I like the vibe and convenience(if you’re in the m@dison building), but the coffee was really sub par. I’ve had better coffee at hotels before. The latte was really watery and gross.

Super great barista! Clean building. Modern design. They even make a caramel macchiato the RIGHT way.

We desperately need more coffee places downtown and this one is well located to serve the growing GCP residential neighborhood. Two major problems — they don’t open at 7 a.m. as they claim in their hours. I and others have frequently been milling about at 7 waiting to grab a cup of coffee before work and they are nowhere to be seen. Second problem, service. If you just want a cup of coffee and there is a line of ANY length, plan on a good long wait — you have to first wait on all the nutella lattes and whatever else to be made first.

I go here everyday. I work in the same building. It’s meh. The environment is very modern. It just doesn’t have the coffee house feel. The coffee is generic minus the Nutella Latte.

They’ve moved to the M@dison building but they’ve still got it! The nutella latte, that is! That and their other tasty drinks will have me returning time and time again. It’s still in the lobby of a building but at least this one seems like a better fit than the last location? I hope that some day they can get their own space but perhaps they like the hustle and bustle of all the folks in and out of there. Who knows! I’m just glad they’re still around filling me up with hazelnut deliciousness!

I’m ashamed to admit that even though I live within walking distance of Chez Zara, my first visit was on Thanksgiving Day. My mom and I stopped by before heading to the Thanksgiving Day parade. First, props to Chez Zara for being open on the holiday. And second, the Nutella latte was as delicious as I’ve heard. My mom was skeptical about the Nutella latte(she claims to «not like» Nutella – what is *wrong* with her? I may not actually be her daughter :-)). But I convinced her to try it once we got to the parade and even she had to admit it was delicious. It’s really rich, so not something I could indulge in on a regular basis, but hey, if you can’t treat yourself on Thanksgiving, when can you? Some of the reviews are outdated, because they are now located at the M@dison building and they do have seating. In fact, if the government actually let me take my work computer out of my apartment(darn«protected information»), I’d be hanging out here on a regular basis. There was a bit of a wait, which I expected both because it was Thanksgiving Day and because they prepare their coffee pour-over style, which takes longer than the prep at chain coffee shops. It was worth it!

Small spot in the Madison Bldg. Great location for all the techies to get their caffiene and fancy drinks in the morning. I love that they open at 7:00 am. It is so hard to find an EARLY coffee shop downtown Detroit. But this one was there when I needed it *sniff*. I work around the corner, so the location and timing was perfect. I got a latte with coconut, but next time, I will try the Nutella one. Yumm. I didn’t see food displayed, but I saw a blueberry muffin on top of a rubbermaid container that looked like it held more. I ordered it and it hit the spot. I was in and out in no time. Chez Zara came through in a clutch! …and for that… I’ll be back.

This is an amazing coffee shop located in the M@dison building in downtown Detroit. Some of the reviews are out dated because they opened a coffee shop that has indoor seating located at 1555 Broadway. Some of their signature drinks are the Nutella latte and Mexican hot chocolate. This is a really cool place that has the best coffee in Detroit.

First of all, this is not a café shop. I repeat, not a CAFESHOP. I’m frustrated with their misleading website because it doesn’t say that they are just a tiny stand in Chase Tower. The building by the way is very ugly and boring. So, that’s mean you can’t really hangout there. This place technically is only for take-out coffee. Also, that means they don’t have mugs. A place where you can’t order your coffee in a mug, is not a café shop. They use Great Lakes beans which is fine local micro-roaster. I tried Great Lakes before somewhere else and it was good. However, Chez Zara’s coffee didn’t taste alright. Although I’m very disappointed with their coffee, I’m planning to come back again for their Nutella Latte. Ambience and location highly and negatively affected my first impression of this place.

I’m thrilled to have this place near my office. The coffee is pretty good, if a little too hot. Haven’t had the espresso, and I like my Nutella in solid form, not in drinks, thank you. But, I’m happy they have Avalon pastries.

great espresso drinks, great service. Ignore the temporary construction. Popped in today for the first time, despite the off-putting construction going on all around the café. Friendly greetings followed by fast service. An iced mocha perfectly prepared and tasting wonderful. A little pricey compared to most of the competition(I couldn’t make this place my regular coffee hole), but it was a remarkably delicious and refreshing drink in all that heat today. I recommend stopping in and bringing your cup down to the outdoor seating in Campus Martius(esp. since there are only two tables and they’re positioned right beside — and under! — all the construction… laptoppers bring your hard-hats). Also, they give out digital coupons for free coffee when you check-in on your phone’s Unilocal app, which i’d never heard of before. Those of you without fancy phone capabilities or a Unilocal app can suck it!

Talk about a place that will surprise you multiple times! I love independent coffee shops and I’m always looking for new ones so I was excited when I heard about chez zara! But I was shocked when I got there. Essentially chez zara is a coffee shop in the middle of a construction site. Immediately my expectations shot down… It wasn’t that the coffee stand didn’t look good itself, it was actually really nice, but the rest of the building was a work zone! But enough about aesthetics and on to coffee. First off the menu has more than one thing that jumped off at me right away! The nutella late, dirty chai, Mexican hot chocolate, and etc… Making a choice was was honestly hard but in the end I decided on the nutella late. This thing actually has a spoonful of nutella in it! I found it to be quite fantastic! They also had a good selection of baked goods and I would highly recommend the salted chocolate chip cookie! I anxiously await my next trip to chez zara as it has become my go to coffee shop in Detroit!

Excellent Coffee! Yes, sometimes we get things confused with what really counts in a boutique coffee shop and this is where Chez Zara really shines. The other day I had the best cup of coffee I’ve had in the U.S. and on further questioning, I found out that it was imported coffee from Italy and they had another brew imported from Brazil. I know, lots of coffee is imported but this is GOOD imported coffee! I take my coffee black with a shot of espresso and with coffee this great, you’ll be thinking of doing the same. I’ve heard from friends that the Nutella latte is the best thing since… well, I guess a really good flavored espresso drink. =) Really, though, I’ve heard it’s great. Chez Zara has a great little location a block from Campus Martius on Woodward and Gratiot. The building is in a constant state of change on the inside but Chez Zara keeps everything going there. The staff is extremely helpful and friendly, which makes for a great visit when you get there. Definitely worth trying out and prices are on par with any coffee shop but you actually get good coffee here! The only problem I have with them is that they close at 5:00 so it’s not good for the late night coffee.

Let me tell you some things about me, so that you know whether or not we’re the same kind of people. 1. For sanity’s sake, I’ve been forced to cap my weekly coffee shop budget at $ 40. Not my coffee intake, just my coffee shop intake. 2. I drink espresso like an Italian. Not like a 12-year old girl. Now that you’ve determined whether or not you can trust me, here’s my opinion: Chez Zara’s coffee is better than anywhere else I’ve been in Detroit city. Hands down. I don’t know what happens out in the ‘burbs, but in the city, this is what’s up. I can’t tell you about nutella lattes, or cherry vanilla mochas, or whatever else goes on with other folks. But I can tell you about a triple shot and steamed milk. Hella good.

This little place with only a couple of tables hands down makes the best espresso-based coffee in the city, especially with their incredible nutella latte in their repertoire. Having the Bugati of espresso makers certainly helps! Combine this with the friendliest service, and you have a winner! If you are looking a place to hang out, go elsewhere; but if you are a true espresso coffee lover, it’s worth going out of your way to get it here.

Great coffee, friendly service, great price! Coming from San Francisco I was looking for good coffee and espresso drinks and was happy to find Chez Zara. They do a nice job with the lavazza espresso, though the cappuccinos are a little heavy on milk.

Chez Zara is a breath of fresh air in the downtown scene here. The international owner, having been raised in France, gone to school in Ann Arbor, then worked in Shanghai is continuing the trend of smart creatives itching to revive Detroit. I’m sitting out here on their first day being open and it’s beautiful out. They have some nice little outdoor bistro tables and chairs. Chez Zara serves Lavazza espresso and it’s superb. In preparation for my trip to Rome in couple weeks, I asked the owner what I should drink. He suggested a doppio con panna. Done and done. He’s looking to sell some bomb sandwiches and possibly some Supinos slices soon. The barista is also a major headturner so watch your back Miss Michigan…
