Probably the best place in Lower Bucks County for surplus guns but selection pales in comparison to Sarco in Easton. Their regular modern guns are priced fair. Trade in value at this store is middle-low, they operate like a pawn shop in this regard. I usually choose another place to trade of I can help it. Staff can run hot and cold depending on who you get. I’ve gotten some great deals here especially during their black friday sales. On the other hand I’ve walked in with $ 1500 cash for an item, I was $ 4 or $ 5 short on the total and had to go hit an ATM because they wouldn’t budge off of the price in that amount even for cash. Ammo prices are competitive to good. Not my favorite place around but I usually walk out happy more often than not.

So I wasn’t quite sure whether to give this place 2 or 3 stars. Despite rude customer service, a just okay selection, and reasonable but not bargain prices, I decided to give it a 3 on the basis of the quality of the merchandise. Lemme break it down… So with the election looming and prices spiking in anticipation of an Obama victory I decided to go AK-47 shopping(yeah, I’m a gun nut but I voted for Obama, as I’m also a union guy and he was the lesser of two evils on that front). Anyhow, I decided I best look for a WASR-10(semi-auto Romanian build), which is one of the shittier AK builds but pretty damn cheap, although if I came across a reasonably-priced Yugoslavian AK(better build) I’d opt for that. I’d heard online that Surplus City was an especially good place to shop for WASRs as the owner personally inspects them before purchase to weed out some of the more common quality control issues with Romy AKs(canted front post sights and gas blocks and even sometimes pistons, and too much«give» in the mag well). I got there and unfortunately they had no Yugos in stock. In fact I think the only AKs chambered in 7.62 were WASR-10s. But they did have a bunch of WASRs in stock(about a dozen on the racks) as well as many bolt-action rifles, including some reasonably priced Remington 700s and Lee-Enfields. They all looked to be in good shape so I had the clerk hand me a mag and I chose the one with the best fit in the mag well. The price was reasonable but not great. You’d do better buying online or at a gun show, but for a gun shop in the Greater Philly area it was a reasonable price. They did have some good bargains on other guns and accessories. If you want bulk surplus ammo cheap, this is a good place to shop. The clerk was a bit rude however. Not friendly at all and wore a seemingly permanent scowl. Shit, getting paid to sit on my ass and play with and talk about guns would be something close to a dream job for an overgrown white trash macho little boy like me– I’d be happy to chat with the customers! But like the prices, this is pretty damn typical of gun shops in the Philly suburbs. In the city or the sticks the gun shop employees tend to be friendly but three out of the four I’ve been to in the suburbs have guys like this working there. It’s almost like they’re pissed off to have to be selling you a gun. I can understand that attitude for the clueless wannabe gangbangers who come in looking for a Desert Eagle, but shit… I’m well-dressed and I know my guns, and I’m white too. Well, at least I look white, I’m half-Arab and have a Muslim name but they don’t know that until I fill out the paperwork for the gun. So why the instant rudeness/hostility? Where’s that damn white skin privilege when you need it? Although I suppose it does come in handy at the airport… a few extra questions and maybe an extra bag search with my name, but I suppose not being brown-skinned saves me from the full-body cavity search. Anyhow, I didn’t knock it down to two cause… I dunno… maybe he was having a bad day and besides he’s not the only person who works there and maybe the rest are nice. Back to the rifle… I got it home, field-stripped it, gave it a closer inspection, and cleaned off the cosmoline preservative gunk. Everything was copacetic except for the fact the clip for the sling was missing, but luckily my housemate had a clip that, while not designed for a sling, did the job perfectly. It’s kinda ugly as far as AKs go, but that’s a Romy for you, nothing some refinishing of the furniture won’t fix. So I took it out to the range for the first time and it stovepiped three or four times. Uh-oh…AKs are not supposed to jam… ever. So when I got it back instead of just field-stripping it I took apart the bolt assembly. The cosmoline had completely gunked up the extractor and spring. Cleaned that off and put the bolt back together, and when I took it to the range again it fired flawlessly and accurately(well, as accurate as you can expect from an AK with me firing it). I’m very happy with this purchase and the weapon has none of the common quality control issues associated with WASR-10s. Indeed this guy does do a good job of picking his inventory, so 3 stars it is. The bottom line on this place is if you don’t expect friendly and helpful customer service it’s a good place to buy a Romanian AK, an SKS or a military-style bolt-action rifle. If you want dirt cheap prices on an AK you’re probably better off at a gun show, but the prices are in line with other area gun shops, and it’s a great place to buy cheap ammo for your AK. If you are relatively new to guns, however, you might want to bring a more knowledgeable friend with you to help out, because depending on who’s working and what kind of mood they’re in, the staff might not be too helpful to let you know what to look for if you’re looking for a Romy. Otherwise spend a little extra $ and pick up a Yugo if they have one.
