Wow… absolutely WOW. Adam and Scott’s reviews before me absolutely NAILED it, and I don’t have anything more enlightening to add, but just wanted to say I left Bert’s today with a fantastic(through, conscientious, good looking) haircut at a GREAT price, and had a really enjoyable time in the process. Super funny, personable, REAL– a community feeling, a fabric of the neighborhood, the way it should be, but isn’t anymore. To be enjoyed and appreciated while Dan and John keep the doors open(which hopefully will be for a very long time to come!)

Dan and John are old fashioned style barbers. They don’t just pull out the electric razor and give you a chop job. They use their scissors, and CUT your hair. They take their time, and do it right. Then, if you want, they use a straight razor and shaving cream to clean up your neckline and sideburns. Their prices are very reasonable for the level of service, so much so that I usually end up tipping the rest of a $ 20 bill(currently $ 8) just because they do such a great job. You don’t get to watch in the mirror while they are cutting your hair, which means you are turned facing the others waiting for their cut. This tends to create a conversational atmosphere, where people chat and pontificate about the latest small town happenings and what dummies all the politicians are. The ambiance in their shop is very old-school. You can go in there and tell semi-dirty jokes(or hear a few), unless there are children present in which case the conversation is VERY family-friendly. They have a tube TV which they usually have on some kind of male-oriented programming(nothing dirty), but tend to change the channel to something innocuous when kids come in. These guys are a fixture of the Edgewater/North Denver/Highlands area, and can frequently be seen around town. They always say hello because you are not just a customer to them. I haven’t seen them cut too many women’s hair, though I hear they do a good job with bobs. I do know they cut great men’s hair. They pay attention to your unique needs and the way your hair grows, and they are careful not to cut your desired style in a way that won’t work with your head. For those unaware, the shop was named after its prior owner, Bert Hogan, who was THE Edgewater barber for a million years, and a meaningful contributor to the Edgewater community through his charitable and volunteer activities, and his seeming omnipresence. Bert retired years ago and rented the shop to two guys who kept up his traditional style. He passed away recently and the community misses him.
