I buy breakfast from this bakery Saturdays and Sundays. Compared to other bakeries it is pricier but the quality of the buns are better than most. I always get the Mexican style dried pork bun or the pizza bread. My brother would always order the ham and egg bread. In terms of the beverages, it varies. Some days it would taste amazing and other days not so much. Recently I’ve been ordering the milk tea and coffee combo. I’ve noticed that their coffee is strong so I would always ask for more tea, less coffee.

This is quite a standard sort of bakery, but the location makes it easy to miss! The quality is similar to Fay Da or Taipan, but with a Taiwanese flavor. The seating and décor is girlishly cute. The staff is friendly and quick. The location is not that convenient, so I would probably not come again soon.

Small Chinese bakery right up the street from Skyview Mall, prices for baked goods are around $ 1.25 so very cheap. The décor is colorful and cute and I liked the fact that they had scallion buns and was more impressed by their seaweed and scallion buns, however the customer service was questionable. Everything went fine up until I requested a bag to go, at which one of the cashier’s with heavy eyeliner started staring at my chest, said something(in Chinese of course) and another clerk started giggling… hmmm. Even if I don’t know what you’re saying still doesn’t mean that I DON’T know I’m being talked about. With that said, I realized that would be the only time for me as I cannot and will not put up with rude workers, Flushing has plenty of bakeries and with nicer, less catty(at least not dumb enough to do that in your face) female employees no less. So once is enough for me! Two stars for the food and variety, but thanks to the rude cashier I can’t give a higher rating than that.

Catherine Bakery is tucked near the Long Island Railroad tracks on College Point Boulevard away from the main thoroughfare. Because there is much more traffic on Main Street, this wonderful Chinese bakery can be missed. It’s new too and very clean. I can see the colored flags that hang on the outside exterior and the gifts of plants inside. I hope more people take time to discover Catherine and if you are near the SkyView Mall, it’s not too far a walk. When you come in there are some dark cherry stained wood looking barstools and matching counter where on one side you can look out from the window into the street. Further in, there are counters of baked goodies and 3 small tables. The tables have colorful written words on the table tops. One table has a beautiful orchid on the table. Inside one of the bakery displays, it was filled with cakes. I spied a dog shaped cake, and even a round domed cake, and some adorned with fruit decorations. On top of the counter there were packaged cookies and they also had sliced cakes, and one in a cup with fruits on top. They had a taro cookie for $ 1.75. Which is really a pastry made with an oil and water dough that are wrapped together to form a flaky, crust that forms spirals by some manipulating and flattening and folding of the layers. The end result is something that looks beautiful and intricate but is not as complicated as it looks. I could tell one of the doughs was colored blue. These flaky spirals always impress me visually. This one probably has a taro filling. I had the cream bun, the pork sung pastry and the walnut cookie to go. The cream bun did not have shredded coconut, but it did have little bits of coating that clung to the tops and sides of the bread and tasted like sprinkles of pineapple bun tops. The cream wasn’t the best because it tasted a bit salty and the consistency reminded me of shortening infused cream, but the bread was dense and chewy it didn’t taste like whipped air. The bread has substance and deserves a much better cream. The pork sung, wasn’t what was described in English. I was thinking it would be a pork floss, but instead it was a small pork patty tucked into a flaky pastry. This one was unusual in a good way. My favorite was the walnut cookie. It was light, flaky and crisp. The cookie is huge and it was nicely brown and golden. This place is self-service. There is a station that houses trays, tongs and sheets of waxed paper. You line your tray, grab your tong and then go and select your pastries. The guys that work here were really nice and friendly and even helped me bring my tray to the counter. I spied some butter toast for $ 2.25, pork sung(pork floss) buns for $ 1.25. Some pastries are contained and wrapped in neat little plastic packages, while others are loose and placed in wax paper baggies at the checkout counter. These pastries are very affordable and consistent and the quality quite good. Along with the pastries, you can get teas, coffee and milk teas with black pearls. A good place to unwind and rest tired feet.
