I love the Rec Pool; the staff is top-notch. I agree with Deb, that an overhaul would be awesome, but even without a make-over I will continue to take my kids there, and have a blast, all summer(and I’ll take them here next summer too).

As a UCD grad and in-town resident I’m embarrassed by this facility. The Rec Pool is in serious need of an overhaul or at the very least condemning. The last two times that I’ve gone, the pool was shut down due to… uhm, fecal matter in the pool(ugh!). Once I witnessed a mother encouraging her kid to drop-trou and pee in the pool drain at the top of the stairs instead of using the bathroom. What did the two(yes, two lifeguards for the entire complex) do? Nothing. There have been other times that this complex has been closed due to the poo, since they don’t require that infants and kids wear swim diapers. And of course it doesn’t feel like a family pool because the baby pool wasn’t renovated when it was falling apart, it was merely filled in and had sod slapped on the top. I’m surprised that UCD doesn’t care more about this facility — it’s the worst one I’ve seen on campus. The showers and changing room look about as old as Hickey Gym(only without having been touched since 1950). With all the exposed rafters, cobwebs and rusting heaters it’s possible that you could film a mini-series of the Boxcar Children or a live animation of Scooby Doo(pun intended). The chairs and tables on the patio are rusted and falling apart. The staff is equally in need of an upgrade on etiquette and responsibility. With the Davis City Pools being less expensive($ 3.75 vs. $ 4.50 with no alumni discount anymore), more recently upgraded, higher quality and quantity of staff along with fewer bowel«movem-events», I’m never going back to the Rec Poo… l.
