I only had a short time for lunch today, so I headed out on foot searching for«Colter’s Texas Bar-B-Q,» which was supposedly just a few short blocks from my work. When I arrived, I found«Colt’s Texas Bar-B-Q» instead of the«Colter’s» I was looking for. By the look of the mangled signage inside and out, I think they had recently undergone a rebranding for some reason. New management perhaps? I settled on a Link Sausage Platter, which came with two sides. I picked potato salad and peach cobbler. It was nice that I could pick dessert for one of my sides. The potato salad had plenty of mustard and a good crunch from the veggies, although it didn’t really have much flavor beyond the mustard and onions. The sausage came pre-sliced and covered in a massive helping of barbecue sauce. There was a good snap to the casings, enough that the plastic fork had a hard time pushing through. My first bite was definitely a little spicy, and the spice kept creeping up on me too. The sauce was a little thick for my liking and didn’t add much in terms of overall taste, and to be honest, it reminded me of the bbq dipping sauce that came with my McNuggets last week. I finished off my lunch with the peach cobbler, which seemed more like a deconstructed pie with all the pie crust mixed in. There was definitely more sugar than peaches here. I feel like they missed the mark a little on the dessert, which in my opinion suffers from an obvious identity crisis — it’s supposed to be peach cobbler, not diabetes pie. If I go back, I’ll be picking different sides and asking for my barbecue sans the sauce.

Had a few moments for lunch and this location is at the bottom of the building I was currently touring and was recommended by the local staff so I thought I would give it a try. That being said, I didn’t check the ratings of the place and maybe I should have, but hey, the low rating combined with my check in equated to a new badge!(Maverick Badge) Cheap interior with the typical antiquated metal signs and a steer head hanging on the wall is what you will find here. Plastic silver ware and a serve yourself style approach is also included in your experience here. I’m not a fan of that but that’s ok. The food was fine, nothing great, I’ve had a much better BBQ plate in Charlotte but something tells me that this place was catering to a different bread of downtown Dallas diner rather than some more original joints that could probably be found if I had time and patience. Preface, in no way am I trying to be racist but being served BBQ by an Asian guy in the middle of Dallas made me giggle. I don’t know why other than it just struck me as funny in a non stereotypical way. :)

This can’t really be the colters I know and love can it? Somethings wrong here. Where is the country atmosphere? Although I’m not a big fan of country, the presence of country music and décor simply add to the experience. The food lacks heart and soul. Whether it be sausage, brisket, or a burger, most colters I’ve been to have exceeded expectations. Here it feels like the fast food version of colters. Guess I’ll have to find an alternative for my BBQ.

Colter’s has the dubious distinction of having ruined more lunches for me than any other restaurant. I promised to never eat there again about six months ago when I was served a stuffed baked potato that I took one bite of and promptly threw away as it tasted like it was about a week old and was totally soaked to the core with some kind of grease. Alas, I was short on time today and Chef Wang’s had a line out the door… soo Colter’s it is… The fare: A chopped brisket sandwich. At least that is what I ordered. What did I get? A disgusting soggy/stale bun that was filled with greasy, tough gristle and a bbq sauce that could eat the paint off of a car. I don’t think I have ever given a place a one star rating… Congratulations Colters… you win. I hate mean spirited reviews but this place finally beat me down…

I work very close to this place however it had been about 5 years since I had eaten there. Went there for lunch today and now I remember why it had been so long. The sausage link that I ordered was not bad however they some how managed to mess up my baked potato. It was so dried out and over cooked that it was inedible. The onions that were sitting out on the fixins bar seemed like they had been there a week. To top it off the meal gave me gas which is always fun to share with your co-workers after lunch. Yes I came in here with low expectations and really out of convenience and time constraints more than anything else. Obviously there are so many better BBQ options in downtown that you shouldn’t even bother… that is unless you don’t like your co-workers.
