H Salt Fish & Chips

It’s a shame I’ve never tried this place even though it’s been there for as long as I can remember. I love fish and chips so I got exactly that.
The fries, on a scale of 1 being completely soggy and 10 being completely crunchy/​crispy, were a 3. So they were on the soggy side. A good French fry stands up on its own when you hold it up but these French fries were sad and limp. The «chips» portion of their fish and chips need help.
Otherwise I can’t complain about their fish. It was cooked perfectly, not too underdone or too overdone. The breading was crisp and didn’t fall off after the first bite. Seasoning wasn’t too salty or too bland.
If I’m craving fish and chips I’d get their fish and chips without the chips (see paragraph 2). So they might as well be called H Salt Fish.

At first I was a little skeptical about how good their fish and chips were but once I actually tried it, I fell in love with the flavor. Great crunch and perfect with tartar sauce. Service is also very polite and the order doesn’t take very long. Only issue I have is that their sauces seem a bit cheap and that they are cash only.

Fantastic Fish & Chips.. . couldn’t ask for better. They serve Peps instead of Coke, but the management said we can bring whatever we want to drink the next time we visit. The place is clean and has an «A» rating. Highly recommended.

Excellent meal — I had the Seafood Combo, which is supposed to come only with fish, shrimp and scallops, but he always throws in some clams and calamari, too, making it a real «combo» dish. The food is always fried perfectly — completely cooked inside, but not over cooked until it is rubbery. My SO likes the food here too, but he can’t digest deep fried food any more. I feel bad for him that he can’t eat this!
The same guy always serves us whenever we go there — I don’t know if he is an employee or the owner — but he is always pleasant to deal with. And we have noticed that whenever there are no customers in the shop, he is cleaning the floors, tables, counters. The place is very clean. Will definitely keep coming here when I’m dying for deep fried seafood.

Fried fish and chips is what this place does that I like so much. The other seafood is fantastic as well. But, When I am jonesing for old fashioned fish and chips, no one does as good as this place.
You will have a hard time finding a cleaner establishment to eat at in Los Angeles. The owner is often the guy cleaning and/​or cooking. His concern for his business shows and is evident everywhere.
Please know that there’s no valet parking, reservations, plush seating, violins or table service. If you want Sirachi, Tapatio or Wasabi you’ll have to bring your own.

Came here with my brother today, and got the 2 piece fish and chips, and it was delicious. It filled me up, without feeling too bloated, and it was inexpensive
Got the combo for $ 5.43. Which isn’t bad at all! We got to go, because we prefer eating in the comfort of our own home

By the way this place looks authentic British. There were posters on the wall of the UK, if only the people there spoke British, then this place would have been like walking into a pub in London

The H Salt Fish in Norwalk & Bellflower closed. We were looking for establishment we could frequent during the lenten season. Clean! They were right on! The service was quick. The use headsets to communicate. Fish was delicious! Medium Shrimp were also tasty. They were generous with the vinegar. We will be back.

Called for take out today… not accepting call in orders.
Drove from Norwalk and was informed since its Lent Friday they are expecting a large dinner crowd and this is the only day they don’t take call in orders.
This owner knows his customer base. They were re-​organized and ready to be busy for the dinner crowd.
Food is prepared very well and very good customer service.

This place is great! The food is always hot and fresh. The guy working at the counter is super friendly and always very helpful. I like how he always remembers me and my order when I come here. :)

Been coming here since the 80s. Place is clean I will say this. Fish is not oily. The owner works most of the days, He is nice and friendly. Be advised ‘CASH ONLY’ the portions are big and plentiful. a 2 piece is more then enough.

Hit the spot! Reminds me of the old school H. Salt I remember as a child. Place was super clean, Service friendly and efficient! I had a shrimp/​fish combo, my daughter had a combo that she couldn’t finish (brought it home from a later snack).

Restaurant is clean, customer service is friendly.
The real star of the show is the food. I ordered the 3 fish combo with hushpuppies on the side. The fish was large pieces cooked to crispy perfection. I added the hushpuppies to my order late. Even with the hushpuppies added my food was ready quickly.
The hushpuppies are the best.

I would just like to say I LOVE YOU H SALT!!! You are my absolute favorite place in the world!!! I don’t get to eat there as much I’d like to because my girlfriend hates seafood but I get my penny saver coupons and sneak over there as often as I can! Its funny its supposed to be the smell of perfume a man gets in trouble coming home smelling like in my case its H SALTS lol! I LOVE YOU GUYS THANK YOU FOR YEARS OF SERVICE!!!

Ok the fish was great! But this place has rules! They do not take phone orders and you have to line up a specific way. Pretty intense. When I walked in it was dirty and smelled nasty. In the end the fish was probably the best fish fry I have had in a long time. I am only giving it three stars because there is no way I would ever eat there this is strictly a to-​go place.

The most underwhelming, frozen then fried, bland shitty food. I don’t know what these other Unilocalers are raving about. I would have been better off going to a fast food restaurant (which this place pretty much is). Worst fish and chips ever.

Very delicious! I usually go to the one in Hollywood near Vermont but this one is better. The menu has more items and I wanted to try all of them! Lol
The seafood combo is delicious! I recommend you try it. The sauces are self serve on your plate and there’s no extra charge for more. I will be back to try the rest of the menu!

I’ve lived in Downey for 15 years, but I’ve never thought to try this place! There was a coupon in the paper, so I thought I’d check it out.
It’s easy to miss H Salt, as it’s in an unassuming location in a unfrequented strip mall. The storefront is kind of cute and old-​fashioned, and I was a little disappointed by the no nonsense interior. The owner hung up a few maps from European countries on the walls, but overall it’s very bare. There is a pinball machine in the corner, if you need some entertainment while you wait.
The owner was very nice, and started on my order (basic 2 pc fish and chips, with coleslaw) right away. When I first Unilocaled this place, it was three dollar signs. Seriously, it is not expensive at all. My food cost $ 5.22, so I’m happy. My order came out quickly (~5 min), and I was given tartar sauce, vinegar, and ketchup.
Fish: Delicious, crispy batter that does not overwhelm the fish. The fish was flaky and juicy!
Chips: Just average fries, nothing special.
Cole Slaw: Refreshing way to end a meal consisting of entirely fried things, but also average.
A decent meal if you’re craving, but I wouldn’t go out of my way to come here. Good thing it’s close!

My sister was craving some fish and chips so she found H Salt on Unilocal.It was pretty close to work so I decided to stop by and order some to go. H Salt is located near the post office on Lakewood and Florence. It’s really easy to miss the first time so keep a lookout.
When I walked in, I noticed how cheap the prices were. I got the 4 piece fish and chip combo while I got the ½ lb mini fired shrimp for myself. The guy behind the counter made sure I had the necessary condiments to go with our respective dishes. Note: the fries came out of a bag of frozen french fries.
The fish and chips were probably the best I’ve ever had. So nice and crunchy. I really enjoyed my ½lb of shrimp. Delicious.
H Salt is definitely on my go to places whenever I’m in Downey.

I have finally found the best fish and chips I’ve ever had. I’ve been searching everywhere for really good and authentic fish and chips. These beauties were fried perfectly and the fish fillets were incredibly moist and fresh. The batter was light but had a nice crunch to it. Their homemade tartar sauce was just tasty and didn’t taste like it was from a bottle. I tip my hat to you guys.

I grew up eating H. Salt and it still is one of my comfort foods whenever I’m home. I am a huge fan of the fish & chips. The batter is so light and the fish is fried perfectly. The fried zucchini is awesome and they have plenty of other options if you don’t like fish.
The owner is a REALLY nice guy and the pinball machine is always fun to play while waiting for your order!
Service is fairly quick, but if you’re rushing just phone in your order.
FYI, this place gets packed during the Lenten season!
