When I enter the small confines of the Union Café, I feel like I’m entering someone’s kitchen. The clean and bright room is naturally lit and inviting. A lone register sits along the back wall of the dining room, along with a blackboard with the day’s specials. Judging from the samples I saw on my visit, the café doesn’t exclusively serve Mexican food, as I saw steaks and several other non-Mexican dishes being offered. This is congruent with the name of the place as well as the lightly-Mexican décor on the walls within — it’s Mexican food in which the Union Café primarily dabbles, but it’s not the end-all, be-all. Before my meal came, I received some complimentary homemade chips and tomatillo salsa. I doubt they go so far as to grind the corn themselves, but just taking the time to cut and fry some tortillas is appreciated. Giving them to me for free is also nice, as I was surprised how many Mexican restaurants charge you for it. I ordered the Parrillada plate during my visit. I was a bit put off by the price of the plate until I saw just how much food I was getting — a sampler of sorts, with a quesadilla, sausage, and beef fajita components. A healthy dab of guacamole, a grilled onion, and a spicy soup came with the meal. Though eating a heavier lunch than I would have liked, I was quite pleased as I paid and left. The little touches combined with a good variety in flavor and menu items were enough to make me a repeat customer.

I agree with Nick’s review. I do like how the tacos come with different yummy condiments: guacamole, pico de gallo, whatever mayo-type sauce they have, cabbage. A plus is that they have chips and salsa that you can snack on while you wait. Ranchero/borracho beans, whatever you want to call them, are not for me. I guess I am just not that Texas…

Decent food. The Fish Tacos are pretty good, they can compete with Brown Bag’s tacos. The only downside is the side. Borracho beans need some work. You can sub those out for rice or something like that, but even that isnt great.
