I could’ve sworn I’d been here way back in the day and it was simply called«Jay’s» Fish & Chips. I guess a birth in the family occurred since then, hence the warranted name edit. This place is incredibly divey. Somewhat shady area, next to a shady Walgreens. Iffy parking lot(don’t park back there). Funny yet weird interior(there’s an acoustic guitar in the corner just chilling). So how can this earn a fiver, you say? It is simply in their fry technique, and since this is a fish fry house, it trumps all other factors. First this is a mom/pop operation. Pop does all the frying. He is diligent and a task master. He will not rush and serve subpar items. Everything I’ve gotten here has been spot on executed properly. Fish always hot. Batter always crisp and light. Even the fries, which are frozen, is fried in a way that it will stay crispy for my whole meal. I also always eat in, cuz I don’t want the travel to affect the quality of the fry. They have several fishes to choose from. They even have an English batter and a cornmeal style breading, so you can call your shot. But if you don’t specify, it will probably be the batter. Skip the cod(Pollack) here. It is too average, with the choices you have. Salmon is actually pretty good. Thin but wide slices. Salmon is meaty in texture, pretty good with their unique tartar sauce, which has little to no relish but gets its tang from mustard. The main star for me is the filet of sole. Best fish and chips I’ve ever had. And I’ve been to more brew pubs than you can shake a stick at. None as solid as this. The fish is super delicate, so the crisp batter really shines. Salt and vinegar wants in, so don’t be shy, it is on all the tables. Not in the mood for fish. Their fried chicken wings are quite special. Super crisp exterior, it will crackle in your head. Seasoning is simple, like seasoned salt, nothing spicy. So I always use the thin hot sauce on the tables that is similar if not Trappey’s. Quintessential soul food. There’s still many things I haven’t tried yet, onion rings, catfish(cornmeal for sure with this), and fried zucs and shrooms. But judging from what I’ve had, it should not disappoint. Thanks Uncle for staying true to the craft, you in my always hungry eyes, are an artist. An artist who deals in molten fat. Respect! *cRuNCh*

So good no complaints. The fish was so flaky and I was sad when it was gone because it is so good. No regrets.

Bar none the worst most incredibly rude service. The woman working the counter hates your guts the second you walk in. Forget that you plan to buy food for your office and intend to spend over $ 100, they will look at your credit card as if you just offered them a fresh turd. «No Credit Card!» she yelled. So I turn to leave and she calls me back, saying she will accept it «just one time», and coughs without covering her mouth. I attempt to offer my order, which has been written down(I had my co-workers consult the menu so it was easy for everyone, and we work in food service so the order was clear and easy). I am told«No, not available» for every order. even though everyone paid attention to the combo rules, and all added in for a 18% tip. So, basically Uncle Jay’s refused my order and made up a new one. with stuff we never ordered(the hushpuppies are gross and the oysters are from the can, squishy and tasteless). Then I am told again I have to pay cash. I don’t care if they coat their fish in gold, NEVERGOTHERE. If they are that rude at the counter, imagine how they treat what you plan to eat.

They let a criminal use a duplicate of my credit card for a charge of $ 47.13 on February 14, 2016 without checking his identification. Beware of this business; they let a criminal steal money from me and they do not use the basic and necessary anti-fraud steps to protect the public.

I’ve been wanting to try this since there are so few good fish and chips around Hayward. This was not the place. Drab décor, woman behind counter seemed in a bad mood, no greeting, no thank you after order. When I placed my order for fish and chips, no pleasantries, just pointed at sign and said«how many»? Fish was average at best and calamari was way over-priced. This was a 1 — time visit, I won’t be returning.

We decided to have some fish and chips… The wife had seen a few reviews of Jays. On the spur of the moment we decided to try this place. Not fancy, but clean. The staff is attentive and there was(on a Monday evening) a steady stream of «to goes» and families in and out. We ordered two dinners… Mine was two shrimps and two fish fillets with chips. The wife had two oysters and two fish fillets with chips. There is no alcohol on site for sale… And for me that is good. As a trained chef I can say the food was«fresh»… The food was prepared in «fresh oil»(it actually smelled fresh) and the chef was very attentive to his craft and participated in their preparation… Checking for doneness and color. Loved it. Parking may be an issue… Small parking lot and I found that as we came from the South on Foothill, we had to go around the block to gain access. Access is plainly marked and once aligned, easy to gain access. The price is right, the food prep is excellent and the taste is top notch!!!

Uncle Jays has been on my Unilocal Bookmark list for a little while. After watching the Playoff games I was a little Hungry and Craving Seafood lol. My Ankle Bracelet was fully Charged so I jumped into my Whip and rolled to Uncle Jays. Uncle Jays has their own parking lot in the rear of the Restaurant. This is where I stashed my Whip. I rolled in to Uncle Jays and was pleasantly surprised. It was nicely decorated, Their Menu is quite extensive. So I perused it for a while. Uncle Jays is a Family Owned and Operated place a Asian Husband and Wife team own it. I talked to one of the Owners Jenny. She is very Quality Conscious about her Food and Business. Jenny and her Husband the Cook have been in the Restaurant Business for years . Jenny’s Husband the Cook is a Trained Sushi Chef . I ordered the 9 Piece Fish Combo off the Specials Board, Jenny let me substitute the Chips for Beer Battered Union Rings. My Fish of Choice was Catfish. You can have your fish English Battered Fried or Southern Soul Food Corn Meal Fried. I opted for English Battered Fried for a Change of Pace and Flavor . Uncle Jays has a Cozy Dining area. There is a Fireplace with a Wood Schooner on the Mantle, Video Game, Coffee Station, Surveillance Monitor so you can watch your Car and your Six . There are 8 Tables to Dine at and 4LCD TVs for Entertainment . My Fish and Onion Rings were done 10 minutes later. They were Perfectly Fried not Oily or Greasy. The Catfish Fillets were good sized and tasted good . There were Condiment Stations on each Table — Malt Vinegar, Hot Sauce, Siracha, Salt and Pepper. Jenny brought me a Tangy Tasty Tartar Sauce. It Complimented the Catfish very nicely . Canned 12 ounce sodas are a Dollar a piece. I ended up taking 4 Catfish Fillets To Go because my Eyes were Bigger Than my Belly LOL. Service is Friendly and Fast . Uncle Jays also serves Hamburgers, Teriyaki Chicken and Beef also. I’m a Fan !!! I will definitely return.

Uncle Jays is a gem of a treasure to hold in Hayward, Ca. If you are searching for that fried fish come on down. It is cooked to order and to perfection. If you wish to turn it upside down try the the Korean BBQ. The sides are many and reasonable. A little hint, if you become a regular it would not be a surprise, if they surprise You with a little extra in your order. The people are great and service is good.

Uncle Jay’s looks basically the same as Jay’s, just a few more flatscreens have been added. menu: fish & chip, teriyaki, burgers. fish can be english battered fried or cornmeal fried. eats: 2 piece catfish & chip(6.99) –4 average pieces, no fish taste, batter thin. fish moist. –fries the previously frozen mushy kind, not a fan. lots provided. takeouts: –remember to get ur own sauces, napkins, they only provided tartar sauce. –pollock is marketed as cod. the 2 are not similiar. pollock is a cheap fish, cod expensive. –fish optionsL pollock, salmon, sole, catfish, oyster, scallop, calamari. 2,5 stars for average fish.

I have been 3 times, so I must like it! I ordered the catfish all 3 times but you have to specify if you want corn meal or battered. I have had both and prefer the corn meal, it is seasoned really well. I always call in my order and its always ready.

Wonderful fast food spot, offering traditional British-style fish and chips, or cornmeal breaded fish, or a few oriental dishes for those not in the mood for seafood. And what great fish and chips it is — perfectly breaded, mild seasoned, with malt vinegar available as well as a tangy tartar sauce. Prices are very reasonable, portions generous. Your choice of fish varieties! The place is spotless, a half-dozen or so tables and three flat screen televisions to enjoy while waiting for your cooked-to-order fish & chip, or while dining. A vast improvement over the shack that had been here. Credit cards accepted. Welcome to the neighborhood — best chippery we’ve tried in the East Bay!

Came here because I had a taste for fish and chips– catfish to be exact. I haven’t been to this place in years– as I noticed the new name and grand opening sign. The prices are reasonable and the food seem to be the perfect portion. I dined in and enjoyed my catfish and chips. Drinks are way too high– so if you don’t want to pay almost 3 dollars for a snapple, your always welcomed to walgreens right next door!

The place is a shell of what it used to be. The food tastes heavier and more greasy. Ownership changed and it makes a difference. Before the fish was flaky. I bit into the food it was just grease. Service was okay but food takes a nose dive. Off to find my new fish and chips joint. Any recommendations?

First time to try after the new owners have taken over. I noticed the restaurant has been remodeled and looks clean and nice. I ordered the three piece cod fish n’ chips and it was delicious! It wasn’t over battered and the fish tasted fresh will definitely come back again!
