Wish I could be a welcoming back party. but my last experience was unacceptable. With some mediocre cali rolls, and terrible terrible sea eel sashimi, I had immediately regretted spending my time driving to Sushi Yama at 12 a few days back. The waitress was completely distracted and went to talk to her friend, never came back after she got our order. Seated in a dark area, and it has been over a year since I was there I didn‘t put one beside sea eel sushi, but at the end of the box, I circled the price 4.50 for sea eel sushi. Despite that I repeated ‘sea eel sushi‘ and she repeated it back a few times as if she got it. I had a total order of 2 fresh water eel rolls, one dragon roll, one bowl of soup. I should have just ordered soup. Then came out our food. Everything looked alright besides that there was 5 pieces of sea eel sashimi. I figured it was okay, I love eel but had wanted the sushi. I decided I would go ahead and eat that, but after trying one piece and finding it way beyond terrible that I would find it smart to ask my partner what he thought. The eel was super dry, overly smelly, grainy, catfish texture? It was straight up terrible. My boyfriend gagged, and almost threw up. I still can‘t believe how bad the eel was. I love eel, and it‘s been so long since I had it –near– anything would have been okay is the sad part. I think if the chief is Japanese, and he wouldn‘t eat the eel he has. he shouldn‘t serve it. Or they should close and reopen when they learn that if they don‘t have what someone orders not to go wrestle it away from a cat outside just to serve it. This was super disapointing for me, and I wont be back. :/ I do half recommend the soup they have. It was the highlight of anything I ate there. But probably not best for those on a diet, as soon as it cooled some a large line of fat formed. Otherwise it was good.

Yes, this place has reopened. Went there at their soft opening(3 days prior to grand opening). The ambiance is the same, the décor is the same but they removed some tables which they may need to put back because the place was so packed there was a line by the time we left. The menu has many of the same items but I think the price is lower than before. The sushi rolls need to be wrapped a little more tightly but they were tasty. My friend had tempura and you could have fed an Army the portion was so huge! I think the portions should be smaller so ordering many dishes, like in Japan, is a possibility. I had nabeyaki udon and it was a bit on the sweet side for my pleasure. All in all, it is still a good place to go for good Japanese food. They said they did not have a liquor license yet but if you wanted sake, wine or domestic beer, they could serve you. Not sure what that meant because I thought you needed a liquor license to serve any alcohol. Who knows. But they said the license would be effective at the grand opening so next time I shall check.

It may be small but consider it a local treasure. This is quite possibly the most authentic Japanese place I’ve found since moving to Texas. Not so much the sushi but everything else. Like I said, it’s small. So don’t come here with a group or large family. And it’s definitely not very kid friendly. It’s also not very good if you’re not terribly adventurous. If you want basic sushi there’s plenty of other places. Their sunomono salad is awesome(better than other places that serve it). But my favorite is that they serve the most delicious takoyaki. I’ve yet to find another place in the area that has it other than trying to find it frozen to cook at the asian grocery store. A super rare treat! They also have a much more expansive dessert menu than most other Japanese places as well. Going here is definitely a treat or special occasion but it’s well worth it. My best advice is to call ahead of time and ask what wait times are. It can get crowded pretty fast.

Yeah, always good, always what I expect and that’s good quality sushi and Saturday nights and one other night they have dollar sushi… it’s the best. They also have all kinds of other yummies there a la Japan, but the Ramen is better at Robata Sushi. And Robata Sushi has some fantastic sushi and other dishes a la Japan… both restaurants are among my favorite Japanese Restaurants in DFW. UPDATE: I have not eaten here since it has reopened under the understudy of the former owner, but it is likely still very good and I need to give it a try under the new ownership.

I’ve been here a few times, and the food is good enough to keep me coming back. I usually come for their more authentic Japanese fare, which they have a good selection of. Many items on their menu you won’t find at typical Japanese/sushi restaurants. The food itself is well-seasoned and always hits the spot! There are a few things that could some improvement. Their waitresses are nice, but the service can be extremely sloooww sometimes. Don’t come here if you’re in a rush and looking for a quick bite. Also I have found the food quality to be somewhat inconsistent. I often get the ramen, which is usually pretty good, but there have been days when it came out really, really salty. I’ve also tried the sushi($ 1 sushi Tuesday and Saturday nights!), which was decent. Nothing to complain about, but nothing special either. As far as recommendations go, I would suggest trying their fried chicken gizzards, ramen, and taiyaki for dessert!

This was one of the worst dining experiences I’ve had in a while, and I don’t dole out a lot of one star reviews. That $ 1 sushi was so bad I don’t even wanna review it. The portions are so tiny that it’s not even a good deal. I left hungry, without eating a couple of the pieces we’d ordered due to the poor quality. One of the cuts of fish had weird looking veins or discoloration and smelled super fishy. Pick any random sushi restaurant in a strip mall and I’m sure you’ll do better than this place.

Dunno why it smells in here, but Sushiyama is a nice authentic japanese joint offering good food. Tuesdays and Saturdays are $ 1 sushi night, so if you ever want some good sushi, you should check this place out on one of those days. They have tons of small appetizer items, from spam musubi to grilled squid. They also offer many noodles like ramen and udon. The place doesn’t have ALOT of seating so expect to wait a little during peak times.

? Yes that intense and strange unidentifiable chemical smell dampens the sushi yama experience. It even feels toxic, like a hair treatment gone bad. It permeates the entire space from front to back, but you’ll probably be used to the smell by the time your food comes out. Otherwise a decent Japanese hole in the wall, in a hidden corner of a random strip mall near the Forest Lane DART station spells out authentic fun in Dallas’ tepid Asian food scene. The crowd felt like intimate regulars — and the guy we gave our table up for quietly paid for our bottle of sake. The walls were littered with yellow pieces of paper naming dishes and their prices in English and Japanese. Japanese staff and patrons — décor is frayed around the edges. $ 13 wednesdays discounted bento box was good but I wouldn’t want to pay more. Go for atmosphere. Perhaps you could order something unusual here but the menu seemed fairly standard.

I AMSOHAPPY I FOUNDTHISPLACE!!! And it’s all thanks to my bf… THANKYOU! I have been looking for an authentic Japanese restaurant because I absolutely love Japanese food — I especially love Japanese curry and when I say Curry Udon and Donkatsu curry. I was über happy. So of course we ordered those two dishes and my taste buds were in heaven!!! The best curry I’ve had in a looong time and it was just so comforting to eat the food and feel like I was back home in the bay area when Japanese food is the best! Sushiyama is by far the best Japanese Restaurant in the DFW area and I dare anyone to come try this place out and not think it’s the best AUTHENTIC Japanese food you’ve tried. I’ll definitely be back to try everything else on the menu… that’s going to require a LOT of visits. who’s with me?!? :)

Show up early for dollar sushi night and wait at the door like cats, otherwise, you may be waiting for while before you get a table. *Meow. Scratch scratch*. Once let inside, order an array of sushi, and stuff yourself retarded. Considering the sushi I had was $ 1 a piece, I was pretty impressed with the quality. I was also impressed with the menu. I tried mackerel sushi, which I’ve never had before, as well as a few other types of fish I typically don’t see offered at other sushi places. Service can be a tad slow, the karaōke machine music can get into your head in a bad way, and dolla sushi night can be really crowded, but other than that, Sushiyama is a lot of fun. As other Unilocalers have stated — beware the Tear Drop. It’s equivalent to putting dragon balls in your mouth.

I go here pretty much every week… mainly because my best friend is always craving it. The bento boxes are okay, I definitely would not get a bento box if it wasn’t Wednesday(half-off bento box day). Tuesdays and Saturdays are dollar-sushi days. The sushi is pretty good, it’s just too bad it takes a really long time for them to come out. A lot of my friends go crazy for the takoyaki but I think it’s an acquired taste because it tasted pretty weird and exotic to me, haha. This place has the best spider roll. The green tea ice cream here is better than the green tea ice cream other places. There’s still a lot more dishes I’m excited to try, though! Plus they open until 2am!

I love this place. This is the only place I go for my 1 am sushi cravings. Sushi World isn’t an option. They have other stuff besides sushi. Try the Japanese pancake and the stewed pig’s feet. Oh! And the octopus balls too.

I had returned several times and I like it less each time I went. First, starting with the good, this restaurant is owned and operated by Japanese people. Second, they have menu items that you cannot find anywhere else including ramen, natto, and a wide array of izakaya and yakitory dishes. Lastly, the $ 1 sushi is a good deal.(unless you can put away 40 pieces) Now the bad, first, the wait at this place is absurdly long. I think each time that I have gone, I have never finished less than 2 hrs. I often stare at the chef and see them working at a glacial speed and staring into space. Second, I HATE the fact that no one greets you when you walk in the door. To me, that is very rude and totally out of character for a Japanese restaurant. I am afraid this is a place that you will fall in love with the first time you visit, only then to discover that it is «good from afar, far from good.»

I’m picky about my sushi. Going to a dollar sushi night is definitely against my nature. I don’t want to blow a giant wad of cash unnecessarily but you really do get what you pay for. Dollar sushi night at Sushiyama just reinforced that for me. The pros: they DO have a good selection of dollar items. The cons: it IS small sushi, but worse, it’s mediocre sushi. Why bother? Last time I was here was 5 years ago because they served me ikura that was solidified: no liquid inside the salmon roe: just congealed egg. When I brought it to their attention, they told me that was how it was supposed to be. Riiiigggghht. This time, my uni(not on the dollar menu) was freezing cold and had the molten ice cream look to it, i.e. not good. The last piece went un-eaten. The rest of the sushi just had that filler material taste in my opinion. So the three stars is for the ability to get late night food. And for the variety of cooked food which is pretty good. But if the word SUSHI is in your name, you really need to bring it with a little more effort don’t cha think?

Ok… its not often that I can find a restaurant that one day is AMAZING, and then the next day… FLATOUTDISGUSTING! I mean… just months ago, I was enjoying this gem and declaring it my fave Japanese restaurant. But now… I need the community to know just how AWFUL this place can be on a bad night. RUBBERYFISHY squid sushi, rolls that were ALLRICE and very little anything else, in fact we ordered an eel roll and i didn’t even see ANY eel!!! I had to send it back… was pretty pissed about that. WHATHAPPENED??? Where was the owner? Do I need to call Gordon Ramsay??? I’m not coming back.

Katsu curry. Om nom nom nom. I came here with my brother and bestie last Sat. ZOMG this place was packed. This place was terribly hot(broken A/C) and the service is slowwwww. I honestly broke a sweat just sitting there. It was pretty gross. I should have thought about how heat + sushi is never really a good idea. My dollar sushi pieces came out a bit warm. –_-’ Their«outrageously spicy tuna roll» was not spicy at all. They should have added some yellow mustard powder for an extra kick. My bestie said their curry rocked so that’s what I ordered. It was pretty awesome. I would definitely come back for their curry. Perhaps during the winter time. :) I wanted to have dessert but the waitress never really came by. we had to flag her down to pay for dinner. In a nutshell: Bring cash. You don’t want to wait an extra 25 min to get your card back. Have atleast an hr and a half for dinner. know that you will spend most of your time waiting. Go to the restroom prior to going there. it’s pretty gross. Try their Katsu Curry :) it’s pretty yummy– although they should serve it in a bowl instead of a plate. Oh and order dessert when you order your entrée– or else you will never be able to order it!

Yes! Menu items posted on the wall are written in Japanese and I have absolutely no idea what some of them are! That means it’s authentic… Sushiyama definitely has its charm, despite being sandwiched in a strip mall between a shady billiards club and an empty-looking English pub. It’s a small place, but the people are friendly, and the food delicious. We came on a Saturday night, and they had $ 1 sushi. I didn’t order any, but I did notice how my friend’s sushi was quite a bit on the small side. I tried the Omu-rice, which is an omelet, but instead of cheese, there’s rice. YUM! It was delicious. What will definitely bring me back is their selection — they had a lot of different noodle and rice dishes, like ramen and soba and udon. Bento and some of the other entrees seemed a little on the pricey side(although I think there’s a special on those on Wednesdays for around $ 12), but you can definitely get some delicious-looking noodle bowls for under $ 10. One negative was just how LONG it took our food to come out. We sat for over an hour before everyone at the table had their food.(There were only a few servers, but come on… does it really take that long to slap some sashimi on some rice? And it’s a small restaurant!) Go to Sushiyama when you’re craving some Japanese food in an authentic setting, but make sure you’ve got some time on your hands.
