The China Sun has set, and now Kabuki’s has taken over. Great drinks(I recommend the ginger drop made with their own homemade ginger vodka) and consistently good food. The owners worked at Shoji’s over 20 years and have brought that experience and flavor to their own place. Ginger dipping sauce is to die for. Don’t take reservations, but the wait is usually short.

China Sun has been gone from west Eugene for nearly two years now. The building is now occupied by Kabuki’s, a Japanese steakhouse that leaves much to be desired. Every Chinese restaurant in Eugene/Springfield is repulsive. Yes, I’ve tried them all, most of them several times. The problem is demographics; there are very few Chinese diners, so the restaurants offer Americanized Chinese food. This might please some, but is disgusting to those of us who know what Chinese food is supposed to be. Still, if you are determined to eat at a Chinese buffet, try Empire on Franklin Boulevard — it is somewhat tolerable.

The older, less refined two of the China Sun Buffets in Eugene lies here on West 11th, near a Shari’s and a slight array of strip clubs. The buffet is considerably less and relatively bland when compared to even the lowest of all Chinese buffets(see Far Man Buffet in Springfield). The service has been decent, as they are polite and courteous. The price is solid, but much more bang for your buck can be made at the other location in Springfield. The décor is solid, clean tables, slightly small and the parking looks big but is really shared with another business. The buffet line contains few authentic Chinese items and has a lot of American-Chinese options(won tons, fried dumplings, spring rolls, sweet and sour chicken, etc.). The sushi is just peas, carrots and avocado, nothing distinctive at all.
