Cool spot Gallery, Design studio, Artist Shelter, and Nudist friendly! Got Down to Andenken for the«Date Farmers» show and was thoroughly impressed. We were not able to arrive untill about 12:30 am so I was a bit worried on the journey down from Boulder that we would miss the opening. We were assured that they would still be open and of course as promised the doors were wide open. It was great! A large bay door led us into the artists work/play area, that included what seemed to be modular living/studios. A very interesting concept.(Where’s Mine?)This large space had murals on the walls by some recognizable Denver artists. But As of yet no work by the«Date Farmers». We walked around the bend to find a small counter where the folks of Andenken were sharing some of there favorite beverages and indulging in a bit of Table Tennis. Still no «Date Farmers» but good fun. Another door through which we could see bright light and more people was still ahead. Ahh yes the Gallery and of course works from the«Date Farmers»! Apperently we had gone in the back. A spectacular thought provoking show. The gallery although small is very well lit and comfortable. Perfect! the open studios were a great addition to the actual show. I highly recommend this gallery for anyone who is into up and coming local and national artists. This place is hot hot hot. If you find your nose in «Beautiful Decay», «Juxtapoze» and or «Arkitip» this is the place for you to go. Never mind«Sante Fe»(Kidding of course) get to north Denver Oh as for the Nudist friendly We were on our way out speaking to Carlos(of the date farmers) I believe and a couple of folks on fixes ride by wearing nothing but there birthday suits. Seeing the commotion at the gallery they decided to turn around. They locked there bikes up and the three of them(one lady and two gentleman) strolled right in. Ha what a site!

Tom Horne did a really good job here for the DNC. The complete upheaval of the empty, abandoned warehouse next door into professional installations of custom artwork hanging in a room bursting with light was awe inspiring. I can’t put down any place that offers me an opportunity to hang out and shoot the shit with Shepard Fairey. Mark Mothersbaugh, Takashi Murakami, Scot Lefavor, Alex Pardee, Josh Holland, Koralie, Aiko, and Mike Moore are just some of the artists who have had their art shown or sold here. The warehouse part of this gallery looks very unconventional, with art painted high on the walls around the garage and a small room on the left operates as the shop that carries the KidRobot FatCap series in glass cases(yes!). Next to that sits a white-walled room that takes on a more conventional gallery aesthetic. So if you like street art, bright colors, maybe some nights you get down on Barcelonian Montanas and Aliens and get your hands dirty with some homemade wheat paste and stuff you blew up at Kinko’s you should pop your head up at Andenken Gallery. If you get a chance to e-mail founder Hyland Mather and tell him he’s awesome you should do that too. He doesn’t live here anymore but the dude is sweet and will try and help you out from his post in Amsterdam any way possible. Four stars for the direction, art, choice of artists, and their support of the counter culture. Can’t give this place a complete 5 stars because the showings I’ve been to consisted of dirty looks from pretentious people and not the vibe of collectivity from street kids or modern artists at all. The only other thing with shows at Andenken is it always leaves you wondering if there could be more in the presentation. I went to the Rich Jacobs skate zine show last year titled There Is Xerox On the Insides of Your Eyelids and it had me thinking, «this is great but is this it?». Last time I went was sometime in February, I wore electric blue stilettos and a silver bag and some Mean Girls hippie version bitch in wool shoes and an armful of hemp bracelets gave me the dirtest look from ground up like I was crazy. I can never be good enough for the hippies around here but what can you do. Cry tears of nag champa scented blood.

The Andenken Gallery is by far one of the most progressive art spaces in Denver. True, this is not incredibly hard to achieve in a city where the opening night of many galleries feature stale water-color-renderings of potted flowers and cacti or other mundane south-western landscapes. Still, the Andenken Gallery alternately features artwork from up-and-coming artists or promotes the work of Denver’s finest prog-art scene. One of the galleries strongest exhibits was 2005’s «Canceled Flight: 101 Tried and True Pigeon Killin’ Methods,» featuring the depiction of 101 gruesome pigeon deaths by street artists across the nation.( ) Lending to the the prowess of the Andenken, the exhibit was only featured in L.A., San Francisco, NYC, and Denver. The gallery also features a dozen or so studios as living space for artists in residence, lending to the magnetism and artistic spirit of the space. The gallery features one of the best opening nights during First Friday, Denver’s monthly art-walk. During the opening there will generally be a DJ spinning, free booze, and some of the best fashion stylings of young Denver.
