Heading down from Bend we found a great little spot right on the short main street. Simple small town bakery/diner. Delicious philly steak sandwiches and best of all authentic warm potatoe salad. Apple bundt cake also look great but too many calories for me. Friendly owner whose enjoyment of his customers shows through.

Just Around the Bend Dorris, CA, is a border town 3 miles from the Oregon state line. Part Café, part Gallery, A Slice of Heaven café is easily passed by as it’s located just around a 90 degree bend on CA Hwy 97’s northbound trek or, just before the corner if heading southbound. And it’s nested in the middle of two buildings, one of them, out of business. If you miss it, then it’s your loss in my opinion. A gathering place for the locals as well as visitors, Heaven is worth supporting if just for a cup of coffee before the long southbound stretch towards Weed, CA. However, I encourage you to stay for a meal. They offer breakfast through dinner menu items and have baked items as well. Regarding the art and history displays, some are for sale, and some for display only so, PLEASEDON’T TOUCHTHEGIRAFF. Not that I know from experience of course. I’m just saying that kids are more than welcome, but there’s some breakables here and there. I visited for lunch and ordered something not on the menu which they didn’t mind making in the least. That’s impressive for a small place and an element of customer service I don’t get that often now-a-days. I will definitely be back. Not just for the food, but to eavesdrop on the latest news from the locals. Heaven, is definitely a Slice of Americana as well.

Stopped here on a roadtrip. Their burger and fries were good — my friend had no complaints about her sandwich, either. We were a little disappointed because we had wanted to order off their breakfast menu but were told that because they were grilling burger/lunch sandwich meat for lunch, they couldn’t do pancakes or french toast, but we could order any bfast items that didn’t require a grill/griddle? I found that odd but regardless, the good we did have was just splendid and it wasn’t like we were expecting anything grandiose anyhow! You won’t be able to miss the enormous taxidermied giraffe. Ask about it! His name is George and we received the full story(including where his legs and tail are) about him, and it really made a good«road trip diner stop» story :)

This place will make you ill if you love animals. The owners, Steve Erickson & Virginia Smith, like to go on safari in Africa and kill animals. The giraffe they killed a few years back is stuffed & proudly on display inside the café. The food & service are mediocre and the décor is sickening.

Stopped at this place since it had such good Unilocal reviews and free wifi was a perk. Half of the menu wasn’t available due to a missed truck delivery, and the selection is far from vegetarian friendly. I ordered a hot chocolate that never came(which they did apologize for as I was leaving), and my friend had to play the, «well what do you have?» game. The staff spent most of their time out back smoking, and the pastry case was far from appealing looking. I was hoping for at least something interesting to drink, but all they had was the run of the mill beverages. At least it was clean.

Yummy breakfast! Biscuits and gravy were the bomb and my eggs were cooked perfectly. My dad had the Denver omelette, which, he said was really good; his hash browns were also super tasty. To top it off the prices were beyond reasonable and our server/cook was super nice!

The hamlet of Dorris had changes in restaurants, some gone and some new since my last visit. One of the latter that is gaining fans is A Slice of Heaven Café-Bakery. The Philly Cheese sandwich is very good with the filing overflowing the bun: lots of lightly sautéd bell peppers and onions covered in thick melted cheese with thin slices of roast beef(from a lunch meat package?) mixed in. The bun was nicely toasted. I also liked the warm German potato salad, one of the options for the side dish accompanying the sandwich. There were few pastries left and the deli section of precooked corn dogs, fried chicken and french fries were quickly snapped up by a herd of high schools students just after 12:30. They also went for the Cascade Glacier ice cream shakes. Located in an old building the café is long and narrow with the walls hung with western scenes and memorabilia.

We stopped for breakfast. The host and cook were very friendly and obliging to our vegetarian requests, but the service was very slow; we waited about 30 minutes for our food. The cook did a nice job adding bell peppers and onions to the hash browns for us, which was good. The veggie omelets were very tasty with onion, peppers, mushrooms, chopped tomato, and cheese. We were given a basket of jams, which was later taken from us and given to another guest. They need to buy a few more baskets. My half order of pancakes was two large plate-sized cakes, which I shared with everyone and still had some left over. When we asked for more of the yummy warm maple syrup, we got something totally different and definitely not yummy. An interesting item was the taxidermied giraffe in the entry – «George», I believe – which a town-member had shot on a safari. It’s being stored at the restaurant until the owner has a bigger house.

Yummy bakery, charming hosts, funky décor. Pleasant and clean place to take a break while driving to and from Oregon. And be sure to stop for a gander at the tallest flag pole east of the Mississippi!

I had the chicken wrap which was OK. The side of potato salad was unique and definitely worth a try as long as you don’t have any type of a heart condition. Staff were friendly and attentive. If you’re in Dorris and hungry, its worth stopping by.

We stopped here for breakfast on the way up up Oregon. And damn glad we did. Good coffee, friendly service, a good selection of hot sauces for the hash browns, free wifi — what’s not to like? The stuffed french toast is good. For dessert, we split a small german hot potato salad, and it is excellent. A lovely find in the middle of nowhere — you will not be disappointed.

Great food! We split an absolutely huge club sandwich. Triple thick. Fries were also excellent. The guys running the spot were friendly and prompt. Carpet needs a couple of passes with a cleaner.

Big sis and I stopped in on our drive up to Portland from SF. The stretch between Weed and Klamath doesn’t offer many options for a quick bite so we Unilocaled to see what was nearby. We would’ve missed it if we didn’t resort to Unilocal but so glad we went in. The two guys were super friendly and one of them actually went to my grad school in SF. We had savory warm German potato salad, a philly cheesesteak, and meatball marinara sandwich. Everything was toasted, gooey, and tasted as good as any 5 star big city sandwich. Definitely stop in to have lunch and say hello to the guys.

Come here all the time for both the food and the service. Mike and Andy are both personable with great senses of humor… not to mention making great food! My wife loves the Monte Cristo, I like to come for the chef salad and wraps. The hot german pototo salad is off the hook and one day I will try their«man of the Mountain» food challenge again(got through half of it the first time).

The best fresh ingredients. Great sandwiches and soup. Clam Chowder is great. Their hot german potato salad is out of this world. Great sweets too. Try their red velvet cake with buttercream it’s the best and my favorite. Awsome atmosphere and the owners are very personable/friendly.
