I am a rather young person so I’m used to getting weird looks when I walk into an antique store. I’ve grown up my whole life with antique furniture in my room and throughout my house so I’m accustomed to the«look don’t touch» rule that so often comes along with them. I know that old antique store owners are often protective of their merchandise, as they should be. However, there is no excuse for how I was just treated when I shopped at Calico Mall. The two old ladies who own it stereotyped me immediately when I walked through their doors. Apparently Nike shorts and tennis shoes aren’t appropriate articles of clothing to wear to their store. I honestly wanted to purchase some items from this store, but the owner told me that the record that I was interested in was not priced, that I could not buy it, and that I needed to basically leave her store. I had plenty of money to spend in the Calico Mall. However, I will not give my business to someone who doesn’t think I’m good enough to even look at let alone buy their antiques. There are plenty of other antique shops.

This used to be a favorite spot. There were vendors and lots of great stuff… then the stalker lady bought it all-no more vendors as a rule. I don’t mind stashing my purse, it’s actually convenient, but I do mind being followed around by a paranoid owner. A friend and I stopped in one morning to browse-we were followed around by the owner, she would pop up around a corner watching our every move. If we showed interest in anything she tried to force us to purchase with some grand story. I saw an old clock I liked and as she was in my face I asked her about it. It had a price and I told her I wanted it. She stammered about wanting to have it cleaned and the inner workings checked and promptly raised the price by over $ 100 while we stood there. I told her I would take it as is. She took the price off and refused to sell it. That has happened before with items not marked. This lady needs to retire from service. Aside from her age, she is blind, unkept, smelly and just plain scary. She has ruined the Calico Mall!

They have a great collection of antiques here, its worth taking a look. As with any store some things are reasonable and some are overpriced.

This is a unique mall with lots of treasures. Like the previous poster, I am a dealer and often drive a truck to out of town stores to purchase furniture. I seldom ask for a discount, always pay cash and am a generally pleasant person. The owner of this store sits on a stool at the front desk and makes everyone that enters put their purse in a locker. Throughout the store, she has many items that are often not priced. She requires her employees to come to her for a price when a customer asks and I felt like she was sizing me up before she’d give a price. I was paying for my items and my husband started to the car with a $ 20 underwood typewriter and she stopped him and said«sir, where are you going with that.» I won’t be back. Too untrusting and unfriendly for me. Plenty of other neat places to purchase antiques in Hattiesburg.

I love you Calico Mall! This was a staple of my teenage years to find interesting vintage costume jewelry, hats, and clothes. Walking through all the rooms and floors is always a treat; it feels like you’re on a treasure hunt. A lot of great vintage furniture, knick-knacks, bedding, clocks, books and dishes. There’s rooms full of dolls, paintings, and clothes. The pricing is kind of all over, since there’s multiple sellers. Some things are high, but others are reasonably priced. Next time you’ve got a lazy day, head on down to Calico Mall to meander though and maybe find some buried treasure!
