Peju Kitchen

Food is very good when we were finally able to order something off the menu. My friend and I went to this restaurant for her birthday and we were not able to order food we want from the menu. We had to change our order about 5 times in order to eat because «They ran out.» We couldn’t even eat any appetizer because they also ran out of that. Absolutely NO EXCUSE to run out of 90% of what is on the menu at 4:00pm.

We threw a holiday party @ Peju’s for over 100 employees. The party could not have been better. The food, drinks, lighting and music were absolutely incredible. To top it all was the excellent customer service by all their employees. Our employees can’t stop talking about our holiday party, and Peju’s has just won themselves a lot of new customers!

When you are there try jollof rice and the coconut rice with shrimp. It is authentic and convenient. Great service!

When I walked in I was the only patron there which I was really confused but I heard good things so I paid no mind to that. I told them how excited I was to eat there since my dad is Nigerian. I ordered the pounded yam with egusi and okra stew (which had gizzards). At first I ordered 1 but then she said I could have another soup at no additional cost. I was very happy! Then I could also choose 3 meats. I went with the tripe, chicken, and cow feet. As I waited in pretty positive I heard a microwave. But I hoped for the best and ignored it. In maybe 6 mins it was ready so I’m pretty sure something was microwaved. I took my bag to the car I was disappointed to see that there was only 1 piece of tripe, 1 cow foot, and maybe 3 pieces of chicken. Disappointed that I didn’t get any more tripe. The foot was very warm and not very spice which was good. Not what I was use to but it got the job done. I would probably come back!

From the classy atmosphere indoors to the bold customer service, it strikes me as so far the best African restaurant in Maryland. The food is very good (jollof rice, meat, chicken, fish were what my orders consisted of) I haven’t yet experienced any of what the bad reviews are stating.
The setting of this restaurant is so urban for the traditional catering that I would recommend its lounge area for my african friends to throw a gathering or night out at.
Regarding the neutral to negative reviews, My advice to the restaurant staff would be humility in accepting any and every client and his or her varied opinions — I am yet to see a perfect company with no mistakes. But that being said, for me, Peju’s kitchen opinionatedly gets 5 stars.

I didn’t eat here so I can’t speak on the food. The place itself is very nice and clean. My friend had her birthday party here 2 years in a row. Last year it was really nice. She had a big section for her and her guest, food, a flyer to advertise, cupcakes and balloons. tickets were $ 15 in advance and $ 20 at the door. So she said she would always have her party there. This year she had a different promoter First thing the tickets sold in advance were $ 20 or $ 20 at the door. Which really makes no sense. Then all she got was a table that seated 4ppl and a bottle of sutter homes?. She had about 20 guest!!! Then the drinks were $ 10 for a grey goose and pineapple juice and also $ 10 for Amsterdam and pineapple juice. In what world do you pay the same for Amsterdam as you would Goose? But other then that it was ok. Camera man was cool, bar tenders were nice, and the dude that promoted her party the year before was awesome. But she’s not going back next year, and I’ll have no reason to.

I loved the food here. The service is awesome as well. Beware, the food is very spicy, but it’s Caribbean and African food, so that’s what one expects and hopes for.

When you pay $ 12 for lunch and get not so fresh and re-​heated meat makes look past the flavor. Also the fact I pointed it out I didn’t see a sincere apology or a chance to make it right again.
If I wanted reheated food I might look for that in my fridge for leftovers.

Went to Peju’s for my first time during lunch. Tried the jerk chicken and rice for carryout. If you have a bleeding ulcer or high blood pressure, then this dish is not for you. But if you have sinus problems or a deviated septum then its right up your alley! The dang food opened up my sinuses! Sorry, it was just too spicy for me. I cant enjoy my food that way. The rice was very good and moist though. The woman behind the counter had a thick accent. I thought she asked me if I was paying by Visa, but happened to be asking if I was paying for a particular dish that sounded like «Visa», and wound up charging me $ 19 for someone else’s food! She refunded me the difference with cash, of course. The portion of carryout food I was given did not amount to the $ 12.72 I paid. I expected a bit more.

Great décor, very clean and good customer service. Rice dishes were awesom e but the meat tasted old, like it was cooked and frozen then reheated to order.

I feel lied to.
I was looking for a caribbean restaurant to enjoy some good jerk chicken while on my lunch break and this spot was highly recommended. Now I am no expert on caribbean cuisine, however I KNOW good food. I wouldn’t say this establishment is «caribbean» but more African, being that there was only ONE caribbean dish on the menu amongst a sea of African dishes. The atmosphere is nice but the jerk chicken was mediocre. The fried rice was not completely done nor was it home made, the plantains were not cooked/​caramelized enough and the chicken pieces were huge and not tender.
Service was ok and I am sure they cook other dishes well but I would not go looking for Caribbean food.

One of the few places in the Baltimore area serving Nigerian food. It is kinda hard to find the place that is tucked away in a falling apart strip mall next to a Pakistani grocery (Danish foods) and restaurant. On entering it looks like a night club/​lounge but surprsingly serves good carribean and Nigerian food. The fufu (3 different types), egusi, tripe stew and appetisers are tasty and if you like Indian or ethipian food you will like it.

Peju is great for the simple fact that it’s minutes from my home. Literally a 5min drive. I love that fact alone. Convenience aside, this restaurant/​lounge Is pretty cool. I recently came here on a Thursday night for happy hour. I had the baked jerk chicken with fried cabbage and French fries. The chicken was so good, now my spice tolerance is pretty low (I’ve been working on it these past few years) so after about 3 wings my nose was running and eyes watering. That didn’t take away from the taste, that just goes to show I’m a wimp when it comes to spicy foods. I decided on a baileys on the rocks, simple drink to make (open bottle pour over ice) so my drink was perfect.
The music was ok the DJ played top 40 urban music with a few underground sets I really couldn’t get with. But hey to each it’s own. The set up in Pejus is very stylish the restaurant and lounge are both sexy sophisticated (I watch a lot of HGTV) Deep Reds, Golds and black decorate both sides of Pejus, with dark rich hardwood floors throughout. That staff is very friendly even on those busy Saturday night when 30 people are at the bar clamoring for attention. I will say I do try to avoid this spot on a late Saturday the clientele can be a bit immature at times. I do however appreciate there zero tolerance for inappropriate behavior. If your out and about in the Woodlawn area of Baltimore Co. check Pejus out there west indies food is very delicious and the atmosphere is very nice.

This is review is for the Lounge —
I was invited here for a friend’s birthday bash on a Saturday evening. First thought upon arrival in the parking lot, is this place legit? It’s located at a rundown stripmall somewhere past Ellicott.
But to my surprise as I walked in (and being the Token Asian) that this place is very laid out. Décor was nice, people friendly, and bartender made the mixes well.
Drink prices were $ 10 for ciroc or goose and bull, 4 for imports. They also had food, most folks ordered wings and fries. Those were $ 9 but it came in a nice sized portion.
The music was pretty good. Mostly Hip Hop/R&B and a few dance tracks.
Overall a nice establishment and a place I would go out to again. Black n’ Yellow x2

My brother worked in Nigeria for a year with the Army and wanted to show us what the food was like. While I’ve heard the Jerk Chicken at Peju’s is good, we went for the Nigerian food instead. The inside of the place is really nice — especially in comparison to the kind of run down strip mall it’s in. The people were really nice there, and we were kind of sad that there weren’t more people there.
The Nigerian food was an experience. You get a bowl with water to wash your hands and then you choose from a starch (we all liked the pounded yam best) which is a grapefruit sized ball of doughy stuff. You also order a «soup» to go with it, which is like meat with sauce and some veggie stuff. Then you take some of the pounded yam, form it into a little spoon and scoop up the sauce and meat. All in all, it was DELICIOUS and something fun to try. We all got different starches and soups and then shared. We’re definitely going back again!

I decided to try this place just to try something new. I’ve been here before to partay but never to eat. It’s pretty nice inside, but there was no one there! It kinda sucks because it’s a pretty chill place.
So I ordered the jerk chicken and a side of jollof rice. The chicken had a good spice, the rice and plantain were good as well. Definitely going back.

My husband wanted African food and after a quick google search, I found Peju’s. We looked at their webside (very nice) and called before going there on Memorial Day (May 30, 2011). It was almost 100 degrees outside and I was so happy they had the A/​C blasting. The place is beautifully decorated (and did not look like the typical Caribbean/​African joint). The only downside about Peju’s is that it is in a shopping center that does not get a lot of traffic.
The lady behind the counter was EXTREMELY nice and accommodating. I am very picky (especially about ethnic food). She answered all my questions and even gave me a sample before I ordered. I ended up getting a combination platter with one piece of beef/​one piece of curry chicken and jollof/​fried rice. (Jollof rice is a tomato and tomato paste based rice). The beef was DELISH and the sauce/​stew was perfectly seasoned. The curry chicken was just okay. I felt it should have been chopped up or saucy to be really be curry. My husband ordered the beef. Both dishes came with fried plantains. We both ordered the small plate. The portion was very generous and my husband finished all of his food and he ate what I could not finish.
I would like to go back for the live bands they have on the weekend. We will definitely go back.
