Gonsea Restaurant

I used to really like this place. The last few visits however have been bad. Warm sushi poorly rolled. Wait staff changing prices on us after we already ordered. Fried food tastes like bad oil. Sweet and sour sauce seemed old or reused. Ruined meals too many times. We go out to eat to have a good time. None was had here.

The worst Chinese food ever! The sweet and sour pork was fried twice, the sauce was watery, and it was cold. The broccoli beef, again running watery sauce, and I’m not sure if it was even beef. Panda Express or the freezer Chinese would get 6 stars out of 5 over this place. Save your taste buds and your wallet and eat elsewhere

Great food with many choices at fair prices. The lady at the counter is a real delight, very friendly and polite. Great for Chinese or sushi.

Worst of all was the lack of cleanliness.
Every utensil was dirty (food stains, oily, etc) and I’m pretty confident they gave us someones left over sweet and sour sauce.
Gross.

Sitting here waiting on a to-​go order. Never eaten here before because the place alwasy looked kinda run down. Gave it a chance because it was close. Im a fat guy when it comes to ordering so i often order extra beef, chicken ect with whatever i get. I ordered the fish and rice bown and i wanted teriyaki beef to be added the lady barley spoke english just tells me «no» i said «oh. so i cant add any meat to this rice bowl» and she said «no its different dishes, no adding u need to pay like everyone else» … ok so i guess she thought i was trying to get somthing for free? I wasnt. I told her «you can charge me whatever i just wanted to add teriyaki beef» she stared atvme and said «no.ittss different» in broken english. So at this time there was another employee normal white lady and she tried to explain to the Chinese lady that i simply wanted beef added to my fish bowl, nope the Chinese lady didnt budge even to her own perfectly reasonable employee. It was actually really awkward. I order the rest of my food and im being super respectful and she rly didnt gaf about any of it lol. Meanwhile ppl coming in and they arevopen for a whole other HOUR but all she blurts out to ppl coming in is «order to go?!» And they are just like «oh uh no, eating in» when u just assume someones getting an order to go you make it see like you dont want them to eat in. Just a dumb lady. Typical didnt gaf attitude. And physically COULDNT let me add extra beef to my rice bowl LOL. This is why i never came here it just seems like a place that would be EXACTLY like this. Durrr. Dude you have broken english you dont have to fill that mean asian lady stereo type where everyone is just inconvenient and trying to steal or get free shit. Idk maybe i caught her in a bad day. Idfk but ugh hell with this weird lil ghetto place with TRULY sub par food.

I ate in twice, good food! Then I ordered to go. So sad :(
They didn’t clean the shrimp, the eggplant was glue, and the rice was dry.
I half expected my fortune cookie to read «Your meal will suck».

Place was busy, but service was quick and efficient! Food was pretty good, prices not bad. Greg, the waiter did a great job taking care of his many tables!

Best place to eat Chinese food in Humboldt county. I usually eat the orange chicken and it is probably one of the best dishes there. It’s so delicious! Their serving sizes will not leave you hungry. If you’re looking for good Chinese food go here!!!

We’ve been very happy when we’ve dined in, but last night we ordered take out. My husband got all the way home to discover they had given us the wrong food. After waiting five minutes for the line to be clear, he got through and explained the situation. They offered to re-​cook our order at no charge, but it was another long drive into town, and this time no chopsticks or fortune cookies. My dish also seemed a little light on the prawns. Very disappointing.

It’s good, the food the service and the selection is one of the best in town. They could use some interior decorating but other than that it’s the boom.

My family ordered take out on Saturday June 13, 2015. My husband and good family friend have been very ill for two days since. Food poisoning is no joke. That said, we will not return to gonsea restaurant.

This used to be the BEST in the area, no more, dirty and food is hit and miss mostly miss. Jean the owner used to be there quite a lot. I never see her and the quality has definitely suffered.

I’m not a big fan of Chinese food but from their amazing food and their awesome service, I would have to say Gonsea is my favorite Chinese restaurant in Humboldt. Very quick and friendly staff, even when ordering take out. The inside is very spacious and nicely decorated.

Been here 3 times. Food is ok but there has always been an air about the servers that has made me feel as if I’m not the type of customer they wish to serve. Won’t be returning.

Have always had excellent food and services. I highly recommend this restaurant. You can eat in the restaurant or order meals to go. They are always courteous and helpful. I eat at this restaurant as often as possible.

Ordered to go, Mongolian Beef, Szechuan Lamb, and two orders of Crab Cheese Puffs.
Order was prompt, I live a short distance away, so I walked. And I didn’t have to wait very long.
Got home, dug into the food. Was a little disappointed. My Szechuan Lamb was half full of green onion, barely cooked. And when I say green onion, they were only cut in half at most. The Mongolian Beef my GF got, was also ½ full of halves of green onion.
The sauce was good. But once I got near the bottom, I noticed they put dry noodles on the bottom of the Lamb. But they had been sitting in it for only… 10 minutes and had become near mush, I could only tell they were dry because not all of them had dissolved yet. And the dry crunchy parts tasted stale.
The Crab Cheese Puffs were ok, but they didn’t have any Crab in them.
Overall… I think that they need to rethink their cooking strategy, and fire a few cooks. Maybe offer something other than a box full of green onions when someone orders two items off there menu.

The place sucks now! Low Quality product now… I will not eat at this dive anymore. It use to be BOMB! No longer.

Chicken Chow Mein – FAB! I’m a Chow Mein Enthusiast! So far, this is the best I’ve had in town. I love a lot of their other fare as well, Broccoli Beef was pretty bomb, fried rice was deelish’s and don’t even get me started on those cream cheese or crab, or crab cheese rangoon things. As a few others commented, the sweet n’ sour pork did fall kinda flat, it was kinda puffy/​soggy. BUT, that said my family Valentines dinner takeout from Gonsea had my stomach happies. I don’t know how to pronounce this place, but all I know is after finishing all of this food, I felt like I was gone-​see-​ya! (Food Coma).

Food is great. Especially the sushi — and the price is awesome. The wait staff is usually really attentive, kind and fast. Have a funny feeling the managment/​owner situation is terrible — when I walk in the women who wears what looks like «traditional» garb is rude, slow, unappriciative and in general not fun to be around.

Do not eat lunch here. That’s my first tip. The dinner is great, fresh and delicious. Everytime I’ve ordered off the lunch menu it comes out cold and disgusting. I think they pre cook the noodles, rice, etc and by the time is gets to you it’s just cold and unappetizing.
