what can I say that others haven’t already??? the portions are extremely ginormous and generous and like the thousands before me, yes, the seafood marinara is AMAZING. i also love that they keep the seasoning very simple and let the fresh seafood speak for itself. their portions are also GINORMOUS I have leftovers for daaayyzzzz… you’re not necessarily going to find a warm and cozy type of service here because they’re SUPER busy but they are very efficient and to be honest as long as no one is rude, i’m satisfied.

Normally, I have rated The Causeway very high. I still do on food. I am giving them 1 star today based on service. We ordered a large take out order. One of the items was a chicken dish. We asked for no pasta or potato. Asparagus was substituted which was fine. When we got home there was no chicken. We understand that mistakes are made. When we called to rectify, instead of an apology and an offer to credit. We were quizzed. Happy Fathers Day!

This place seems to be always full of people, so the wait will be long. But across the street there’s a somewhat nice view of the wetlands so I went there to kill the 45 minute wait. Clam chowder– is AMAZING and has actually a lot of clam in it. Shrimp scampi– it was alright. It just tasted like garlic with a lot of oil. Seafood marinara– the seafood and sauce are great! Not shy on the amount of mussels they give you. But like the shrimp scampi, the actual pasta is okay. It tastes overcooked and I’ve had much better at other Italian restaurants, but you’re here for the seafood anyway right? Fried seafood– how can you go wrong? So food wise, I would honestly give it 3 stars. But I give it 4 because the portions are HUGE. One dish can fill up two people easily! My family had a lot of leftovers for the next day.

Surprisingly delicious. We were driving from Boston to New Hampshire and stopped in here for a late lunch. It’s pretty small inside and seemed to be full with locals(always a good sign). My side caesar salad was way bigger than I was expecting and the lettuce was very fresh. For my lunch, I had the crab cakes and they were pretty good too. I LOVED the creamy coleslaw and had to make myself stop eating it. My parents ordered the clam chowder and fried haddock sandwiches and they really enjoyed both. The clam chowder was hot and creamy and the haddock was cooked well. Not greasy at all. My sister had the chicken gorgonzola with penne and she liked the flavor a lot. My brother in law ordered the twin lobsters. After almost every bite, he mumbled«this is really good» so I’d say he REALLY liked the lobster. It was sweet and delicious. My son ordered the chicken parmesan linguine and it was a giant heaping plate of food! He really liked the flavor, but it was too much to eat. I wish I lived closer so I could eat here often. It was very reasonably priced. The only reason it didn’t get 5 stars was because of the random ant that walked across my silverware and because they didn’t have Coke. We aren’t Pepsi people.

What the beautiful coastal towns on the East Coast do with incredibly fresh seafood is truly a shame! Mostly, two techniques are employed: grilling & frying; with salt being the main, if not the only, seasoning. And Causeway is one of those seafood restaurants. We came on a Sunday for lunch and the place was packed, with many people waiting outside. The dinner menu was served which has a large selection of fried seafood, pasta and some more fried seafood. If you are looking to simply satisfy your hunger, this is the spot. The portions are generous, even the kids’ meals. My bowl of fish chowder had plenty of fish and it tasted fresh. The same can be said about the fish n chips. However if you are like me and want to tickle your taste buds while filling up the tummy, this place will disappoint. Seasoning is very simple and the cooking technique is very limited. I’m not sure if frying is the best technique to bring out the natural flavors of clams, calamari, or scallops, especially with the same breading, but it appears to be the standard New England treatment. Not a place I will make a point to visit again. Nothing against the quality of the food, just not exiting enough for me.

We LOVE this place! Randomly stumbled here on a very random Sunday visiting the area. Here’s what I would recommend: Fish Chowder(HOLYMOLY was that delicious. We were able to share this dish, and tried NOT to get full. The portion on this is A+++. Seafood Marinara… folks, this is where it’s AT! If you’re looking for fresh seafood, deliciously cooked pasta, and a light tomato sauce — you NEED to get this. We shared this dish between two people and was very VERY satisfied! Everything fried here was great! Once we found this place, we came here 3 weekends in a row. Making more trips up here for sure!

As someone who HATES seafood I love Causeway. We have eaten here for years and I have always been able to find something that was delicious. I went here on MDW and although it was packed with an hour and a half wait, the waitresses were awesome and made sure our food ready very quickly. I loved the Greek Salad, I also love the fact that it does not smell fishy!

UGH! I was so excited to come here. Maybe we came at the wrong time with the wrong expectations of what would be on the menu. But, this was too much for a 12pm brunch on a Sunday. The service is fantastic and the mozzarella sticks are good. The clam chowder is very mediocre and the baked scallops were over/underwhelming at the same time. SO. MANY. SCALLOPS. SO. LITTLE. FLAVOR. I will repeat that the wait staff was incredible and so attentive but it doesn’t make up for the mediocre food. This place was however, packed at 12:30pm on a Sunday afternoon so maybe it was us that was wrong!

3 adults for lunch, craving good seafood, having lived in Gloucester in the 90’s, now living in Tucson, AZ. Food exceeded expectations, great onion rings, crispy light batter, portion enough for 3. Clam chowda as good as it gets, cup is more like a bowl. 2 Causeway casseroles: large portion, everything cooked just right, side of asparagus still a bit cruntchy/perfect, served really hot, 1 baked haddock, huge portion, done perfectly as well. Waitstaff friendly and professional. More than a good value given the quality and portion size., price very fair.

This is definitely a locals spot as we had trouble finding a table at lunch. The muscles appetizer would feed four! Our baked scalloped were prepared perfectly. The lunchtime prices are very affordable too. I Highly recommend this local dive for anyone looking for fresh no frills seafood at an affordable price.

I must admit I like to attend this establishment a few times a year. It is known to have the freshest and largest serving of seafood for the price per meal. Our last visit on March 24 was good, not great. I feel as though this is a trend, as each time I eat there the quantity decreases while the price increase. We ordered lobster pie, the peters platter, prime rib(medium rare) and a twin lobster dinner. Every meal was cooked to as ordered and stout. The biggest complaint came from the Peter platter as it was rather disappointing this time around. The majority of this platter was bite size pieces of haddock and calamari. There were only 2 – 3 scallops, about 8 fried clams all of which had non existence bellies, and one had a belly. There were not many shrimp either. I was rather disappointed. Overall due to the trend of less quantity and higher prices, if I do visit again which I most likely will, I will not order the peters platter.

You should eat here! The service was fast, and friendly. The food was fresh and amazing! I ordered fried shrimp and my husband had the jumbo clam strips, our orders arrived quickly and where hot and tasted delicious. If we are ever in the area again we would definitely eat here. The ladies at the business next door were also very friendly and pointed us in the direction of the dock where the boats from the show«Wicked Tuna» would be.

Honestly, this is my favorite seafood restaurant on the North Shore. Every time I go here, the prices are good, the food is great, and the staff have been friendly. I typically get the baked haddock, and its literally heaven on a plate. I’ve also had their clam chowder, onion rings, and fried calamari, all of which is also great. You can’t really go wrong with any of the sides too, though my favorites are the mashed potatoes and green beans when they have them. Every time I am home from college, I make sure to go here. In fact I’m getting hungry for Causeway baked haddock right as I am writing this review! Quick side note: They don’t serve alcohol here HOWEVER you can bring your own alcohol as long as you drink it at the bar and finish it before you leave(Massachusetts has pretty strict open container laws).

If your in Gloucester you must stop by The Causeway. Freshest seafood around! This visit I had the scallops wrapped in bacon appetizer for $ 10. There were 8 scallops perfectly resting on a bend of greens with diced tomatoes and a side of dressing. I also enjoyed their fish chowder which was ok in my book. I prefer a thicker soup and this was very milky with a oil slick of butter floating on top. Tons of fresh fish in the chowder, tasty but not my favorite chowder of all time but still very good. Tiny open concept restaurant inside, very loud but very clean. It’s like breakfast diner meets classy seafood joint!

If you like good old down home local places this is a good one. BYOB means you have the freedom to do as you wish and save money. Calamari was perfect, lobster pot pie was really good — probably close to a pound of meat for $ 27. This is a good deal kind of place. Yes it’s formica tables, cranky locals and no atmosphere but that’s part of what makes it special!

This place is so good, I don’t even know where to start this review. For starters, this place is the real deal as far as Italian and seafood are concerned. My wife and I were told to eat here by a few different friends, so we went and checked it out. Wow. First, they don’t take reservations. You’ll need to be prepared to sit outside in your car for at least 30 minutes minimum — and that’s in the off-peak times. During the meal hours, you’ll easily be waiting for an hour. You walk in and give them your name and number of people in your party, and they’ll put you on their list — first-come first-serve. They’ll give you a ballpark time estimate on the spot as well, which is nice. My wife and I were seated at the counter(no bar — the Causeway is BYOB) right in front of the kitchen. People, it was the best seat in the house — perfect view right into the kitchen. My wife and I were salivating as waitresses took plates and plates of different dishes from the kitchen window. For appetizers, I had a bowl of the fish chowder — excellent. There was a thick slab of haddock in it, extremely fresh and tasty. My wife had the clam chowder; it was just as good as mine. For our meals, I ordered the seafood marinara, and my wife had their shrimp scampi. A quick word about the seafood quality — the highest I’ve ever experienced. My seafood marinara was loaded up with about 25 – 30 mussels, along with huge scallops, shrimp, and calamari(all seafood was steamed/cooked, not fried). It comes in a huge cooking pan with two large handles on the sides — I’ve never seen a bigger entrée dish in my life! It was unbelievably good, to say the least. Also, the portions are huge. Every single one of the pasta dishes can be easily split between two people. My wife and I didn’t know this, so we brought home enough food for two days’ worth of lunch! My brother and I ate here before he went to college a few days ago, and the two of us split the seafood marinara with no problem. This place is unmatched in terms of food quality vs. price. You won’t find a massive pan of seafood marinara loaded up with three pounds of fresh seafood for $ 23 anywhere else. Causeway, you’re my new favorite. Can’t wait to eat there again soon.
