This was our first time in, and after our experience, I’m also most certain people are being FAR to picky. We were greeted by a friendly man who showed us how everything worked. The lady who rang up our order helped us navigate the menu, and pointed is in the direction of some delicious choices. I had the fish tacos(fried) and a Cesar salad. All of it was awesome! The only complaint I had was that it was too much for me to finish! My husband had the chicken fried steak, which was cooked to perfection. We split a small cup of the baked potato and bacon soup, and OHMYGOSH… It was wonderful. It is a must try. Several times throughout our meal, staff would come by to check on us. The restaurant has a gelato bar, which I found myself most excited for. The same friendly man who greeted us at the beginning gave us several suggestions/samples of gelato to try. I ended up with the red velvet and French vanilla. It was a wonderful combination. My suggestion for anyone venturing to the black walnut café is to come hungry, and expect delicious food. Yes, there are different stations to order at… but you should know that before you come, and know that the food is well worth it. Enjoy!

Not so much, like it that is. Stopped by for breakfast on a Saturday morning. First clue should have been the empty parking lot. Interesting concept, grab a menu, decide what you want, then go to the counter to order, get a pager, return and wait for food and then pick it up from counter. Ok I get it, but with an empty restaurant you would think the food would be hot. Not so much :(

My overall rating is somewhere between 3 an 4 stars. What I dont like: Weird food order system… back and forth system… is like you are doing a trek before, during and after ordering your food, including squats… up, down, up, down. But the restaurant meets the upscale casual benchmark. Very millenial …@$!#/^&*. Solution: sit at the bar and order… Food I have tried most of the menu and is pretty decent. Some items are better than others, but I would give them 3.75 out of 5 stars. Atmosphere Good, local Flo Mo crowd. Most of the people I’ve met are cool down to earth people. Bar Simple. Super friendly Bartenders. No premium liquors. Small drafts selection(5 or 6). Did I mentioned how nice the bartenders are… prices are average for the area. Happy Hour. Simple and Basic not a lot of selections. or discounts… It ends too early, What will make this place 5 star restaurant: 1. Jazz or acoustic on friday or saturday nights. From 2100 to 2230. 2. Premium Liquors(Ky straight Bourbon anyone?)…Expanded drafts offerings. 3. Happy Hour to be extended till 2000 4. 1 discreetly placed big screen TV(OTHERTHANTHEONESINTHEBAR). After meeting the suggestions, opening till midnight… wouldn’t be a bad idea. I will continue my support and encorage you to give it a try… Thank you for reading my review.

This was my first time visiting and I am impressed! I’m from out of town & visiting family and we went here for breakfast. The staff was very pleasant and the food was great! I ordered chocolate chip pancakes and they were great, but the serving size is huge! So be prepared to eat! :)

Food was absolutely amazing as always… however, I ordered a mimosa that was so disgusting and strong it was undrinkable. It looked as if someone put mustard in it because the bartender must’ve forgotten to shake the orange juice. Not the first time this bartender has messed up a drink I’ve ordered. 5 stars for the food, 2 stars for the drinks.

Average food with good service. Not the best ambient due to the lights being on as bright as possible but I do have to say the bartender Laura or Laurie was excelent.

Stopped by while waiting for my daughter to get a hair cut. The menu has lots of choices! However, it’s counter ordering and self service. I was a bit disappointed. The soup was REALLY salty… like I couldn’t finish it. And my mimosa was lack luster… and it’s hard to screw one of those up. He over poured the bubbly causing it to overflow heavily then instead of topping it off with bubbly… added more orange juice. Handed me a wet sticky glass to enjoy. Didn’t even bother to wipe it off. Good idea but not well executed.

Normally I don’t bother with reviews but black walnut is worthy. We have tried multiple stores in the dfw area. Today we went to breakfast to give it a fourth shot. I had to send my breakfast back because it was cold. We were the fourth customer in the door and they were already out of coffee. I got my second try at breakfast and both the potatoes and the sausage were still just above cold in temperature. We will not go back even though it is less than a block away. Overpriced and underwhelming.

Amazing! First time here and we were in no way disappointed. The Lobster Benedict is heaven… neither of us have ever had a better poached egg. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming. We cannot recommend this place enough!

Normally love this chain but this location was not good. My breakfast quesadillas were completely full of cilantro instead of cheese. The salsa was mostly green from cilantro and the guac. Well you get the idea. This location also had no pancakes on the menu, which was a big letdown as my s/o usually gets the gluten free ones. She got omelette instead which was«meh». Coffee was good and we didn’t get sick from the food, so I’ll leave this at 3 stars. Staff was friendly. Overall disappointed and won’t come back to this location as it does not live up to the Black Walnut standard we’re used to at other locations.

I understand why people find the concept of this restaurant strange, but with that behind you the food was good. I had a black bean burger that was fantastic as it was accompanied with a nice spicy humus. The staff were very friendly and welcoming and on Saturdays they’re open until 11p which is awesome.

This was the WEIRDEST place I’ve ever eaten at. You have to self serve yourself what seemed like 3 different stations. I had to order a glass of wine at the bar, then walk across the restaurant. Go back up and order food. Then after your buzzer goes off, go pick up your food. Then if you want water or refills go and get that for yourself. Then I had to go back to the bar to close out my tab. Needless to say I was pooped after this ordeal! On the good side, my seared tuna salad was delicious. Dated décor & seats reminded me of a cruise ship. Just weird. Of at the end someone finally came to pick up the dished. It just seemed like there could be 1 server who’s only job was to deliver food. Maybe another to refill drinks. In any event, I will never eat here again.

We are somewhat regular customers by now. I wanted to try a variety of selections before settling in on a review. All in all my family really likes this place. Except for a chicken dish that was dry, the food is really good. The lobster tacos are my personal favorite. The desserts are huge and great for sharing. I’m witholding the 5th star for a few reasons. While. I personally enjoy the food I have seen several disgruntled guests on several visits so I wonder if my number just hasn’t come up yet. Second, the restaurant is set up and priced like a sit down meal, yet you order at the counter. I guess that is just how they do it but I don’t see the upside other them cutting costs on a wait staff. Last, it’s always cold in there. I realize this is TX and there is a big difference between outdide and inside but this place feels colder than most. Even though I bring a sweatshirt I feel compelled to get out quickly. Maybe that’s what they want :-)

Visited Black Walnut Café during our rainy Girls’ Weekend & have to say our(really, my) verdict was = unfortunately not impressed BFF got the grilled cheese & potato-bacon soup & said it was«only okay». I didn’t note any stringy pulls from her sandwich but did note she left a lot of bread behind — if that tells anything about the amount of cheese on that sandwich I chose the Frenchie(french toast, eggs, potatoes, meat) but without the meat. I saw the girl enter bacon as my choice, so I called her on it…’cause see, I’m vegetarian. So herein lies the issue. The girl pointed out to me that the register apparently won’t allow her to note«No Meat» so she selected bacon & would just tell the kitchen. What could I do but say oh, okay… You can see where this is going… Sure enough, when BFF went to retrieve our plates, there was bacon all over my french toast. So I walk it back up to the counter, like a jerk, & explain that the bacon fat had now seeped all over the french toast, so I needed a whole new meal. See above reference to vegetarian. I hate having this conversation but there was just no way I was eating that And I do have to offer credit that they did in fact, make a whole new meal. No taste of pig residue to be found, so I do thank you for really making a new plate & not trying to think you could fool me by just removing the bacon(as some places have tried in the past) They also stopped by our table later to apologize, so that part was nice too Unfortunately the french toast had too much citrus for my taste & the potatoes were undercooked. Breakfast potatoes should *never* be crunchy. When trying to choose brunch spots in the future, sorry to say but it won’t be BWC

We decided to give Black Walnut Café another chance. We understand that when we first visited there, they were quite new and possibly were still trying to get things right. Nope! Just like the first visit, maybe worse. I had the«Big Plate», with turkey sausage and eggs over medium. I just don’t understand how the food can come out cold if it is cooked to order. The food was cold or under temperature. The over medium eggs were undercooked and runny. I have no idea how the sausages were cooked(I assume microwave) because theywere not browned at all. If they were grilled or pan fried that would have some carmelization on them. Black Walnut Café is just what I originally said it was. It is an overpriced fast food restaurant that is trying to appear upscale. If you want to be upscale, maybe you should try cooking the food properly, and serve it hot.

This was our first trip to Black Walnut and we were very disappointed. We don’t get the concept. Seat yourself and read the menu, then go to the counter and place your order, then go pick up your order and bring it back to your table. Ok I can get on board with ordering at the counter but why not have the staff run the food out? The atmosphere doesn’t match the self service concept. My husband ordered the grilled cheese with tomato and bacon and it came without the tomato and bacon and barely any cheese. I will concede that my pot roast was good. One star is all I can give for this experience.

So this is our second attempt at dining at a BWC. I really do want to like this place. This the the second location we have tried and have been underwhelmed. Tonight I tried the Grilled Cheese with Tomato and Thick Bacon. At best average… the bread was good but the quality of the cheese and tomato left something to be desired. My spouse ordered Parmesan Chicken. Again it was average at best. The chicken was not as thin as a good home made and the breading was very soggy. The worst part was that there was an onion skin in the marinara sauce. see photo… All that said… we may just not have found anything they do well yet… maybe 3rd time will be a charm?

My wife and I came here for breakfast, and we’re underwhelmed. Both of us selected a variation on Eggs Benedict. She had one with sirloin, which was accompanied by home fries. I had a Cordon bleu that had three strands of asparagus as a garnish. Both eggs were properly cooked, yolks soft and runny when pierced, but overall both lacked seasoning. Potatoes were inconsistent, with some being burnt and crunchy and others undercooked. Asparagus was overdone and limp. All things considered, at more than $ 15 per plate, it was not an outstanding value. Addendum: did pause for some of their gelato on the way out, which although still a little pricier than other gelato shops was defiantly worthwhile and enjoyable.

Strange concept for what appears to be an upscale restaurant… but the food was good luckily they had a greeter at the door explaining how it works, or we would have been wandering aimlessly

This is not a review of the food. My wife and I decided to try this on a Thursday evening after work. We pulled into the lot and realized it was busy but wanted to try it since we had seen photos of the food and it looked good. We walked in and the two young hostess asked us if we had been there before and we said no. He explained that it was a commissary where you pick out your seat then order from a station and then wait for a pager to go off and then return to pick up the food. We scouted the place out and it was packed so no table available. Why employ a host and hostess if they are only going to be greeters? Why can’t they manage seating parties? After experiencing this I told my wife that we can go elsewhere. I looked at the menu and it looked inviting but I asked myself why I would pay market rate for food that I have to work to get? Fighting lines and other people is not my idea of comfort food. Sorry, won’t get a second chance unless we see it is extremely slow.
