Tong Tong Tonkatsu

Katsu lover, this is your heaven! If you want to get good unhealthy food, this is the place to go wild.
I pass by this unnoticeable place every day, I didn’t pay any attention because its usually empty. After a year of passing by, I finally went in to try. I love katsu but I never went to Japan and try the real ones there, so the ones in NYC are all I have got :\
Their menu is simple, their main dish is katsu, pork, chicken, fish, etc other fried stuff. It comes with rice and salad and soup.
Their katsu is out of this world, lets talk crust. It is soft and crispy at the same time. It’s like they are made of cotton candy, but in a good way.
When you bite into it, the crust gives in and cripple with a clear and crisp crunch sound. It almost feels like it melt in your mouth.
I had the fish and pork katsu combo, the fish is so good, it is cook just right, not too soft that it fall apart nor is it rubbery. The pork is thick, like at least 1″ thick. This is where it set itself apart from all the katsu in the city, it is not hard at all. The meat is actually tender and soft, it is well cooked mind you, combine with the crumbling crust and you have a really good katsu.

I really like this place.
I usually get the fish tonkatsu and the soba noodles.
They give plenty of food and for me its the perfect mixture of breading and protein such as pork and fish.
The soba noodles are not too sour, and service is good for a fast casual sit down restaurant.

Their pork katsu is very juicy. A little too much breading but the taste makes up for that. Their sauce is close to perfect.

Crazy huge portions! Service was fast, and the food was great. Very filling and the guy who worked there was very funny.

The food is very good! I’ve ordered the Korean style tonkatsu & chicken katsu. Wish they given me more sides (i.e. rice, kimchi, salad etc.) but over all tasty. Will come back again!!! :)

Tonkatsu is the ultimate comfort food and this restaurant dedicated to tonkatsu is worth checking out. The place is unassuming, but they make some great tonkatsu. I like that you can grind your own sesame seeds with a mortar and pestle to mix your own sauce.
I ordered the Curry Pork Tonkatsu, which is a really heavy meal. The breading was so crispy and the pork was juicy without being fatty. The crunch is extremely satisfying. Japanese curry is always a great pairing with tonkatsu, but this was made better because of the large chunks carrots and potatoes added to the curry. Not only is the pork cutlet huge, they give you a huge mound of rice. To complete the tray they give you a bowl of shredded cabbage and Japanese pickles.
The portions are easily shareable between two people. If you’re greedy like me forego the belt and wear loose clothing. I really regretted eating the entire thing, but I couldn’t stop. I was pretty much sick of tonkatsu after, but now I’m over it and can’t wait to come back!

This is a really small Korean restaurant that mostly serves tonkatsu. They have a small parking lot in the front that is shared with the other stores next to the restaurant. So even if there isn’t space in the parking lot, it’s actually relatively easy to find street parking in that neighborhood.
They have some unique tonkatsu varieties, which is why I wanted to try this place. I got the sweet potato katsu. The sweet potato was inside of the katsu. I really liked the exterior, it was nice and crunchy. But I do have to warn you, the dish is kind of heavy. Besides the sweet potato filling and the pork itself, they also added cheese. I had trouble finishing it.
The waiter also brought us the sesame seeds to make our own sauce. & I got to say, I had no idea how we’re supposed to make it or what it was supposed to look like. We ended up giving up in the process of trying to make the sauce.
I like the restaurant for its unique tonkatsu dishes and it was a satisfying meal, but it didn’t blow me away.

Came here once & it was really filling. The portions were bigger than I expected, reasonable price.

Wow… not good at all. My party of 4 came here after an exam in search of good food but we were majorly disappointed. We got here at around 11am and there was no one in the restaurant. There is a parking lot outside the restaurant but it may be fully occupied. It’s a pretty small place with seating for, at most, 20 people and the décor is very plain. Service was ok.
We all ordered the Cordon bleu katsu, which is their signature dish, but none of us were impressed. It’s basically melted cheese with peppers and breading covering it. There was barely any meat in it… only an ultra-​thin layer that was so thin that you could barely make out the taste of the pork. There was way too much cheese and it just got too nauseating near the end. It also came with a cabbage salad that was too dry and tasted like nothing. There was salad dressing on the side but what’s the point… The corn salad had watery mayo in it, which was disgusting. The miso soup was way too salty. Honestly, the only thing I enjoyed eating was the bowl of rice…
I’m usually not really picky with food, especially if it’s cheap food. But the food here was just not good at all. I didn’t enjoy any of the food items in the Cordon bleu katsu meal and I find it ridiculous that we ended up paying $ 20 each for such a disappointment meal. Never coming back again.

I used to love this place when it first opened up. The owner (assuming the older man with glasses and short hair is the owner.) was really nice. Now he’s just grumpy and doesn’t smile. Whatever! Anyways.
The food used to be pretty good! I would order a lot and bring it out to Brooklyn or wherever and share with my friends. I don’t do it anymore. Depending on the day I go, the food is either really good or tastes burnt.
I usually get the cheesy sweet potato katsu. That was amazing! The fish isn’t bad and the the udon was pretty good too! This place has an English menu so ask for one if you need it.
Parking is sometimes hard to find and can be tight when selfish drivers with lack of experience or concern for others are eating at the restaurant. Sometimes it’s just hard to get out of the lot since there is heavy traffic during dinner time… Just be aware and park at your own risk!!!

Very disappointed at this place. Katsu was nothing out of this world. It was burned. Customer service? So-​So
But… I have one thing to say: «Watch out of the water bottle». They give you this water bottle when you sit down and it is DISGUSTING!!! Dirty! Dirty! Dirty! It has mold. Please be careful!

I often come this restaurant at least once or twice a week.
Unfortunately today, I ordered two lunch special which are two tonkasus and two udongs.
The server just asked «Do you guys want to have sauces on the side?» We said «No»
After that, when we got our lunches it was different order instead what we just ordered.
So we asked about this happening but the server told «No you guys order Regular tonkasus» with loud voices.
We had to have two lunch combos,
But we got two regular tongkasus.
My concerned point is,
How sucks customer service they have
They disrupted our lunch, so we couldn’t finish well.
If I ordered it wrong, they must not to say aloud.
I also work as a barista to face lots of customers.
I can’t even imagine this suck services.

I love getting the chicken katsu with the veggie curry sauce on the side! They give amazing portions with great sides. If you come here do get tonkatsu only. I was not too impressed by the noodles, I got that once and I will not get that again.

In an obscure spot that is easily overlooked (next to a dunkin donuts), is a great korean restaurant that is Tong tong tonkatsu!
***The waiter had handed us dinner menus but after ordering we noticed the lunch specials on the wall. LOOK AT THE WALL!***
This place has one of the best tonkatsus i have tried in the city and better yet it is situated in Flushing on Northern Blvd. I was skeptical about parking however there are a few spots directly in front of the restaurant which are mostly empty throughout the day.
I got the curry chicken tonkatsu while my friend ordered the cordon bleu katsu. The chicken was tender and not dry with a nice crunchy breaded exterior. The curry however, seems a little watery and bland however after finishing the meal i was glad it was not too thick because one meal can fill you up quick! The cordon bleu katsu is super cheese-​y and therefore gives ya that heart-​clogging oh so good feeling and the ITIS. My friend was unable to finish his meal. Each tonkatsu dish can range from $ 11 – 16.
Definitely going to come back for some more tonkatsu when i am in the mood!

Glad my friend took me here because the Tonkatsu was really good! The place was pretty empty when we went so the servers were pretty attentive to my group, always making sure our water was filled and making sure everything was okay!
I tried the Cordon Bleu Katsu. It is literally cheese heaven! The center is fillled with cheese. If you aren’t a fan of cheese, i recommend sharing the dish with someone cause the cheese can get too much after a while. It is paired with a sauce that you essentially make yourself! They give you sesame seeds and you used a mortar and pestle to crush up the seeds and then you add a sauce to it! It also comes with soup, rice, salad, and corn.
My friend got the Sweet Potato Cheese Roll Katsu and that was good too! First time i’ve ever seen katsu combined with sweet potato, definitely different.
They have a small parking lot in front but it only fits like 4 – 5 cars and getting out can be difficult so sometimes street parking is better.

I’ve been to this place a few times before and shame on me for not reviewing earlier.
Tong Tong Tonkatsu is great for, well, their tonkatsu, and they have various kinds to boast. I have had the Sweet potato, King Tonkatsu, fish tonkatsu, and the cordon bleu tonkatsu.
The Cordon Bleu is good, but you get sick of it after a while because it is very cheesy. I would recommend splitting this with someone if you choose to get it and get a regular tonkatsu or fish tonkatsu to balance it out.
Their portions are big and filling. We decided to get the ‘mo mil’ noodles today and you can add various «sides» to your main for an additional modest price.
Overall, good food, good portions, nice wait staff, and consistently good quality.

It’s a Korean restaurant that pretty much serves one thing, a Korean version of Don Katsu. I think the Tonkatsu here is great, the pork is super tender and the table side mortar and pestle for the sesame seeds is a nice touch for your own sauce. But I think it’s really pricey for what it is, my meal was $ 25, that’s with tax and tip included. I arrived on a weekday around lunch time and I wasn’t a fan of them writing the words «Lunch Special» in English but then writing what the specials are in Korean. Are only Koreans offered the lunch specials? Also, the waiter just handed me a regular dinner menu, so I ordered off of that. I only saw the words «Lunch Special» on the wall after I ordered.
The food:
Kimchi Cheese Katsu Nabe– Choice of Rosu, Hire or Chicken Katsu in a special Japanese stew with Korean pickled cabbage and fresh mozzarella and cheddar cheese. I really enjoyed this dish a lot, it was pretty much a kimchi stew with two pork cutlets draped in cheese. I thought the flavor of the stew was really nice, it had a nice kimchi flavor with a nice pop, the cutlets were very tender and crunchy and the cheese made it nice and gooey. There was one thing I was kinda turned off by, on the menu I chose the Hire pork cutlet since the waiter mentioned that it was leaner and less fatty, but he failed to mention the price was more expensive nor does the menu point this out. The dish on the menu was listed as $ 14.99, but the Hire came out to $ 18.99. Even though I really enjoyed the dish, I wasn’t a fan of not being notified of the price difference nor not having it printed on the menu.

Curry Tonkatsu– I thought the flavors of this were great and the cutlets were still crunchy. The curry was a Japanese curry with potato, onion and carrots and it paired really well with the cutlets.

Nice place to eat tonkatsu, it’s basically a Japanese version of Katsu.
Well food is good and space is big.
Will definitely be back again when I’m in the area.

I know this is going to seem really bad, and like I am a total n00b.
But… I have had tonkatsu in Japan and in South Korea, and Tong Tong Tonkatsu is the best I have ever had. Maybe because first love is the fondest memory, or the casual and relaxed Korean atmosphere. Either way it is an oasis from Main Street and a texture-​flavor combo that blew me away.
There is one dish that I order from Tong Tong that is my obsession; the Sweet Potato Tonkatsu. Filled with goguma, a specific Korean sweet potato and mozzarella cheese. Cover it in tangy Bulldog sauce, freshly ground sesame seeds, and creamy mayo for a— crunchy, sweet, salty, meaty, potatoey experience. There is so much going on at once that it is almost overwhelming.
I also tried the classic pork tonkatsu, which is fine. The breading is not light, nor the fillings always tender, more of a hearty meal here. But, I come here specifically for the sweet potato katsu.
Since TTT is on the west side of Northern Boulevard, it is totally walk-​able from Flushing Main Street and the 7 train. I am super lazy and not in good shape, and I walk there, no problem. However, you can catch one of the many buses that go up and down Northern if is an issue to walk.

When my friend and I went during lunch time, the wait time was very long.
But the food was great and the price was reasonable. They really give you a lot for your money (we had the lunch special with the donkatsu and udon).
