I have lived in Coles Point for several years now and have always enjoyed the food at the Tavern. I especially like the local seafood they offer from Rockfish Subs to their decadent Crab Dip. Thanks for all your efforts Chris and Anne. See you Soon! Chris K

Finally made it out here for lunch. The owner is a great guy. Had the tavern mac. One of the best burgers I’ve had in a long time. It’s a small kitchen so I can see when they’re busy you might have to wait a bit for your food. So what. The wait would be worth it. The place feels like home and the view is terrific.

I’ve read the other reviews and well, they are all pretty much spot on. The one stars have a point and the five stars are right on as well. The Tavern is one of the crown jewels of the Redneck Riviera along the Lower Potomac River. It is in fact located in Maryland but is only accessible by car from Virginia but don’t let that fool you, if there’s a problem the Virginia cops will be there in a heartbeat. You can buy lottery tickets, play keno, video horses and tear off cards. They serve and sell hard liquor by the bottle(can’t do that in Virginia) Cole’s Point Tavern is nye on around 50 years old now depending on who you ask. It’s walls and pilings have weathered hurricanes, Nor’easters, ice flows, pretty much everything that mother nature has thrown at it and it still stands. In a heavy wind or heavy seas it will rock a little bit. When there is country line dancing it will rock a lot. It looks like it’s going to fall down but hasn’t yet. There is a new deck from the shore to the front door and it’s a pretty upscale addition. The view from the East deck towards Ragged Point is better than the view from any other restaurant on the Rivah. It’s shaded in the late afternoon/early evening. Sunsets from the front deck are spectacular. The tourists always stop to snap photos of the sunset. You’ll find neighbors from the point, waterman, locals, bikers(nice bikers), families, young people, boaters, a pretty broad mix all for the most part having a good time. The food is excellent and fresh, the crab cake sandwich has to be the Best on the Bay and is huge. Burgers are good, the fish is local fresh and the portions are large. Every so often they run a special and it is always good. The menu tops out at $ 20 with most in the $ 10 range. The beer and mixed drinks are all priced on the low side of average. There is a jukebox that plays about a 100,000 songs and you can access it from an app on your device. Yes, sometimes it takes a while to get served, especially big parties, and when it gets really busy. It has happened that a table will get missed for a while. If you are in a hurry or expect fine dining then you are going to the wrong place. If you are looking for fast service you’ll have to drive down to Warsaw to the MacDonald’s or perhaps the Art of Coffee in Montross but neither of those serve beer with lunch.

Have eaten at the Tavern several times since they opened this year and have been impressed with the food and atmosphere. Burgers are huge as is the fish hoagie. The Chesapeake fries are fantastic! Wife and I look forward to our next visit!

We heard good things about this place, and, since it’s the only place around, we thought we’d give it a try. Alas, try we did not. After waiting nearly 20 minutes for someone to take our order, we left without a bite, an order placed, or even a glass of water served. During our wait two waitresses told us they would be right with us or someone would be by to take our order. One of those waitresses came back to tell us Jocelyn would be our waitress — progress? A third waitress, Jocelyn, arrived only to tell us she, too, would be right back. She then went to another table, serviced them, walked by us, and proceeded to chat with a patron for three minutes(we were timing things at this point thinking we would find some humor in it. We did not). At that point we didn’t feel like Jocelyn or any of the wait staff we looked lovingly at were interested in our table of six hungry and thirsty patrons. At least they had bathrooms.

If you want the Best Local Seafood and a REAL Crab Cake then the Tavern is for you. If you expect fine linens, silver ware, and fancy… then don’t go. This Restaurant over the water(legally Maryland) would be the Cover for Best Dives in America! Service can be slow at times because the food is MADETOORDER and the Kitchen is on the small side, so sit back, have a drink, meet some great folks, both locals and«Come-Heres» and enjoy remarkable views of the Potomac River and the Best Sunsets north of Key West. Great Burgers, Steaks, and if on the«Specials» menu Seafood Pizza with jumbo shrimp, scallops, and crab. Remember, this is a casual and comfortable place and your patience will be rewarded by GREAT food and a wonderful Northern Neck one of a kind experience.

My favorite place for lunch round these parts. You can get there /here by boat or car and the trip is worth it because the people are nice, friendly and welcoming whether you’re local or a «come here». The rockfish sandwich is one of the best I’ve had because it is locally caught, and Chris is a great cook. You can’t go wrong with anything on the menu.

Historic place on the Potomac. The food has gotten better over the years. Because it’s on the Potomac, it’s considered a Maryland establishment and has a liquor store.

Welcome back Coles Point Tavern! We were glad to see you re-open for the 2015 season! As the first diners of the season we can’t complain… the staff and owner were friendly and ready to serve. It was a breezy day but we couldn’t pass up sitting outside with the view of the water. Beer, burgers and fries — the perfect combination for a Saturday afternoon. Fries were the same as last year — we had them loaded — tasty but a little greasy and limp. The burgers on the other hand were really good. Perfectly cooked — juicy, fresh and the buns were awsome! Couldn’t have picked a better place for a burger and a beer on the water! We’re glad to have another option for the season and look forward to coming back by boat over the next few months as well.

Beautful day to be on the water yesterday. Went by boat for lunch. Fortunately the breeze was downriver so easy to tie off. My wife and and I each had rockfish bites, hers broiled mine fried. Both orders were plentiful and very tasty. Orders came with fresh cucumber slices or pickle. I added fries to my order which were very good. A couple sitting near us ordered a sub which they shared and was loaded with meat. Good and friendly service. An original restaurant with loads of character. Lovely dining on the deck overlooking the four mile wide Potomac River. Travelled past here by boat many times over the years and didn’t know what we were missing.

Well… long story short, our order never got put in after 2 hours of waiting. We left to go somewhere else. It seemed the manager was yelling at waitresses and the waitresses were hung over from the night before(4th of July). I doubt I would try this place again. Montross is only a 15 minute drive away with a great couple restaurants there. Skip the wait and potentially(what looked like) greasy food.
