I found Tranquilo via LivingSocial right after moving back to the area and since two of my doctors recommended I try yoga, I gave it a shot. I promptly joined the studio. I no longer attend only because it is too far a drive from where I live now. The space is clean, attractive and *hehe* tranquil, with nice hardwood floors and a peaceful vibe. I’ve taken classes from several of the instructors(Johnny, Amy, Jeff) and they are all good though very different. Johnny’s classes are the ass-kicking intense workout — it amazes me how tired and sweaty a non-aerobic yoga workout can make you. Amy’s are a little more forgiving, but still will work up a huge sweat. Jeff’s restorative class is what I always thought of as guided meditation — you won’t sweat in that one but it is very relaxing. I had no experience with yoga so did not know what to expect, but I did not feel awkward around all the other people who clearly knew what they were doing — it was very laid back. People were of all shapes and sizes so being fat didn’t bother me too much either. As I said, if I lived close by I would still be a member, but I was finding it too hard to get down to Oak Cliff regularly. If you’re a local, you should check it out!

In perfect harmony! I had never tried yoga before in my life. Like many other people, I’d fallen into the rut of hardly exercising, let alone being fit. So when my friend Vi invited me at first I was apprehensive about trying it. Fortunately, I had the gull to believe that this was a ladies excuse for exercise and that it would be a piece of cake. So on DFW free day of Yoga I was lucky enough to have booked a spot at Tranquilo. Once we arrived I was impressed, just a small store front right next to Café Brazil in the Bishop Art’s district. The interior was very nice, all wood floors and tranquil(or Tranquilo in Spanish) colors and accents. I immediately felt very mellow and joined the others on the floor. The room was a little warm, those bodies create a lot of heat during yoga! Johnny, the instructor was nothing like what I was expecting. He was such a cool guy. Not only did he include humor into the class, but he was so helpful throughout the entire class. Mind you I was having the worst time trying to complete some of the poses, he stealthy moved through the room and quietly helped me along, saving my already bruised pride. He even went further by dimming the light as we became even more drenched in sweat. He made the whole experience inviting and non-judgmental. So what did I think of yoga? I loved it, not only do I have a new respect for the yoga mat carrying ladies. I felt a complete sense of refreshment and in the end, completely tranquilo.

Finally a decent yoga studio in Dallas. The yang classes at the ass crack of dawn are actually a great way to start the day. Jeff is an awesome instructor. Overall, very UN-yoga-like people. Very down to earth, friendly, welcoming for people who are interested in learning more. Jeff is the best. The restorative class on Sunday afternoons saves my butt every week. Yeah for yoga!

I am not a group exercise sort, and I shudder at the thought of motivation by bracelet color, so Tranquilo yoga is a welcome respite from the norm. I’ve been going there about three times a week for a month, and it’s been the best investment of my time in years. The studio provides towels and mats if you need them and water to refill your bottle. The mood is peaceful, the music hip and cool – I’ve only done the flow class, as I need each hour to be my aerobic, strength, and flexibility workout. John encourages patience in those of us(self included) that start out weak and inflexible; I can see changes in my body and feel stronger after only one month of classes. The classes work for all levels of ability. A friend had never practiced yoga in her life and is now a regular. Great resource! Best yoga studio(of 4 I’ve attended). Highly recommend it.
