Asked about the wine tasting sign that was up, was told that they where really busy and the person hung up. The worst part is i was driving thought and looking for some wine to take to a party, way to lose money by hanging up.

After lunching at Griffin Tavern this past Wednesday, stopped in here, since I’ve been on the market’s e-mail list(the e-mail lists an impressive amount of seafood that can be special-ordered weekly), but have never been in person. Talk about disappointment! Flint Hill isn’t so much a town as it is a tiny hamlet. Sneeze & you’ll miss it. I’m hardpressed to figure out how a shop like this is staying alive(although who knows — they haven’t been in business all that long). I can only assume that Flint Hill residents are pretty much held captive when it comes to grocery shopping, as they have a relatively long drive to either Culpeper or Warrenton in order to hit mainline supermarkets. While the premises were clean & neat, the prices are absolutely through the roof. Stock is eclectic — a plethora of shelf gourmet-type items; some wines & beers; a rather pathetic small basket of lemons, limes, & one baseball-bat-size zucchini; & a few packages of paper towels & toilet paper. Two chest freezers held a variety of frozen poultry, meats, & game(game courtesy of D’Artagnan), & an upright freezer held some frozen fish, the prices of which took my breath away. $ 10.99/lb. for frozen Cod? I love Cod & buy it often, but a price like that isn’t going to have me opening my wallet. I won’t even get into the frozen wild salmon prices. Let’s just say that she’s charging the same prices for frozen that places like Whole Foods & Wegmans are charging for their FRESH/never frozen wild salmon. Big difference. Upright fridge cases held dairy & more D’Artagnan products like pates, fois gras, etc., etc. One has to wonder what the turnover is for items like this in Flint Hill. I purchase fairly frequently from D’Artagnan online & know for a fact that their pates, etc., have a definite & not very long shelf life. Bottom line: I love little local gourmet markets. Love perusing them, love buying from them, & love supporting local businesses. But I have to give Moo Market a pass. Except for the fact that they carry D’Artagnan products & «might» save me shipping costs(I didn’t check the market’s prices on these products — am kicking myself that I didn’t), I can’t see making the 40 – 45 minute drive just for that. With gas prices the way they are, paying D’Artagnan’s shipping costs would probably end up the same as buying from Merry Moo Market.

Flint Hill is very lucky to have such a shinning star like Merry Moo Market. Gail is a wonderful gourmet who is bring delicious, fresh, and local food to Rappahannock County. From fresh fish, meats and poultry to farm fresh eggs, cheeses and diary products, this store exemplifies the essence to sustainability. She specializes in all areas of food. It is clear that people enjoy having the market near to them, even though she has only been open a year. Gail is constantly expanding her shop to include more wines, produce, and inventory as her customer base continues to grow. It’s wonderful to have such a little gem that is open 7 days a week! Please don’t pay attention to Hannah Y(who looks like she was expecting a wal-mart) and give Merry Moo Market a try! It’s the perfect place for any gourmet! While the prices may be a little higher, you are getting organic, wonderful food that is satisfying!
