DMS Salon

I’ve been going to DMS Salon for almost four years now. While I could go to other salons closer to my home, Dawn is absolutely worth the 25 minute drive. The salon is welcoming I’m always offered a cup of tea or coffee and a magazine. I never feel rushed, pushed into buying anything I don’t want to buy, or like «just another client» at DMS Salon. I truly feel that Dawn cares about me — it shows in how well she takes care of me from the moment I walk in the door to the moment I leave.
I have naturally curly hair and, like most Curly Girls, I have more haircut/​style horror stories than I can count. Dawn has been absolutely amazing. She really takes her time to consult with me every time I come in before she touches my hair at all. She listens and really communicates with me throughout the entire process (cut, wash, style, dry) to make sure we’re on the same page from start to finish. My relationship with Dawn is collaborative and I am part of the process. Dawn takes advantage of opportunities to learn about curly hair regularly and always shares what she’s discovered with me — tips and tricks, all kinds of great information. I don’t want to go anywhere else, Dawn at DMS Salon is the BEST.

I looked for 6 years in Maryland for the right place to get my hair cut and finally found it! DMS is wonderful. Serena is the best! She’s low-​key, professional, and just chatty enough for a salon artist. She has fun tips and tricks, a great eye for the best new ideas and trends, and my hair always looks incredible the minute she’s done and through the weeks after the cut and style.
The salon itself is beautifully decorated, always very clean, smells nice, they have wonderful music playing and really try to create an atmosphere you can relax in and enjoy. I’ve referred so many people here by word of mouth and will continue to do so!

I absolutely LOVE my curly cut by Dawn!
I’m visiting my in-​laws in West Virginia and had to drive almost 2 hours to the salon, which I totally don’t mind after seeing the amazingness Dawn did to my hair. This was my second curly cut and the best one yet. The salon is really cute and the other staff was really friendly.
Definitely worth the drive! :)

Update: I came back to get my hair ombré’d again. This time my appointment was with Serena. I appreciate that she called me ahead of time and left a message that her client before me was running late and not to rush. She did an awesome job with my hair and took extra time to make sure the color came out right. She also recommended products for my hair, which I ended up buying and loved. (I usually hate when stylists do this because I feel like they are just pushing products, but that was not the case here. The products she recommended are ones I would buy again and I can see the results.)

I had a hair 911 today (from another salon). I went to Unilocal for recommendations in the Catonsville/​Ellicott City area and found DMS. Juliette of DMS saved the day and my hair. Long story short, I went to a different salon yesterday with a new stylist to get a color and highlights. I left with crazy white blond roots and darker everywhere else. Today, thankfully was a totally different experience. Juliette knew exactly what to do to make my hair look more beautiful than it has in a long time. She not only fixed the crazy canary yellow roots I had, but also gave me a great haircut! I left with a big smile on my face. Thanks DMS for fitting me in and thanks again Juliette for everything! Will definitely recommend to friends and will be back!

So I have curly hair and have been getting Devacurl hair cuts since 2007 but that was in San Diego and I absolutely LOVED my stylist — she was AWESOME so when I went back to Grad school in New York City I thought going to THE Devachan Salon in NYC was going to be the best experience ever and I must admit it was just an «eh» experience. Then when I moved to Baltimore a year ago I went to another salon to get my hair cut and it was a horrible experience — so much so that it took me literally a year to get my hair cut again because I was too afraid to have it cut because the stylist ignored everything I told her about my issues with haircuts… CUT (pun intended) to December 11^th when I walk into DMS Salon — wait let’s go a little further back — after finding DMS on the Devacurl website, I called to make an appointment and the person who answered the phone was so super duper nice and accommodating — she had originally given me a date in January and when she heard the disappointment in my voice for having to wait so long she looked through the book again and found me an opening because someone had canceled — one person’s cancellation is another person’s good fortune.
That is until the snow comes– so my appointment was scheduled for December 10^th but we had tremendous snow that day so I received a phone call before 9 am asking if it would be okay to reschedule for the following morning — how is that for great service??? And this is all before I have met anyone at the salon or even walked through the door. DMS realizes that the customers experience starts the moment they call to make the appointment and they make sure you feel comfortable and taken care of the entire time — so already they had bonus points in my book!
So NOW, I get to the day of my appointment and not only is the salon in the most adorable part of the state — Ellicott City but it is the cutest salon ever — the décor is super welcoming, it is like being in someone’s house and not being at an overcrowded, obnoxious salon (like others I have been to) and not only that but this salon is ORGANIC!!! Hello, my inner environmentalist was so super excited by the entire experience!
Once I arrived, Juliet, my stylist welcomed me and I must admit my only hesitation about this entire experience was although Juliet had amazing hair and super chic fashion sense — HAD STRAIGHT HAIR!!! I mean, how can a girl with straight hair do a Devacurl hair cut? The entire goal of the Devacurl hair cut is that it is for curly haired girls, never had I had a straight haired stylist before — this was going to be weird. But then she worked her magic — Juliet listened to all of my concerns (neuroses) and assessed my hair situation and for the first time since I first discovered Devacurl hair cuts in 2007, I left the hair salon smiling because I actually liked — no LOVED — the hair cut!
So quick recap — the customer service, amazing. The salon décor and ambiance, amazing. The fact that the salon is organic, amazing. The price for the service, amazing. The haircut, amazing. Juliet? FABULOUS!!!
Thank you DMS, you rock and if you need a hair cut? Call them up immediately!!!

What a great find! The salon is around the corner from me, in Historic Oella, so I took a chance and made an appointment with Michael for a cut and color and am very happy with both. Michael was friendly, professional and most important, he paid attention to what I expressed as likes/​dislikes about my hair cut and color. He took his time and throughout my visit, made sure that I was comfortable. I think DMS is a little gem and I’m so pleased to have found it. I will definitely be back.

What a great hidden salon! I went today for my first haircut after my mom and my sister recommended it. It is located in a cute historic house hidden up the hill in Oella just outside of Old Ellicott City.
I was offered tea or coffee immediately upon arriving and sat in the comfortable waiting area. Nicole was my stylist and she took time to ask questions about exactly what I wanted. Then came the shampoo, which may have been the best part only because it was so fabulous. They massage your scalp with essential lavender and peppermint oils before they shampoo and it was SO relaxing. They used all Kevin Murphy products, which I hadn’t heard of before but they smelled fabulous and used a lot of natural oils with no sulfates.
Nicole was equally conscientious about my cut. She took a lot of time with my very long hair and even had me stand up to make sure it was hanging evenly. She was also a very nice, young girl who made it a fun experience. She finished up with another Kevin Murphy product which I loved so much that I bought it to bring home.
Moral of the story: this is a fabulous salon. It’s a little small, but that means you get very personal service and attention. From the shampoo to the cut, it was a very professional and relaxing experience at $ 40 for a cut and style which is very reasonable. I liked it so much here that, while I live in Boston, I’m going to get my hair cut when I come home. Excellent salon, highly recommended!
