Sadly Steak Hut is closed. Some hipster spot is going in. So long working class diner… hello«New Detroit».

Ate here for many years but it is now CLOSED. Phone disconnected and a stack of old metrotimes sitting in front. Bought up for possible reopening I hope. update: they are repainting the exterior and working on the parking lot.

WTF!!! This place is closed and looked like it had been closed for months. I just tried to go there in July 2013. Wasn’t in a great neighborhood but no one who wrote reviews bothered to mention that. The review from 5/13…that place couldn’t have gone downhill that fast since May. Disappointing. Unilocal… you need to monitor.

If I was reviewing strictly for breakfast I’d give it 5 stars. If I was reviewing strictly for weird-old-time vibes, again – 5 stars. If I was reviewing for lunch…3, maybe 2 stars. It equals out to 4 stars. This is one of my favorite places to go. Breakfast is super,(SUPER) cheap, Read other reviews about that. The atmosphere is nostalgic. The Steak Hut claims to be Detroit’s oldest café. I don’t know about that… but it looks the part. The owners are nice. It’s been said. Come here just for the ancient vibes it puts off. A few movies seem to know what I’m talking about as they’ve been filmed here. It’s just a really old, odd place. And the breakfast is cheap as hell and pretty damned good.

Unfortunately the place got robbed and some of the old memorabilia of Detroit in its glory days are gone, bringing it down a star.

Greasy spoon? Yup. Friendly owners? Yup. Coffee cup empty? Never. Good cheap breakfast? You bet. I ordered the breakfast special, eggs, pot, toast, and 3 meats for $ 4.95. Spot on eggs were perfect and as Pamela said non-greasy hash browns with some nice crispy onions. mmmm mmm. I’m glad I finally stopped in and will no longer be a stranger here.

First of all let me say that my 5-star rating doesn’t mean Steak Hut is one of the best places I’ve ever been to, it means that it does what it’s trying to do REALLY well. I loved this place. I went on a Sunday and the live music was just awesome. Folky and happy and lively. I got a $ 3.95 breakfast with 1 egg, bacon(perfectly cooked), hash browns and toast. The prices are really great. Our waitress was an older woman who was very nice and prompt and always had a great big smile on her face. I really enjoyed my quick meal here. I’ve been having trouble finding good places to go to breakfast on Sunday since I moved to the city(it seems like nothing is open on Sunday!), but now I know I can count on Steak Hut. It 100% lived up to my expectations after reading the reviews on Unilocal

2−2−2 Quite possibly the best deal in Detroit… it cannot be beat. Seriously. And Gus, the owner, is the sweetest guy ever — he always checks to be sure you’ve enjoyed your meal. The Sunday live music act is generally worth checking out. Enjoy!

The Steak Hut is like walking into a restaurant you’ve seen on TV that you didn’t know existed in real life. Great old school diner — complete with«Annie and Gus» the owners. The hubs ordered the«Detroit Omelette» which was bacon, sausage, green pepper, onion and cheese. I had the basic scrambled eggs, bacon hash browns and toast. The food was great! Hash browns buttery and crisp, but not greasy. The eggs cooked perfectly and the bacon was crisp, cooked perfectly and fresh. Coffee refills were perpetual, like every 5 minutes or so she would swing by. GREAT old pictures of Detroit’s industrial glory on the wall. Very cool place, I recommend it to all. PLUS, it’s DIRT cheap! Do it.

Standard breakfast fare on the cheap! I appreciated the non-greasy potatoes(tried it off my friend’s plate), and the bacon looked extra crispy — the way I like it! Me? I had a corned beef hash, which was really good. Gus came by and chatted with us for a bit, which was fun. A great breakfast find in Detroit!

My friend Pam randomly found this place on Unilocal and we decided to check it out. I was skeptical at first because of the old, somewhat scary exterior(at least for the the San Franciscan that I am), and the interior was not glorious either. But the 4.5 star rating intrigued me, as did the $ 2.95 breakfast sign in front of the door. I was pleasantly surprised by the nice service and even more so by the quality of the food. Bacon was perfectly cooked and the potatoes were amazing! It was also cheap as Hell compared to anything you can get in SF. For sure, the coffee was not that great but it was far from the worst I’ve had during my stay in Detroit! Very nice touch: the cook(owner?) came to our table to ask how the food was and exchange a few words. The only time this happened to me was at Chapeau, a fancy French restaurant here in SF!

On my last weekend of living in Detroit so friends took me out to brunch on a Sunday morning at the Steak Hut. My only question was how did I not hear about this place sooner. I mean come on the oldest diner in Detroit! Plus, it was super close to my house in Corktown. I got the Hippy Dippy Hash which was good with eggs. My table split an order of blue berry scones, which was the perfect compliment to our coffee. They even had a girl playing guitar. Which was funny when she said she didn’t get to sleep until 4 am that night. This place is the perfect hole in the wall. Can’t wait to go again when I come back to visit the D!

Diner: small, old, duct-taped seats, guy in corner nursing coffee, union boss at the counter reading the paper. This place is straight out of the Norman Rockwell painting. Diner breakfast served by Gus, the Greek owner. I asked for eggs over easy… they were(not over medium). Bacon crispy? Check. Real homemade french toast? Done. Service with a smile and a check-in by the owner(and chef, and celebrity, and _____)? Of course! … and Gus doesn’t even know he’s famous on the internet. How cool is that! Tell him hello. I don’t care if my hotel gives me free breakfast, I have to be back.

I was hungry for eggs, bacon, home fries and toast this morning so off I went riding to Steak Hut Restaurant in Detroit. The ride, about 30 mins from my place. I pass many many restaurants where I could get breakfast, but my mind was on the great breakfast and great service I get at Steak Hut. As soon as I walked in, Gus(owner) told me good morning and within a few mins the waitress came with coffee and the morning newspaper for me to read. VERYNICE touch to bring the morning newspaper! We’ve all eaten at many restaurants for breakfast BUT when was the last time the server brought you the morning newspaper?!? This was the FIRST for me. As always the breakfast was perfect, service great and she kept coming back to refill my coffee cup. I still need to try the french toast as I mentioned in my last review and to try the fried chicken too. Fried chicken is one of my favorite meals for later in the day. As I left, I told Gus good bye and he thanked me for coming back to his restaurant. Needless to say, I will be back again. This is ASGOODAS A DINERGETS. What more can you ask for in life than: Perfect over easy eggs. Decent hashbrowns. Staple, fresh, cheap diner coffee. Buttered toast and jam. Duct taped vinyl seats. Men reading the newspaper at the peak of morning over steaming hot coffee. A red haired waitress with a local friendliness. Oh yeah… and did I mention that my meal was THREE dollars? Holy christ in a handbasket. I’ll be back.

Wonky hours, pretty good food(super cheap), excellent atmosphere. I’d seen this divey-looking place numerous times on my way to Le Petit Zinc creperie(just a street north of Steak Hut), but it took me a few tries to actually catch this place open — basically, while the posted hours seem more liberal, I’d say if you show up between 8am and 12:30pm any day of the week, it SHOULD be serving up delicious diner-style breakfasts and lunches. Before 8 or after 12:30, you’re taking your chances with it being closed. The space is small, but charming. The wall along the front entrance is full of poster-boards covered with happy-customer photos. Spend a few minutes going through them and you’re bound to spot someone you know, have met, or have seen at least once somewhere else in Detroit. Another great thing about the interior, is that they have one booth that seats exactly THREE… a comfy two-seater across the table from a comfy one-seater… for my party of three this morning, it was perfect. We did breakfast, which is a steal of a deal. $ 2 – 5 dollars for most breakfast plates. My friends had omelets while I did pancakes, eggs, and bacon. We also shared a french toast, since it was being recommended by the other Unilocal reviews. I also spotted some delicious looking scones sitting behind the register, which weren’t listed on the menu. The cranberry, chocolate chip scone was incredible. Best scone I’ve had in a long long time(might it be the ONLY scone in the city? let me know.) The breakfast was pretty good. Bacon was crispy and salty, the eggs tasty. The pancakes were a little too dry and, actually, salty! not bad but not great. The french toast was as good as reported, VERY good style. They serve margarine instead of butter, for what that’s worth. Coffee was fresh and full of flavor — and the refills were being offered every 7 – 9 minutes. Service at Steak Hut is truly exemplary. The bonus of showing up on a Sunday is the live music. I didn’t catch the band name, but the quartet was playing music that ranged from country blues to gypsy — lyrics of sharp wit and a heavy dose of kazoo to boot. The mixed-ages crowd was soaking it all up, and the applause was boisterous. Great times and good eats at the Steak Hut.
