The Eastern Point Lighthouse is quite an amazing lighthouse but with the scenery and location come some very important things to know. I have heard of and seen people turn away because of the NIMBY residents of this neighborhood trying to stop visitors from driving on their streets. 1) There are numerous signs alerting people that the roads are private — IGNORE. 2) Once you enter pass the gates, there are more signs saying there is no parking — IGNORE 3) You will encounter sign after sign saying private road, street, neighborhood etc. IGNORE 4) Once you get to the end, there is limited parking that costs $ 10 per day(cash only, via permit/box)(usually all taken up by fishermen who get their super early). Unless you want to wait, park illegally, you may want to get there early or take turns going to the lighthouse with your carpool. 5) There is no road to the lighthouse; you have to walk along the shore/rocks. The high/low tides can make this easy/challenging. 6) I will receive numerous messages/flags from residents of Gloucester. That is understood and expected — I WILLIGNORE.

Eastern Point Lighthouse is a great, must-see spot in Gloucester to watch the sunset and get a great look at Gloucester. You’ll also find access to the break wall which has some of the best spots for fishing in the area. Most importantly, this spot is free despite what the entrance may display. There is a security guard at the entrance to the private road, but they are mainly there during peak beach hours. The houses on this road are impressive and make the drive even more jaw dropping!

A lighthouse with a sea serpent Eastern Point Lighthouse is one of the most famous lights on the east coast. Along with the Portland Head Lighthouse in Maine, this light it is seen everywhere. You can buy coffee mugs, t-shirts, stationary, pet clothes, photographs, socks and even underwear with this lighthouse on them. This light is seen in lots of commercials, TV shows and movies. It’s the haunting lighthouse that was featured in the move The Perfect Storm. The very first light built in this spot was back in 1832 and the present light was constructed in 1890. It was automated in 1985 and still serves as a active aid to navigation. The light is never open but you can get close to it by land. A coast guard family lives in the keepers house and tends the light and area. The keeper’s house is also pretty cool and was built back in 1879. There are also a cool oil house from 1894 and a fog signal added in 1951. This is a treacherous area and has been the graveyard of many, many ships over the years. Rocks, rips and very nasty tides and storms makes navigating around Cape Ann a dangerous task to be sure. Besides all the other fun things to sink a ship a famous sea serpent also roams the area. It was first reported back in 1638 and has been seen and has scared the holy hell out of hundreds of people since. Some think it is just a whale, others aren’t so sure. Sea serpent or whale, it doesn’t matter. This is is still one great Lighthouse. Just something about it looks scream out lighthouse. Look up the words lighthouse in your dictionary and you just might see a pic of this one. A classic that is always a pleasure and honor to see.
