Durango, Colorado Very Good home cooking restaurant. Great service, by the proprietor I suspect. We had the fried chicken… excellent. Really a very good batter system. Mac & cheese… very good. Seems most places have trouble with this dish but not here. Chicken sandwich, salad, breaded okra again excellent. The salad could use a little more chicken but otherwise great. Also had the banana puddin and strawberry pie. Both pretty good.

Go here! Visiting from San Francisco, thought I’d try something different than the traditional New Mexican cuisine and boy, was it a great choice! I ordered the catfish, sweet potato hush puppies, molasses sweet tea and banana pudding — well priced, great service, nice outdoor patio, family feel and I want to go back again today! Highly recommend, nice for kids too.

I’m so glad I had the opportunity to have lunch at this restaurant. It’s incredibly charming, with a relaxed farmhouse feel. The drinks are served in mason jar glasses and there are fresh flowers on the tables. The food was very good. Everything is locally grown and made from scratch. A couple of other reviews mentioned that they thought it was too pricey, but I disagree. Considering the amount of work that would go into obtaining locally grown organic food and preparing each meal fresh, from scratch, I think their prices are fair.

Great food, great atmosphere, and great cocktails. And PBR tallboys, which is always a good sign. Would definitely recommend this place whenever you’re in the mood for a delicious, hearty meal in a laid back setting.

Great place just off the main drag. Service was excellent but the food was even better! We took our 10 month old the were more than accommodating. The grits and the Mac n cheese were great but the chicken was the star.

I had the fried shrimp and Mac n cheese with bacon, which were both delicious. Not a fan of the corn bread though.

Let’s be honest, just in town for the weekend with my granddaughter and needed to find something she would also eat… she actually chose Fifth Street Eatery and all I can say is… WOW!!! The fried chicken breast is boneless! And is served with a side… I recommend their homemade mashed potatoes with an amazing gravy that has a slight kick. My granddaughter ate it all, a great compliment! I had the Carolina Shrimp and White Bean Stew… WOW!!! Just WOW!!! The batter on the shrimp was light and beer-y…PERFECT. The beans were beautifully buttery and the broth… what can I say… have I said WOW yet?!! Also because I love grits I tried the Spicy Cheesy grits… glad I did!!. Now, when it seems I should be done I remembered they also served banana pudding as a dessert option… and this Southern girl LOVES her banana pudding! I am in heaven… homemade vanilla wafers with a maple custard, large slice of banana and topped with a Chantilly whipped cream. Roll me out!!! If you are ever in Durango this is a MUST visit place to eat and the owners are very friendly!

I had the 3 piece chicken in Nashville hot, bacon mad and cheese and greens. I also tried the fried green tomatoes which was so tasty. You have to try there iced tea it was different and better then any ice tea I ever had. If you eat any where while visiting durango you have to eat here.

I’m picky about chicken. Because I hate dry chicken and I’m a pretty damn good cook. These guys NAILEDITDOWN. Juicy, organic… the batter was on point. We shared the biscuit and gravy, mac n cheese and greens. Watched the owner grind the sausage for brunch. Love supporting restaurants who support sustainable living. And amazing recipes.

What a nice surprise to find this place in Durango! Really friendly service in a homey setting. Delicious, homemade food and overall wonderful experience. I loved the mashed sweet potatoes — one of my favorites that I’ve never seen in a restaurant. I’ll definitely be back!

We now have an absolute must visit restaurant in Durango. We heard good things about 5th Street Eatery so we thought we would check it out while in town on vacation. We walk in and get seated by our waitress who is very friendly and helpful. Especially explaining that they accommodate gluten sensitive diets by coating the chicken in a cornmeal instead of the flour they typically use. They aren’t fully gluten free because the corn meal coated chicken is still fried in the same fryers as the flour coated chicken. They offer a kids meal of a chicken wing and a side but our waitress was awesome with allowing us to edit the number of pieces of chicken we ordered. So we ordered a 3 pcs and a side and added a couple of sides instead of ordering a meal for my wife and a kids meal. My wife and daughter LOVED the chicken coated in corn meal. The side my kiddo ordered was the bacon Mac n’ cheese. It was DELICIOUS! I ordered the chicken and waffles because it was a special for new years day and they fired up the waffle iron for me. Normally, chicken and waffles is just on Sunday brunch and Wednesdays but since they had it earlier in the day, they were willing to set it up for dinner too. The Chicken and waffles were amazing! I got the breast instead of the wings and thigh. What can I say, I’m a breast guy! The waffle was fluffy with the right amount of crunch. The chicken breast was phenomenal! Juicy and tender and crunchy and amazing! As stated earlier, we will visit every time we are on Durango.

To start we had a few drinks. I had this freshly sqeezed pink lemonade with vodka. For the life of me, I can’t remember the drinks name, but it was very good. I had the chicken breast meal with the mashers and gravy and it was very tasty. The breading was flavorful and the mashers and gravy were comforting. They were a great pair, considering I like to dip my chicken in potatoes and gravy. My boyfriend got the mac n cheese side with his chicken breast dinner and I was quite jealous. The bread crumbles on top gave it a nice crunch and the bacon was heavenly. One of the best baked mac n cheese dishes I’ve ever tasted. For dessert we tried the banana pudding, oh my! It was SO delicous! Creamy and very tasty with the added cookies on top.

This place is small and homey; very warm and friendly. And the foooood… AMAZING! The fried chicken is outstanding and the brussel sprouts are crazy good(and I’m not even a brussel sprout fan).

This was my first visit to this establishment and I was not disappointed. Why 4 stars? The menu selection is severely limited. I am glad they can keep plugging with their menu, though. My wife was extremely satisfied with her chicken and I was very happy with my cured ham Hill Billy sandwich with a side of mashers and gravy. Every element of my meal was extremely well crafted: the biscuit, pickles, aged cheddar, salt cured ham(and BOY was it salty), collard greens, and did I mention the biscuit already? Amazingly calculated food. I wish they had more to offer, though. The cider was delicious, however heavy on the added molasses, which became cloyingly sweet once my wife got midway through the cup. The RC cola I had was a nice change from the usual Coke offerings at restaurants, but alas it is nothing but high fructose corn syrup and caramel coloring, so it does not truly compliment the high quality ingredients and execution of the prepared food. Check this place out. They have some amazing eats.

I ate here right after their opening under the name of Yardbird. I was a little confused about the name change but it’s still the same, completely homemade southern food — like it should be served. Because it’s known for fried chicken, of course my daughter and I ordered the fried chicken; her with breast and brown butter Brussels sprouts, and I with dark meat and buttermilk mash and gravy. Oh my gosh! It’s ALL delicious! They even serve homemade pickles on the side that are very good with a tiny hint of heat. We also ordered one of their HUGE biscuits with maple butter. I only wish I had some southern white gravy to slather over it. High end home style at its best! I just found out that they make a southern breakfast brunch on Sunday’s from 10:00 — 2:00 serving sausage & gravy and chicken & biscuits. I will surely make the drive from Farmington, NM to try it.

Located a block from the Durango/Silverton train line, this place offers an excellent array of southern comfort food. My favorite dish was the deep fried sweet potato hush puppies(out of this world delish). With a tall PBR and fried chicken and waffles, I was in heaven after a long day exploring Mesa Verde. The atmosphere is homey and is an excellent place to socialize and reflect on the day. Definitely the place to go if you’re craving southern style chow. Also try the fried breaded trout. So good. Collards are not bad too.

This is a foodie fun place to grab lunch in the heart of Durango. We enjoyed molasses tea, HUGE yummy biscuits, Serrano cornbread muffins(delectable), fried chicken, smashers/gravy, smokey bacon mac, fried green tomatoes and the hillbilly ham sandwich. The chicken, potatoes and cornbread would be my three favorites! All well seasoned and perfectly cooked. The hillbilly ham sandwich did not go over well with my teenage son. He didn’t like the coleslaw that dripped all over his biscuit. Both of my teens loved the bacon mac. It was creamy and tasty without an overwhelming smokey flavor as many restaurants do their bacon mac. The fried green tomatoes had a strange flavor and were hard; not a win. Don’t forget to finish the meal with the banana pudding. We took ours to go to eat on the plane, score!

FRIEDCHICKENFTW. I was wandering around Downtown Durango and stumbled upon Yardbird by chance! I totally didn’t know it was there because it’s tucked into a small little house that is easy to miss if you aren’t paying attention. But PAYATTENTION. The chicken is delicious. My parents and I stopped by for lunch one weekend and decided to sit outside because it was a little stuffy inside. Be careful of the mud patches if you don’t want to get your shoes dirty! Our server was really nice and brought us everything we needed promptly. We ordered the fried green tomatoes, and I had the ½ and ½ chicken with a side of collard green. My dad had the trout and my mom had the 3 piece dark with a side of coleslaw. The fried green tomatoes didn’t have much flavor so they weren’t that impressive, but the sauce that accompanied them was AMAZING! It was a buttermilk based sauce that could probably make anything taste good, so I understand why they were served with the bland tomatoes. My ½ and ½ chicken was awesome! The chicken meat was moist and the skin was perfectly crispy. However the combo of chicken with collard green was too much salt. I’d recommend doing what my mom did: order the slaw with your chicken because the tartness helps balance the salt of the fried chicken. Stick to the chicken, they know what they are doing. I should have ordered the cornbread too when I was there but I totally forgot… next time!

We stopped here during our recent stay in Durango and this native Texan was very pleased. They have a great Southern flair with a twist we found surprisingly refreshing. The boneless fried chicken breast was cooked perfectly, moist and could be cut with a fork. The sweet potatoes were also a delightful side. I don’t think I have ever eaten fried chicken and somehow felt my meal was a healthy choice. The smashed fried okra was also a hit. The side of garlic lemon mayonnaise seemed unusual to us but we enjoyed the flavor. Being used to ketchup and ranch with everything, this Texas girl was happy for once these items were not available to obscure the great flavors being served up. We think this bird has something to flap about and we sure hope to visit again the next time we are in Durango!
