So, in the Great Wedding Planning, I put The Husband in charge of The Cake. He wanted something to do, and I figured he could manage this. Now, we live in Baltimore, and were getting married in DC. But when he told me one Saturday afternoon that we were driving nearly two hours to ASHBURN, VIRGINIA to taste cakes, I began to seriously question the wisdom of putting The Husband in charge of anything at all. Well, two hours later, I felt much better about that choice. Joy was fantastic. She was friendly and interested in our ideas, and — best of all — WONDERFULLY straightforward. As we talked through our ideas, she sketched, helping us to get a more concrete idea of what we were envisioning. She helped us weigh our ideas against our budget(Cascades of icing roses? Joy: «Roses will cost X each.» Me: «No roses!»), until we all hit upon a design that felt unique and completely us. The cake samples she provided at that consult were delicious. There wasn’t a particular menu to choose from, as Joy said she could make just about any sort of cake we wanted. Instead, she showed up with some samples from the cakes she was currently making. We made our choices, went home, and a couple of weeks later received a proposal and contract. We signed, returned, and were done. And here’s the best part: No flubs. No last-minute calls. No back-and-forths. I received an e-mail about a week before the wedding asking for details of the reception venue. Then the day of the wedding, there was the cake. In place. On time. Looking just like the sketch in the contract. And tasting just as good as those samples we tasted back in Ashburn. And everyone at the reception commenting on how they’d never seen a cake like it before, and that it was TOTALLYUS. I can’t recommend Joy highly enough. She was easy to work with, utterly professional, and made an outstanding cake for our wedding.
