I think maybe you get better service there if you are a man or you’re with a man because the service my friend and I got was not that wonderful. All we ordered was a drink and it took forever to get it, she didn’t come back to ask us if we want anything else, and the place wasn’t that busy

Stopped in for a drink last night before dinner downtown. Best dirty martini in town. Hands down. The little bar snacks they provide are also top notch, salami w/pickles, mixed nuts, and fresh crisps. Great ambiance as well.

Very classy bar, cozy, feels like a secret speakeasy. Waitstaff are attentive, but not obtrusive. Signal for cell phones is almost nonexistent there though(a good thing to be disconnected — not so good if the babysitter is trying to call). This is a «grown folks» bar, don’t expect to be doing shots or dancing on the bar. One of my favorite hidden gems downtown that a lot of people don’t seem to know about. Dressier — jeans seem out of place here, though I’ve seen them a few times.

Whether staying at the Amway Grand or not, the Lumber Baron is a great place to start and end a night out in Grand Rapids. Cozy atmosphere that feels like a study/library in an up-north lodge, subtle but appropriate music, and professional and attentive waitstaff. Don’t come here to order a beer or shots. Come here for a classic cocktail(preferably a brown liquor) and educated conversation. Complimentary snacks are a bonus.

A high-end bar in the Amway Grand Hotel. They focus on mixed drinks, scotches and related drinks. Small cozy space. The Old Fashioned was okay, but a bit strong on the pour. They had only one kind of Rye(Bullet). In speaking with the server, she seemed very proud of their«hard to find» liquors. Maybe of Grand Rapids, but they were all from major distillers. All pretty standard fair in my book. No independent scotches, not craft American whiskeys… Fine for a hotel bar, but not really a destination. They need to up their game.

Great classic bar. I felt like I was back in the old boys club. Smooth leather and plenty of paneled wood. Don’t come for the bud light! Bring you adult friends for a nice after dinner scotch. Great job Tarah and Megan!(and I’m not a regular, first time here)

I’ve had nothing but exceptional service and drinks here. It’s our go to place downtown. They have a jazz night on Thursdays that I think is still going on. It has a very rich and masculine feel to it with carved wood moldings and leather seating. A great place to start or end your night.

Cozy — warm and an all together perfect place to have a late night appetizer.

If you’ve been looking for a clubby historic bar that serves drinks and appetizers in a cozy environment, then the Lumber Baron Bar is for you. Sit in leather club chairs next to the fireplace, surrounded by wood paneled walls and library. Scotch and brandy drinkers rejoice — this is the place to sip a nightcap after the symphony, ballet or theater. I’d make a few suggestions to make it a 5 star joint: add desserts to your menu, turn the lights down lower, and play a little jazz.
