My first visit here I had a pulled pork sandwich for a $ 1, and got some sides from their buffet bar. I was really impressed with the selection of sides. I ate the broccoli and tomato salad and french fries. Everything was great! I’m glad I found this little place that I’ve been overlooking for a long time. Plus, I’m not even a big fan of BBQ.

First let me say that the BBQ here is not bad. I am giving this place a 1 star due to shady business practices. I ordered 3 of the Monday specials. When I went up to pay the man swiped my card waited for a while then said the card machine wasn’t working. He proceeded to start writing down my card numbers on a clipboard in broad daylight — without asking. This made me feel a little bit uncomfortable but I let it go. After he finished writing down my card numbers I asked for a receipt. There was no way I was walking out without getting a receipt. The man refused to give me a receipt, either hand written or otherwise. I told him I was not leaving until I got a receipt and asked to speak to a supervisor. He became very defensive, eventually took my food and scratched out my card number. Was I being overly cautious? Maybe so. But it only takes one bad employee to give themselves a $ 50 tip and if you have no receipt you have no way to dispute it.

This IS the best BBQ in Denton and the sides are consistently good. Most places either get the sides right(Metzler’s) or the meat(Rudy’s) but very rarely are both good. I recommend the ribs and turkey as their best meat dishes. They are wood smoked(not boiled). The tomato/cucumber salad and the potato salads are exceptional. Some reviews mention cold bread and fries. The secret is to ask for these. They typically make them«to-order» and are happy to do so. If you ever get a chance to try their stuffing/dressing(like for Thanksgiving meals) order double of what you think people might eat. This is not on their menu and should probably replace their mac n’cheese. The jalapeño sausage is great for gringos(like me) — good seasoning but very little heat. The baked potato is a well-kept secret. It really IS baked(not boiled); makes all the difference and is very good with the turkey and cheese on top. The owner is there every day and he truly cares about what he serves. If you don’t get what you want, be sure that he knows about it. Apparently, this restaurant is linked to the one in Lewisville — but the food and service is much better in Denton.

Definitely not the«Best Darn BBQ in Town» by any stretch of the imagination. When they were first coming over from Lewisville there was rumors of them offering the occasional all you can eat special of BBQ from time to time, but when I inquired they had no idea what I was talking about, so I assume that idea which I swore I saw in an ad of some sort, went by the wayside, just like my feelings for this place… Would rather go to Metzlers or Smokehouse for sure.

BBQ is good but God forbid you get some fresh rolls or fries here. Always feel rushed too.

A chef friend raved about this place, so I had to try it. I need to spirit her away to Pecan Lodge or Lockhart Smokehouse in Dallas; Clark’s Outpost in Tioga; or even Metzler’s in Denton. The food was served buffet style, which isn’t the kiss of death — after all the much better Fat Cow in Lewisville does that — but the meats had no real smoke flavor. The brisket was roast beef, the ribs were a bit tough and tasteless. The sausage was good, but that was probably due to the food service truck more than to the folks at the Old House BBQ. The sides were… I’m sorry… my mother always told me if you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all. The service was good, the people were friendly, but I really see no reason to go back.

So I went in recently one evening to satisfy my hunger for some smoked meat, after seeing that they had opened in a Denton Strip Center space formerly occupied by Hooyah Burritos. It was disappointing. I had chose ribs, brisket and sausage on the three meat plate with pinto beans and potato salad as my sides. The brisket and ribs had been wrapped in plastic to save it for later serving and had lost all its crispy bark. They had a sour taste. The sausage was ok, but reminded me of store bought smoked sausage. The beans were fair but the potato salad tasted like it came from a carton available at your local grocery store deli. I had ordered my food to-go, so I had taken a chance by not staying on the premesis to lodge a complaint. I give this place two stars for the décor and layout. The lone staffer acted as if I was bother to him while he cut and placed my items in a styrofoam container. I probably won’t go back.

Now I’m not going to say this is the best BBQ I’ve ever had but it is definitely the best I’ve had in Denton. Yes, I know everyone swears by Rudy’s but honestly, I don’t like Rudy’s that much. This place has hot, fresh rolls and a big selection of tasty sides(including jalapeño pinto beans, my favorite!). The meats were moist and smoky, there is a selection of BBQ sauce and the hot was really good when mixed with the sweet sauce. Their sweet tea is good and fresh and they have SOFTSERVEICECREAM! I mean really… it doesn’t get much better. The mac n’ cheese was definitely not the best but between the meat, beans, tea, bread and ice cream I’m sold. This will now be our go-to BBQ joint.

Stopped in for lunch today and had sliced beef plate. Meat was tender and had great flavor. Best brisket that I have eaten anywhere in Denton. Smoked beans were great. They have a real wood pit behind the restaurant so none of that electrical smoked meat. First trip I approve and will be back soon.

If you know Denton or are a student at UNT then you know where the Rockin’ Rodeo is, how can you not? Well The Old House BBQ, is a couple doors down to the left. I don’t believe they have been around that long, but when me and my daughter went over there, you could smell the meats as soon as you opened the door. The place is very rustic, old wood, beat up metal and old photographs are strewn about the place with tchochkes all over the place letting you know about Texas and wild west history. As for the food, I had the lunch special for $ 5.99 which included a sandwich, one side and a drink. I went with pulled pork and mac & cheese. The latter being eaten by my almost four year old. As for the pulled pork and bbq sauce, it was pretty decent. The sauce was a little too sweet for my liking, i prefer a little more spice in mine, but over all, filling and even my daughter ate several pieces of pork. The mac & Cheese was a little runny, but it was cheesy and there was none left. You can also get a free ice cream cone before you leave(soft serve). They have plenty of meat options. Chopped Beef, Sliced Beef, Pulled Pork, Ham, Turkey Breast, Jalapeño Sausage, Regular Sausage, Chicken Breast and many more sides included beans, green beans and cheesy mashed potatoes. Prices are inexpensive and I will venture back there to try something else soon. Enjoy

Blah. Wen’t there for the $ 2 sandwich as advertised, but they said it was not the day for that special. They didn’t write any days on the sign. Food sucked.
