I went to the Fern for lunch and had their famous Meatloaf sandwich. The sandwich, fries, and a coke, ~$ 4.30, what a value. The restaurant itself is a dive that is totally a place for the locals, but the food was very good. The meatloaf was flavorful, juicy, and they provided us with pickles and raw onions. The fries were fine, nothing special. They had several others sides, cole slaw, cheese balls. There is no guest checks, each guest just walks up to the bar and tells the cashier what they had. Not a place I’d hang in, but one of the better lunch meals I’ve had in Findlay, and certainly can’t beat the value.

Do you want The Fern’s famous homemade meatloaf sandwich, their choice of bar area or dining room for the family, or a bartender who remembers you, your drink, and listens if you need it? How about a small but rowdy crowd that is made up of the locals and doesn’t hesitate to shake your hand and welcome you into their trivia games or Fantasy Nascar rosters? For activities, there’s Keno and a pool table and you can be sure that on any night of the week, you will find good friends. Finally, the Roast Beef Manhattan or the lunch specials such as lasagna or an S.O.S. are delicious. Where else can two people eat(your choice of bar food or the more homemade line-up) and have drinks and sides and walk out for under twenty?

The Fern Café sits near the downtown area. It’s been around forever, and has its own loyal, local following. With their menu of fried bar food(tenderloin sandwiches, etc.), I would consider this to be a competitor to the West End Tavern. It has a large dining room off to the east side of the building, with the bar on the west. The tenderloin sandwich, or Big T, is delicious and not outlandishly priced. The atmosphere is that of a local bar, which isn’t a bad thing. It’s just reminds you of a place to stop by after working at the plant or farm for a beer with your buddies. If you’re not health conscious, I’d recommend swinging by. You may want to take some antacids with you, though.
