the Woolworth on our trip to Dallas. Completely different, but still fantastic in its own way. It has kind of a saloon feel. There was live music being played when I showed up and it was very good. There were tons of open seats at the bar at 11 on a Friday night. As soon as we sat down, they were telling us all about the local beers and hiking with us. We hung around for about an hour. Got some chips and queso, which was little more than Tostitos and Velveeta. Wasn’t a huge fan. But the barkeep was amazing. My water was never dry, even though I’d chugged maybe 5 glasses. A huge party of maybe 20 guys walks in and all orders fireball and beer; he had them taken care of almost instantly. It was amazing to watch this guy work. Anyway, was a great little pub. Wasn’t really impressed with the food, but the drinks, staff and the atmosphere definitely make me want to go back.

Torn between 2&3 stars for one reason… I live across the street. The convenience of this bar is insane. Literally 10 steps away. There is always at least 10 people there, most sit outside, but always a nice little crowd. HOWEVER… 1.The music is awful. There’s a juke box, granted, but if no one is paying $ 1 a song the«random music plays» but it’s always this extremely intense wanna be hard rock music and some may like that but… No. 2. Bartenders really aren’t that friendly. I’ve had one gentleman that was extremely friendly and good at his job. & there’s a girl, Ilena**(spell check) she’s awesome but the rest aren’t all that. 3. Yes, like other reviews say they have good beers but… They don’t have a cocktail menu and, the bartenders give you no suggestions. Which slightly disappoints. It’s not an awful bar, but it’s not jaw dropping. My roommates and I have it on the bottom of the list of where to go but, it’s still on the list.

Today was our first experience here. One of the specials was a taco salad. It was large for a lunch special, fresh, and delicious. We also had the fish and chips. This dish was standard frozen fare, but it was clearly made when we ordered it and delivered hot to the table. The side of Mac and cheese was made from scratch with an excellent texture. It was a little low on cheese, but the bechamel was well done. The décor is cool, the music is top 40, and the waitresses were friendly and efficient. Overall, City Tavern is a good pub close to our place that we will visit again. Imagine a well run Chili’s or Applebee’s(minus the kids) with more interesting décor, a better bar, and louder music.

Cool bar with classic details. There is so much to look at in this place… in our booth, there was a photo of the city all star baseball team from the 20’s! The Johnny Cash mosaic, I could go on… We came here for a late lunch. Get the fried pickles. Don’t question this, just do it. The vinegar of the pickles combined with the crispy goodness was awesome. Instead of using pickle chips, they use the long slices, which makes bigger fried pickles(YES!) Chris got the grilled chicken sandwich, which he really liked. I got the turkey sandwich, which had barely any meat and it seemed pretty processed. I did like the arugula, swiss cheese and spicy balsamic. I wish I had known it wasn’t fresh turkey breast and I would have ordered something else. Service was good and I left full and satisfied(mostly from the pickle chips) :)

This bar reminds me of some of the narrow old wooden ones you will find on 6th street in Austin. Seemed a lot of people know us, and in fact one of the servers was sure we were not from around here. Came by and frantically asked«Did you park out front?!» Apparently you’re not supposed to but someone did. We assured her that we left our car at the Omni and she went on to try to find who parked there. Just as I noticed the portrait of Johnny Cash flipping a bird, a live version of Ring of Fire came on. Cool. Looking around it became apparent that a lot of the patrons knew each other and the staff knew them. They had(8) local beers on draft. The one we tried a few pints of was Four Corners Local Buzz. Local Dallas Honey provided the sugar for the yeast to eat to produce the 7.2% alcohol to produce the buzz. Served at a good temperature. Nice dark place to find local brew with some sports on the moderate panels.

My go to spot for daytime drinking. It def has a neighborhood vibe to it. Tons of locals and the beer is cheap and cold. Service was as good as it gets from a watering hole. It’s not one of my cool digs but every now and then you will find me parked at the bar fist pumping. YOLO

This part of Main Street is the infant little strip of nightlife for downtown. Plush is the cheesey disco, union park is the«nicer» bar with selfish tarty mid-drif showing blonde barmaids, Woolworth is the pseudo gastro pub and City Tavern is solidly the dingy neighborhood bar where all types come to chill. The menu is cheap, decent, fatty and filling with meals like pulled pork sandwiches in the $ 10 range. The bartenders are sweet in a way, but could care less. You’re sort of left to fend for yourself, no wait or cocktail staff and upstairs is a hidden atmospheric live music venue. It’s almost trashy and everyone is welcome — Fratty preps, smart preps, almost homeless, sometimes hot girls, and anyone not donning a label. It’s my neighborhood bar. It’s always there for me, and it’s a block from my loft. Dallas was never so not Dallas — unplanned, unkept, no frills, unpretentious, and yet a little rude. Drink specials daily Kitchen til midnight A sort of anti Dallas dive bar Disney land. Don’t expect much.
