I agree with almost every review about Sols. Well except for the good ones. We have tried eating here numerous times and each time, it was just Yuck. That’s the best way I can explain it. Yuck. I know this location has been open for awhile and I really don’t understand HOW? Maybe if you are a fan of El Fenix type of mexican food this would be good, but I am most certainly NOT. I like my food to have flavor and LOTS of it. Oh and yes, this place is expensive for the yuckness. So if you want to overpay for some bland food, I’d recommend it to you. But I’m guessing you probably don’t.

So when my friend Christy recommended Sol’s Nieto, I came straight to Unilocal & was shocked by all of the bad reviews. Red Flag, for sure, but I trust Christy, so I went for it. All of you reviewers complaining about the food, I recommend you try the VEGAN options, because they ROCK. First of all, chips & salsa were yum – the salsa was just the right amount of spicy. Sol’s beans are made sans lard(VEGANFRIENDLY) and they have both SOYRIZO and DAIYA on the menu(WIN!). I had a burrito loaded with veggies, refried beans, soyrizo, and daiya, and smothered in verde sauce. Seriously. So. Much Yum. And the service. Again, I don’t know what other people have experienced, but our waitress was super nice and attentive. And the weather was GORGEOUS – we ate outside! I guess haters are always gonna hate, but I totally loved Sol’s, and would go there again for it’s Vegan Friendly Yumminess.

Went here a week ago for the first and last time. I had steak fajitas that were marinated to the point that it didn’t taste like steak. It left me wondering if they were trying to mask bad meat. The overpriced fajita plate had one teaspoon each of sour cream, guacamole & pico. Enough for 1 fajita. I asked for more sour cream & pico. When I got my bill I was floored to see a charge for $ 1.25 for sour cream and $ 1.50.yes $ 1.50 for cut up onions and cilantro. Something Taco Cabana gives away for free by the vat fulls. I asked the waitress if she was really going to charge me for that and she had the manager take it off. I was on the toilet at 3:00am.never again. There’s plenty of parking for a reason.

I went to this place when I heard they offered vegan cheese and some vegan meats. Also, they don’t use lard in their beans and no animal stock in their rice. As a vegan, these things are important. While I don’t go here all the time, I visit when I need to satiate my tex mex cravings. Best part is they’re a pretty short drive from me. I’ve had the cheese enchilada, the chimichanga, the spinach enchiladas, but my favorite of all is the vegan chile relleno. When I was eating the cheese enchilada, I mentioned to the waitress how excited I was for vegan tex mex. When I told her how much I missed the chile relleno, she mentioned that if I asked for my chile to be made vegan, it could be done. Sweet! The chile relleno doesn’t have the coating(which is pretty much a nasty egg thing), but when you bite into it, you get that perfect combo of cheese and chile. Ever since then, I’ve ordered the chile relleno. The beans are fabulous. The rice is meh, but I liven it up with some salsa and a little guacamole that comes with my chile. Of course, the chips and salsa are awesome. I especially enjoy the fact their chips aren’t coated with salt. I usually have to buy El Milagro chips to get a salt-free sensation. Don’t worry, the salsa will ensure you won’t miss the salt on the chips. The service isn’t as awesome as some places, but they do check on me occasionally. I’m prepared with what I need when I see them, so my needs get taken care of. If you’re not prepared, you’re not going to like eating there; so get your head out of the clouds and know if you need another drink, salsa, chips, etc.

I am surprised there is even one good review on this place. I went there once and will never go back. Food was bad, service was bad, atmosphere bad. Taco Bell makes much better food than this place.

With all the negative reviews, I just wanted to state my opinion. Sol’s Nieto is a ‘decent” Mexican Restaurant. I have been numerous amounts of time, and will go back. In fact, I just went on Saturday & Enjoyed two margaritas & chicken fajitas. I always go to the same lil restaurant, so I like to change it up a bit and its worth it. For two of us, two meals, and four drinks it was about 40 dollars. Not bad considering, it was alcohol. Never experienced the bad service, and generally eat outside on the patio — which is a nice view, and not to loud. Everyone has their own opinion, don’t knock it until you try it. :)

It’s really sad that you KNOW a Mexican place is going to be dead on Cinco de Mayo. But we thought, how bad can it REALLY be? Trust me. It can be that bad. We arrived around 6pm and got a table outside. We thought we scored! I ran into the bar to grab 2 margaritas, and I have never seen someone concoct a drink so slow in his life. I’m not a bartender. I’m not. So really, I should say that I don’t know what I’m talking about. Except I have a LOT of friends that are bartenders, and I also have this thing in my brain called«logic» and it dictates that to move things forward, it’s probably quicker to make two drinks at once than to COMPLETELY finish one drink before moving on to the other. That’s what this bartender did. I wasn’t sure if he liked torturing himself or me more. It was like watching a 17 year old make their first drink for their dad. Sad. Once I sat outside, we got chips and salsa right away. We felt sorta confident that service was going to be at least in the«sufficient» range once that happened. Ha! Nope! Not even close. Now, because more than half my friends are in the service industry I am VERYVERY generous with tips, no matter WHAT. No matter what goes wrong with my food, how bad a night the server is having. I know that there are simply things that the server can’t control. But to be honest? The place was dead. We didn’t need menus. We didn’t want to eat at all. In fact, all we wanted was ONEMOREROUNDOFMARGARITASONCINCODEMAYO. No one came by for close to an hour. We ordered and asked for the check. Ready for the zinger? It was a COMPLETELY different amount than what 1 paid at the bar. I agree with everyone else. I have zero idea how this place is open. It would be nice if it was a simple little hole in the wall mexican place that you could just pop into and eat dinner and grab a quick drink. Except for it’s nothing like that, and it’s wasting space. Bummer. Even the margaritas were weak. I mean really?

Horrible, horrible, HORRIBLE!!! And that’s hard to say as we’ve been frequenting this location for years. Tonight was a really, really bad night. So bad that we won’t be going back. Supposedly, Sol’s nephew was the manager on duty and I’d have to say that if I were Sol, I’d be disappointed. Our poor server was put in the middle of a big mess. We waited for over ANHOUR for our food(Mexican food!!! Hello… always FAST!) on a night where there were maybe 7 – 8 other tables… and we were seated at 8:30p. By the time our food finally came(after we were literally begging for it) my husbands dinner was C-O-L-D! Seriously… cold, like it had just come pre plated from the fridge to have a quick zap in the microwave. REALLY!!! We wait an hour(we’ve NEVER waited this long at this location) and it’s cold??? I went to speak with the Nephew Manager and was shocked at his absolute lack of customer service skills. WHO put this dude in charge? We are not a fussy customer, as far as customers go. We try to keep a low profile because we typically have 2 little ones in tow so we’re just happy to be there, ya know? So, here we are, out without the little ones with our friends, who are all out without their little ones, and we talk everyone into going there because the food was good and it would be fast because we all have sitters on the payroll at home. After my husband sent his meal back and asked that it was taken off the bill, the bill was presented to us and it was still wrong. Then, the«Newphew Manager» gave us a % off but the«percentage off» was a fraction of what he said it was. Guess he thought we wouldn’t check. In the meantime, I see 2 other tables full of unhappy diners(I see that one has already posted here tonight). We tried to get out as quickly as possible. Sad that we won’t EVER go back there again. It was a convenient location for us with okay food and an outdoor dining area — even though it looks out over a parking lot but in Texas we take what we can get. BTW, we were seated by said«Nephew Manager» and by the time the food arrived… ONEHOURLATER… we still didn’t have enough silverware. BASIC stuff here. Sorry Sols. Tonight was a total cluster of mistakes… ALL could have been fixed if your Nephew Manager would have had 1 clue about how to right a situation. Uncle Sol, this nephew of yours needs some BASIC training in customer service and managing his poor, embarrassed waitstaff(who, by the way, let us know that we were far from the 1st complaint this evening). I would have been so much happier at the end of this if he would have even tried to be present in the situation instead of sending the waitstaff out to do his dirty work. I made sure to let her know that she deserved much more from a manager. SHAME!

I agree with Diana on this one. To me it says a lot when you live less than a mile away from a restaurant and you have probably only been there 2 times in 2 years. I really wish this was a hole-in-the-wall tex-mex restaurant but its not. Instead it is an ordinary, plain not very good mexican restaurant. I have ordered queso and chips, fajitas and tacos in the past and none of them were good. Everything is pretty tasteless and bland. I can seriously cook better food at home so we have given up on this place. I honestly don’t know how they are still in business considering there is NEVER anyone in here. I drive by it all the time going to the grocery store and never see anyone eating here. Maybe soon something better will open up in its place!

This place is essentially around the block from my house, so I really want it to be a good, convenient, easy option, but it isn’t. Bottom line — The food just isn’t very good. The service just isn’t very good. The atmosphere just isn’t very good. I thought we’d give it one more shot last Saturday and try it for breakfast and guess what? Breakfast just wasn’t very good. Overall, the food is fairly tasteless. The beans taste like lard. Service is very, very slow, and I’ve never seen the place busy. I’d love it to be good, I really would, but it isn’t.

I woke up this morning with a slight headache(thank you champagne) and a rumblin’ belly. Kevin convinced me that it was a good idea to grab a quick breakfast at Sol’s before taking Shadow to White Rock Dog Park. It was not such a bright idea. First off, the service is pretty much terrible here. We had three different servers and none of them came out to check on us. They took our order, brought out the chips/salsa and fruit and delivered our food(which was wrong the first time around). It took me leaving with Shadow to go to the car to get her attention for our check. We sat on the patio because of our pup and he started panting after just a few minutes. I noticed no signs of dog bowls anywhere, so I emptied a small bowl on our table and filled it with water for him. When she delivered our food, she announced that because we used the bowl for him instead of their imaginary dog bowls, we would be charged for something they paid ten cents for. I was fine with this, but I wouldn’t have to buy the bowl had they brought a dog bowl for Shadow. And oddly enough after making such a stink over it, she forgot about the bowl and didn’t charge us. Back to the food. The salsa was tasty and I had to dump the whole thing over my migas plate to add some flavor to the dish. The eggs were overcooked, the cheese was nonexistent and I described it to Kevin as ‘something that they warmed up in the microwave from the grocery store freezer section.‘ We’ve visited Sol’s quite a few times and I keep thinking that next time it’ll be better, but it never is. It needs a serious snap into shape from Gordon Ramsey.

2 stars. One star for price(and their 2for1 coupons in the mail) and easy to reach location. One additional star for Dos Equis on tap and decent chips and salsa. No stars for poor service(even when no one else is there) and quality of food. We wanted for this to be good so badly. A shame we have to keep driving out of the neighborhood to find decent Mexican food.

Sol’s Nieto is one of a handful of Sol’s Tex-Mex restaurants in the Dallas area. I assume that this location is run by Sol’s nephew(hence the name). Sol’s Nieto offers up some solid tex-mex food with some real stand outs. The fajita’s are great, they have the standard beef & chicken, but also offer pork tenderloin, shrimp or veggie. The mixed beef, chicken & pork fajita’s is my family’s favorite. This is a neighborhood spot tucked away in the Albertson’s shopping center(south east corner of Mockingbird & Abrams). It is a great value, good size portions. I have only dined-in a few times, but when we do eat in the staff has always been friendly. We mostly do carry out. The food is always waiting packaged up nicely at the bar ready for pick up when we arrive. Hope you try it out, I don’t think you will regret it.

Blech! Food isn’t good. This is probably why they never have more than 3 tables seated even during happy hour. Chips and salsa are okay. And only 1 out of 3 visits has the service been good. House margaritas taste like water and sweet&sour mix. Food just isn’t good. Jukebox is worse. No more chances for Sol’s Nieto.

‘My mouth waters as I write! The grilled chicken dishes are great! The fajitas are excellent. I had chicken and shrimp last time and the chicken was so juicy and there were actually some shrimp included! The top shelf margaritas are really good too. Plus they have Mexican beer on tap. This place looks like a dive and is easy to pass since it is in a strip mall, but the food is consistently excellent. It has become our favorite Tex-Mex place.

Whenever you walk into a Mexican restaurant in Dallas at 7:30 on a Saturday night, and it’s not even at half its capacity — that can’t be a good sign. It wasn’t. Our hostess got us a water and an ice-tea right away, but over 10 minutes later, no waiter had even greeted us. When we tried to get a waiter’s attention, he cut us off and told us he’s be with us in a minute. His was rude to the point where Sigurd and I debated on walking out. When he did have a minute to come by our table, he was sweaty and avoided eye contact. His name is Polo O. according to our check. We only saw him twice more the rest of the night. After we drank half our sorry margaritas, we saw that they came out of a machine and cost $ 5. They didn’t taste like they had tequila or much mix in them, they just tasted like snow cones with food coloring. We split an order of steak and shrimp fajitas, and the order came out with four shrimps. The fajita meat wasn’t cut up and sat on top an onion explosion. Amongst the onion chaos, I found one strip of lonely, abandoned bell pepper. I felt so sorry for it that I ate it right away to put it out of its misery. The fajitas tasted on the bland side, but they weren’t awful. However, the chips and salsa were the best part of the meal. My overall impression about the place is that the waitstaff and the cooks could care less about what they serve. I imagine this place can’t stay open much longer if the Saturday night we were there is any bellwether. Sol’s should clear out and make way for a decent Mexican food place.

Sol’s makes a decent breakfast. I hesitated to try it because I was so unimpressed with dinner, but I was in the area and hungry, so I checked it out. Definitely acceptable. Jon got the french toast, one friend and I had Huevos Mexicanos, and another friend had Migas; each was about $ 7. We all enjoyed our food. Complimentary fruit salads along with chips and salsa were also a nice touch. I don’t recommend the coffee, but otherwise, this is a fine choice, especially if IHOP is on a wait, which it always seems to be.

Sol’s is hidden away in a corner between an Albertson’s and an IHOP. It’s located at the intersection of Abrams and Mockingbird. I was hopeful that this would be a great little dive, but it’s really not. The food was good. I had the enchilada combination which consisted of a beef enchilada with chili con carne, a chicken enchilada with salsa verde, and a cheese enchilada with sour cream sauce, rice and beans for $ 8.95. We also ordered some chili con queso. The queso tasted like the cheese sauce you get from Pancho’s. It had a slight cheddar taste to the thin yellow sauce, there may have been some tomato or pepper bits, but I couldn’t really find them. The salsa was similar to canned tomatoes put in a blender with a couple of peppers. The meal was fine but seriously uneventful. The chili con carne had a really heavy chili powder flavor that I usually like, but really needed the beef in the enchilada to be less bland to stand out. The sour cream sauce tasted like they whipped up a tub of sour cream and poured it over the enchilada then grated some Monterrey jack on it. The chicken enchilada with the salsa verde was pretty good. It had big chunks of dark meat chicken covered in a tart green tomatillo sauce and jack cheese. The beans were the high point of the meal, I’m guessing extra lard was involved. All in all, this place was okay if you’re in the neighborhood and not wanting to drive. But in a city full of creative, authentic, cheap, Mexican food, it’s hard to get by with«okay.» NOTE: they do have a buy-one, get-one-free coupon in the Passbook.
