Well… it was fun while it lasted. The mall has gone out of business as of January 30th, 2015. Looks like most of the businesses has either relocated to various venues in the area, or has packed up shop. The dorayaki vendor has moved into J-Mart at the New World Mall, the Taiwanese and the steak place moved to the new food court on Roosevelt across from the NYCHA projects… and the Korean Chinese dumpling ladies has moved to a stall on the lower level food court at New World Mall. The developers will tear it down and replace it with 416 story condominiums. I can’t say that this was a surprise, since rumors of the mall being on the chopping block has circulated since 2010 when Flushing Commons started construction across the street… which prompted most of the existing tenants to move out once their lease is up. Well, it has been a good, long, 15 year run. You guys have served the community well. Happy trails… and may you be remembered for your past contributions. Rest in peace.

It’s sad to see the transformation of a beloved mall such as this over the course of a few short years. On any given weekday expect to see less than a few dozen occupants. Only thing worth coming here is for A. local event sponsor and B. hot sizzling steaks made in front of you. Since New World Mall has open up, I felt the vendors here are feeling the squeeze and are moving out for new venture. The location is just isolated by default and had they open on or near Main St. they might have survive much longer. Regardless, I still come here for the Taiwanese Ice and Steaks. It’s still a nice place to bring your date.

Flushing mall was popular a few years ago when it first opened but since then it’s become a secluded, run-down version of it’s former self. This review is not going to be about the food court because nothing in there is really worth talking about. Aside from the exceptionally unexceptional food court, a bidet store and a few Asian clothing shops there is one redeeming business that keeps the mall alive– a hand-made dumpling restaurant! Not too many people know about this place because it is in the middle of the mall and NOT located in the food court, where one would expect it to be. I never knew about this hidden gem until my mom, also a foodie(like mom, like daughter? :D) brought me there one day! It’s almost as if it’s intentionally concealed from the main part of the mall so only people who still work there or who are long time patrons of this business know of this place. I honestly don’t know how else other people would ever find out about it as I don’t remember there even being a sign displaying the name. Well, now it’s on Unilocal! The dumpling business is run by a few Chinese-Korean older ladies who hand make the dumplings right in front of you from scratch! The space is pretty much an open kitchen where they boil the dumplings when you order. Fillings range from various combinations of pork, egg, leek, shrimp. The dumplings with all the ingredients tastes the best! With the dumplings, you get a home-made dipping sauce and a small plate of kimchi. There is complimentary barley tea to compliment your meal as well. In addition to dumplings, this restaurant also serves a variety of noodles. I’ve ordered the naengmyun(Korean cold noodles) in the past and it really exceeded my expectations. The buckwheat noodles were chewy and fresh and the savory broth, chilled to perfection with thinly shaved ice. I could tell that it was definitely not store bought naengmyun, which I’ve been served at Korean restaurants in the NYC before. The only downside to this restaurant/food stall is the location. If you enter through the basement entrance(the one closest to the food court) you’d need to go upstairs and cross the bridge to the middle of the building. It’s a bit of a hassle to get to but for the quality food that is served here, the trip is worth it!

This mall is not shutdown yet but by the looks of it, it is on the verge. The food court is the only reason to come here. I forget how to get d

This review is for the food court only and truth to be told, the rest of the mall is pathetic and not worth your time unless you are into buying random Chinese fashion pieces or overpriced mobile phone accessories. I really like the food court because it has some authentic Taiwanese dishes down here. My favorite is their Sacha Squid Noodle soup for $ 6.5. It is one big bowl of noodle soup and it reminds me of home so much! They also give you tons of squid if you love that stuff. I also really like their Stinky Tofu too. It is crispy and tender at the same time and they give you a gigantic plate! If you love Taiwanese food, you can’t go wrong coming here.
