Love this place. The food is great and the old building, 1883, it’s in is amazing. The owners are on site and do a great job.

Impressive! This family owned business is a must see for people who like some history with their food! I believe this hotel — restaurant — bar was built in the late 1800’s and it still has that old time charm. You really feel like you are walking back in time when you enter. The first room has a old hotel check-in desk, with the slots for keys and mail for each hotel room. The door to the right takes you into the bar which is all made of dark wood and also has a few tables to enjoy your beverage. The other door leads to a sitting room which I could imagine was a place for guest to meet at one time. Eventually you will enter one of the dinning areas which is as nostalgic as every other part of the business. White tablecloths with complete table settings await as you are seated. Service was excellent, both attentive and friendly. We where there for lunch so each of us had either a sandwich or one if the many dinners that were on the menu. All of us loved our meals which included either soup or a salad all for about $ 10. We would go back again in a heartbeat!

This is my «go to» place whenever I have a guest from out of town. It reeks of elegance in a comfortable and traditional way. The menu is classic, as would be expected, always well prepared and delicious. They have the best lamb chops in the area, juicy, thick and tasty. The steaks are larger than average and well-aged. The décor and atmosphere are early twentieth or late 19th century. McKim will make sure your wishes are respected. There is a cozy fireplace in the main dining room. This has been popular for decades and deserves its reputation. Prices are just a tad above average, but worth every dollar.

Fantastic dinner. Cooked as requested. Owners very friendly and great hosts. Special items of traditional fare. Relaxed atmosphere. Service was quiet and professional. Will return on next visit to Packer game. We are from Richmond, Virginia and appreciate historic ambiance. Bravo to family ownership of generations.

Wow, this place rocks. I took a New York friend who is very particular about his food to the Union Hotel. I figured this might be the only restaurant that has good food and good culture. It didn’t fail me. My friend enjoyed both the food and the ambiance. I ordered the tenderloin steak(medium) and he ordered porterhouse steak(medium rare). I loved mine, it is super juicy and I just couldn’t stop eating. My friend enjoyed his steak too, it was a little overcooked, almost medium, but acceptable. Last time I was here I ordered the salmon, it was yummy too. Can’t believe Green Bay has this kind of restaurant. It was one of the best steakhouse I ever been to.

Had the tuna(it was the special) was the best tuna I’ve had in ages. Cooked to perfection and tasty. The carrot cake dessert was out of this world too.

McKim(owner) gets it! He over-sees this operation and is a stickler for detail(you can see this for yourself on your first visit). This place has been in the family for a long time and is your prototypical Wisconsin Supper Club. My wife and I go here a few times a month and leave wondering why we venture away from this place looking for something better… there isn’t!

I visit the union at least once per year and I love the place. Friendly service, clean rooms, great food and an atmosphere that can’t be beat. I had the porterhouse medium. It came out medium minus which was fine by me. Between relish tray, salad, soup, ~20 oz porterhouse, potatoe, and carrot cake the only thing I was missing was a bigger appetite. Can’t wait to go back!

Took our parents there from out of town. Second time through, it wasn’t quite as magical but still enjoyed ourselves very much. The drinks are so reasonably priced! I love a dining experience that becomes an event! Take your parents!

I stayed at the Union Hotel at the end of September, when I came home for my brother’s wedding. I grew up in Green Bay, and while I’d never been in the hotel before, I remembered it from when I was a kid. I had always wanted to stay there, and this time I got my chance. First off, McKim is the owner and he’s fantastic. They don’t have a website and don’t take online reservations, so you will have the pleasure of talking to him on the phone when you book your room. He’s warm, funny and gracious, plus the hotel has been in his family for generations! Delta lost one of our bags and he stayed up til 11:00 to receive the bag and then personally dropped it off at our door. There are very few staff, so everything has a personal touch. Second, the price was so right! We chose the larger room, with an attached sitting room and in-suite bath(some rooms have a bath down the hall. I poked around a bit and saw the shared baths. They were impeccably clean and well stocked.) It was $ 89 a night, which is way less than something like the Hyatt, and comparable to a less nice hotel, like a Days Inn. With taxes it came to $ 308. Third, the room was great. It was nice to have the extra space so we didn’t feel on top of each other. The bed was very comfortable, the carpet looked brand new and the bathroom was clean and well stocked. There were also beautiful pieces of antique furniture including wing-backed chairs, a bureau, a wardrobe to hang things, a dresser, a side table, night stands, etc. The hotel is over 100 years old, so everything is oozing with character. The fixtures, furniture and wallpaper all look original. There is a restaurant downstairs that serves classic supper club fare, like pork chops and steaks. The attached bar looks straight out of the 1950’s with beautiful wood details, booths and a great U shaped bar. We didn’t make it for dinner, but we had a couple of drinks in the bar. They have tons of local brews on tap and a good selection of liquors. McKim was there, along with a great bartender and some locals. We chatted with folks, sipped our drinks and enjoyed how disarmingly nice everyone was. Five stars for sure, we will definitely be back!

My family likes to go here a few times a year for celebration dinners. The Union Hotel is amazing. It has an intimate, supper club ambiance. The cuisine is traditional American, offering steak and seafood selections. At first glance it may seem pricey; the last time I was there I had the scallop dinner — it was $ 28.50. However, with it was soup, salad, a side, and a dessert included in the price. I received about 8 scallops, all cooked to perfection.

You’re going to want to visit the Union Hotel during the Christmas season to see their tree with a thousand lights. Actually, there’s probably more than a thousand lights. Rather than go through the intricate, tiring process of unwinding every strand from each branch, the proprietor sticks the whole thing in a bag and chucks it at the end of the season. The atmosphere is very turn of the century with gleaming woodwork, original toile wallpaper in the dining room, and a cozy bar area that makes you wish you had a smoking jacket. The food is simple and consistently delicious. They cut their own steaks and, with advance notice, can serve you«the Murphy,» which is a roast-sized portion that could probably feed a family of 4. The fish is no less impressive, and each meal comes with salad, relish tray, and choice of side. Dinners comes with choice of soup and dessert, if you still have enough room after so many courses. Folks of my generation likely dub the Union a «special occasion» restaurant, but the blue hairs treat it as a supper club. I only hope we young’uns can grow into the tradition and keep this lovely place running. If I had one complaint, and it’s more of an observation, it’s that the bartenders didn’t know how to make a Sidecar. Caught me by surprise as it seems one of maybe a dozen classic cocktails that everyone behind a bar should know how to make, and the Union Hotel is the quintessential place to order one. Great wine list though, which I know is their focus. Go to the Union Hotel. There are other great places in town, other wonderful steakhouses, but the experience of this place cannot be replicated.

Visits: One(so far) When: Friday 7÷13÷126:45pm Company: Me Cuisine: Classic northeastern Wisconsin supper club/steakhouse. Wet aged(14 – 16 days, in house) steaks, pan fried walleye, variety of fish entrees included perch. Vibe: Subdued, historic, peaceful. Average age 60 plus. Historic hotel over 100 years old, in family(present owner a former high school math and computer programming teacher who absolutely loves running this place and whose mission is making the wine list the premier, the crème de la crème, of wine selections in the area) for 95 years. Volume: Low. Décor: Per the owner«arts and crafts from 1930’s». The bar has subdued lighting, very old feel to it. Dining room with Naugehyde booths, wall sconces, wall paper, high ceilings. Second dining room with tables, historic pictures on the walls. Another Unilocaler stated the Union Hotel was Vince Lombardi’s favorite restaurant and he could rise from the dead and feel totally at home here. I agree. It has sort of a 60’s classic supper club feel to it. Very cool atmosphere. Warm, cozy ambiance. Service: Excellent. When you arrive, you sit at the bar, order your drinks and are assigned a waiter/waitress. The waitstaff then gives you a menu, ultimately takes your order, and assigns you a table or booth. You then move to the dining room where a relish tray(lots of super fresh and crunchy carrot sticks, celery, and peppers, accompanied by liver pâté, ham salad and cheese spread), bread basket(variety of fresh baked rolls) and crackers await at your table. Both the bartender and the waitress were excellent. The owner was beyond excellent, talked to me at length about the restaurant, the steaks, the wines. Drinks: Half bottle 2003 Château Montelena(go «Bottle Shock») Cabernet Sauvignon $ 48.50. Incredible wine list, over 300 different wines, priced economy to luxurious, but all very reasonably priced. Some of the wines here are cheaper than what you can buy them on the internet, if you can buy them at all. Wine cellar with over 2000 bottles. Over 50 half bottle selections. By far the best selection of wine in the area. Mission accomplished. Food: Meyer Natural Angus(Loveland, CO) prime filet mignon cooked to perfection, so tender it could be cut with a fork. Very distinctive flavor. Accompanied by home made«tater tots», which were actually not the breaded deep fat grease bombs most places serve, but rather shredded potatoes fried but not greasy. Fresh salad with French Roquefort dressing. Dessert was a French silk(chocolate) pie with whipped cream– decadent. Total: $ 93.90 Given the ingredients(on Meyer’s website, the smallest(5 ounce) filet mignon costs $ 28, before shipping), the level of dining, and the fact that the wine was over 50% of this bill, I consider this reasonable. Overall: Highly recommend for a «splurge» dinner. The only reason I rated this four rather than five stars is the lack of anything on the menu vegetarian friendly. I really think in 2012 it is incumbent upon fine dining establishments to provide at least one healthy, whole food, plant based choice in addition to the classics. A restaurant this good, with a wine list this extensive really needs to cater to a larger group.

I love the Nostalgic vibe. Walk in and love the bar and the wine list is very fair mark up. The only complaint I have is– can they grill their fish and scallops? Why is all fried in butter? What is about Green Bay that they just can’t seem to have healthy restaurants? Anyway– this place is worth checking out

Well, what can you say about a small hotel and restaurant that’s been around for decades? First off, the Union Hotel is a landmark in De Pere, I believe it’s one of the oldest hotels in the Green Bay area. It’s quaint and nostalgic. Myself and my friends started in the bar for drinks(I have written about the bar in a previous review), it was packed and in true Wisconsin style and hospitality, the bartender asked two people to move down to allow the three of us to sit at the bar! I love the bartender here, he wears a bow tie and is a classic bartender, knows everyone, how to make everything and everything going on in De Pere. We had a couple of drinks and then ordered at the bar, then walked to our table. The Union is a true, classic Wisconsin supper club(looks exactly, like you stepped back in the forties). The dining room is pretty and looks fancy, but being true to Wisconsin style, you don’t necessarily have to get dressed up. When you sit down, there is a bread basket and a crudite plate with vegetables and three different ramekins of spreads. One was chopped liver, not sure what the other two were. The menu at the Union leans heavily on Beef, but they also have a number of fish specials and seafood like scallops. Dinner starts with a classic salad, followed by your entrée. The food is good. While I would say it isn’t Hinterland quality, it does deserve four stars. What makes this place is the surroundings and the excellent service they offer. Try the union, it will be an experience you won’t soon forget. Entrees average between $ 20.00 and $ 30.00 dollars, but you will not leave hungry! Cheers!!!

Very nice classic hotel and restaurant. The hotel is more than a hundred years old, which is ancient by American standards. Has been run by the same families for multiple generations. We went there after a Packers game to enjoy a great dinner and to let the post-game traffic settle down a little. Union Hotel has a full bar with nice dark woodwork, extensive and expensive wine list, and very nice restaurant which can probably seat a bit under 100 people. We had a bottle of Australian red which was different from European and American wines but quite good in its own way. I had the pan fried walleye which was a big portion slightly browned in butter in almost a French style. It was tasty and sophisticated both in terms of pan flavor and letting quite a bit of the fish’s fresh flavor through. The Italian vinegrette salad dressing was perfect. The bread and dip appetizer board was very nice, with obviously homemade bread morsels and dips. Others had steak which looked perfect, fried scallops, and seared ahi steaks. All were very generous portions with very good ingredients very well cooked. This is a very good restaurant and probably has been for many decades. Highly recommended for both a classic dining experience and for very good, honest food.
