Hyde & Zeke’s was once located over directly across from campus near where Larry’s Giant Subs is now located and, in those days, was alongside the long-gone Skoolkids’ Records and the Hardback, the epicenter of Gainesville’s music scene. Now, the owner’s moved over to 10th Avenue next to Earth Pets in what has to be a cheaper space. His inventory is still impressive though now limited mainly to used and new LPs and fewer CDs by far than at the old location. He’s still a nice dude though and has plenty of history and opinions on the music industry to share if you care to listen. This is certainly a good place to look for odd music and probably gain some wisdom while at it. I wish it was closer to campus, but very glad to see it still alive and kickin’ nonetheless. By the way, beware the parking lot situation: the lot is very small and it’s possible to pull into a space and then nearly back into the part of the building Earth Pets rents while trying to get out. Best is to drive around the back of the place to escape the evil parking lot when you’re leaving, lest you’ll have to make a very tricky and neat three-point turn to get back on to 10th Avenue. The only parking lot worse than this one I’ve seen recently was Red Dog Surf Shop’s in New Smyrna Beach, which is in fact the Parking Lot from Hell.

Shit man. One review? Support this place before it becomes another footnote in the history of the local music scene. Go through all the boxes to find awesome consignment tshirts from the 80s, buy a couple of records, chat with the gruff dude at the register for a bit… just don’t let it die!

So, at some point in the past, rumor has it that this place had a larger location. Given the death spiral of most independent record stores since the rise of music downloads, Its kind of amazing that its still here. But this is Gainesville, a place that combines the future with Luddism with all irony intended. The space is small, cramped, worn and hot in the summer. Inventory: Mostly CDs and lots of vinyl. Now that vinyl is hip once more, this is the place for those who love that ‘warm’ sound, but don’t want to rummage through the bins at the Salvation Army.
