Very nice atmosphere… quite and quaint! Wine and pizza was great which had a different flare to it from your regular chain restaurant pizzas! Thoroughly enjoyed myself!

The place is great and super comfortable, there is a big wine list has a bar with tv and the pizza is amazing. Great service too!

We received excellent service from our waiter, despite other reviews. The other staff did drag him down however. Took us a while to get my mom’s simple dish of egg whites and avocado to her. Not sure what happened in the kitchen there.
I tried 3 things here and all of them were horrible:
The zucchini chips were soggy and really did not taste anything of a vegetable.
The bruschetta was tasted like tomato sauce on a wet croûton.
My frittata was the worst. It reminded me of low grade pizza. I’m not sure why they decided to use sausage that tastes of a pizza buffet for a breakfast dish.
Terrible…

I met a friend here for dinner during my most recent trip to Dallas for business. We both enjoyed the salmon with spaghetti squash and a nice glass of wine. We shared a slice of red velvet cake and it was sinfully good too! Great atmosphere and it was a nice touch to hear the live music outside as well. The service was great too.

The Bruschetta is so abysmal it should come with a warning… stale bread, stewed tomatoes, and goat cheese … tasted like soggy vomit!
I asked the server what she thought of it, and the best she could muster was a back handed complement. When I pointed that out, her face revealed agreement and she could not bring herself to say anything good about it.
Then came the bill with $ 12 for a highball.

Considering that Coal Vines had a 3.5 star average Unilocal review, I wasn’t expecting miracles.
No one paid us any mind when we walked in at 8pm on a Thursday evening and I had to run over to a busboy to ask whether to seat myself or if anyone might be dropping by the front of the restaurant to seat us this century. We were told to seat ourselves which we did.
Our waitress was very nice and made a few recommendations including the chicken parmigiana, which we ordered along with a pepperoni pizza.
Yes, I’m a pizza snob from New York but I can find good pizza anywhere and this was most certainly not good pizza. It tasted almost exactly like a Freschetta ‘gourmet’ pizza you’d find in the grocery store. Only the decent crust saved it from being a total disaster. The chicken parm was far more of a letdown. The tiny chicken breast they served was already cut in two and it looked like they were toddler-​sized portions. The fettuccine Alfredo was far larger but I’m not paying $ 15.99 for a half box of $.79 pasta.
If you’re going to offer up a child-​size piece of chicken, you might want to reconsider your pricing. On the brighter side, our pleasant waitress offered complimentary refills on the soft drinks.
I usually pass on dessert when I’m disappointed in the meal, but I made an exception and ordered both the chocolate bundt cake with vanilla ice cream and the red velvet cake. They went over well, particularly the chocolate cake, though I’d have preferred more of a lava cake instead.
It’s probably more like 2.5 stars than a straight two star, but either way, not a 3.5 star dining experience unless you’re here for the vino.

We weren’t expecting much when we walk in. We really just wanted a normal pepperoni pizza before our Logie’s starts. We ordered large pepperoni and my bf and I thought that this place was a great choice. Price is fair and flavor is great. We bought agreed that it was really, really good. We will be back to try other dishes or might just well be back for the pizza alone. :-)

My husband and I went here before our movie at the Look Theater. They have very good service and the food was excellent. We sat on the porch and they have a fan that keeps the air moving so it didn’t seem as hot. We got the spinach salad and it was very good! Then we split a small pizza. They let you do half and half so we each got what we wanted. Next time I would be a little more adventuresome and try something more than just the pepperoni pizza. Although good. It wasn’t over the top. But I ordered something plain. So that’s probably why.
The little things matter to me clean plates and fine glassware are what take this place up a notch.

Wow oh wow has the quality of Coal Vines taken a nose dive from five years ago. I suspect this is due to the move from a small and cramped restaurant in downtown Dallas to becoming a small chain, spreading out into the abyss known as Dallas suburbia.
I remember my husband and I going to Coal Vines off Cedar Springs Road five, six, maybe even seven years ago. It was a treat for us since the space was so small (tables had to be moved in order to get in and out of the chairs alongside the walls) and the host was a total jerk but we mustered through all of that because we loved the pizza. Saucy, plenty of fresh mozzarella, just downright tasty.
Coal Vines now has expanded their menu to include items like ribs. This is just wrong. Along with this, their pizza has gone down the shitter. Shredded cheese (and too much of it at that), a lack of sauce and lacking flavor. The pizza is now mediocre at best — or has it always been mediocre and I’m just not remembering correctly? I think it’s the former because my husband and I never would have dealt with the BS of parking and getting a table at the downtown Dallas location for this standard of food. I’m embarrassed to have recommended this restaurant to a friend who was visiting Dallas (her trip was cancelled thank goodness!).
Coal Vines, you’ve lost your way. And with the fierce Dallas restaurant scene, I’m afraid you are not going to survive.

Well, we decided to give this place a try again. Our waiter was fantastic. I made sure we were sat in a section other than the one from the waiter we had the last time. (I saw him when I walked in).
To start our table ordered the calamari and meatballs. Because I have a food allergy I couldn’t eat them. So I chose to order a white sangria and drink my calories. The white sangria was great. It was a little heavier in pineapple juice than I would have cared for but overall still great.
For dinner I ordered a cup of the French onion soup and the salmon with spaghetti squash. The French onion soup was good. I really didn’t like the bowl it was put it. The shape of it made it difficult to eat without having to actually pick up the bowl and tilt it. The salmon was great. Cooked perfectly and had a great flavor. The spaghetti squash wasn’t great. They left the seeds in it and didn’t separate the squash well so there were giant hard chunks. It also was too heavy in olive oil. I do like olive oil but not to the point where it takes over the flavor of the food. Especially with something as light as spaghetti squash.
When the weather is nice, this is a great place to go and hangout. They have a covered patio area that’s stays decently cool. I have yet to find anything I really love here food wise but their sangrias are great and worth coming in for.

Will preface this with the fact that we didn’t actually try their food. We would have loved to… but didn’t happen. A little after 2pm, we wanted to stop in for a late lunch. First problem is that parking is awful. It’s like they dropped the restaurant in the middle of a busy movie theater parking lot (it shares real estate with Look theaters). They should have valet or reserved parking for the restaurant… unfortunately, we had to park 200 yards away and walk. Not ideal, but not enough to deter us.
Got to the restaurant and were met by a host. He promptly informed us that the oven was being cleaned until 4pm and they weren’t serving pizza. I’m surprised that a place who does the bulk of their business in one type of item feels that it makes sense to remove said item from their menu for two hours for «maintenance». Needless to say, the reason we chose a pizza place for lunch was for the expressed purpose of consuming pizza… so we left, probably never to return.

This Coal Vines looks to be the biggest of the three locations that are currently in the metroplex. I came here for lunch recently and shared the Meatball Appetizer with another person. The meatballs were big, tender, and flavorful. The marinara sauce was so good that I wanted to dip my bread in the bowl to scrape up the goodness.
I ordered the Spinach Salad with walnuts and pears. The salad was very delicious.
I probably won’t get to this location very often, but I was glad to try it out. It seems really convenient to people that want to have a bite before or after the movie theater that’s next door.

Tony Soprano would approve. Having grown up in New Jersey through college, pizza and Italian food in general is held in high regard and residents are very picky. This pizza is as close to New Jersey pizza as we have ever found in our over 30 years in Texas. Growing up in New Jersey, we would go to an Italian Bakery for pizza to take home. The staff all spoke Italian to each other and some English to customers. Bring up pizza to anyone from the New York area and you will probably hear more about it than you ever wanted to know.
The only oddity about Coal Vines is their soup menu. Tortilla soup, onion soup and tomato soup. No minestrone or Italian wedding soup.
On a Saturday night, it was easy to get a table. It is hard to understand why this place is not slammed with business.
If you love really good pizza, give it a try.

Wife and I came by here at around 10 p.m. on a Saturday for a quick appetizer after catching a movie at the nearby LOOK theater.
They have an extensive wine menu and are known for their Pizza. This was the first time I had come by this location.
Being late at night, there were only a few customers and the waiter who attended to us was friendly and attentive.
We ordered the Seafood Risotto Cake which contains scallops, shrimp and crab risotto cake, and a spicy Diablo sauce. It was a great tasting appetizer. However, I took off 1 star off the review since some of the lettuce on this appetizer looked like they had gone bad. If you order this appetizer, double check the lettuce.
Otherwise, this is a great location for a date or a night out with friends, workmates, or family.

Came in to kill some time before our movie started over at Look Cinemas. They do brunch Saturday-​Sunday from open til 3pm. Sat down at the bar, and given there was hardly anyone in the establishment, it took awhile to get waited on. Draft of mimosa for only $ 8. My mom and I were definitely feeling that. Especially since just a glass of the mimosa itself would have been $ 8 alone. We got 4 large glass fulls of that single draft. (Woo!) So Naturally, we ordered another. The second one we did «half&half» (Half cranberry juice half oj. And they were extremely courteous with the champagne!) We also ordered the White Special. I enjoyed it. Loved the garlic taste and the ricotta (Mm). However, it could have been a bit warmer. I felt it lacked that «fresh out the oven» feeling if you know what I mean. I would definitely come back for some wine/​mimosa special and maybe to try their calzones/​stuffed fresh toast– which looked awesome from afar! They just need to step up their service. Again, there was about 15 people in the entire restaurant and about 4 people– that I could see, working. It shouldn’t take that long to be acknowledged and to get the check at the end of a meal.

Delicious breakfast calzone, perfect carafe of mimosas, and Mesclun green salad made for a great brunch without having to drive down to Uptown.
Our waitress, Doby, was very friendly, attentive and colorful. The place has a nice laid back attitude with soothing background music. I think we’ve found a new Sunday brunch spot.

I really like coming here. The pizza is always great and really fairly priced. Atmosphere is lots of fun too, especially if you like wine.
Great place for a dinner and movie or movie and dinner, as it is right in front of the look theater.

I just had a look at the other reviews and our experience was very different. Service was very good and so was the pizza. The flavors are more subtle, so don’t expect your normal american pizza. We had the Margherita, which is how we normally judge how good the place is. Crust was good and sauce was very good.
We also liked the ambiance which was open, quiet and not overly lit, which was a good thing.

Coal Vines came along on the heels of my beloved Fireside pies as the second in the Peak Pizza craze, so now it’s an old veteran on the scene. The pizzas are really quite good. They do a chewy thin crust, partially charred in their big ovens and the texture and flavor are unique.
I usually get the sausage and bell pepper pizza. A «small» will feed two amply. I have ordered a large and gorged — a great way to pig out.
The wine selection is terrific, and I would say it puts Coal Vines up near the top of the list of wine bars in Dallas. Cheaper but as good as Max’s Wine Dive.
