Clos Du Bois has some very nice chardonnays. I am not a fan of white wines — but Clos Du Bois has some very good ones. «Buttery» is the word they use which describes the better chardonnays they offer. A wine that tastes like butter? Who can say that is a bad wine? The tasting room is spacious and it’s always cool and fresh inside. Lots of light and some very nice cookbooks and such that will be a delight to anyone who has a love of food. There is a picnic area — but it’s not«amazing» like other places. It lacks«country charm» and is more like a small town park with regimented picnic tables, trash cans and a nice view of the tasting room, parking lot and the distant grape fields. Not bad. We had a bottle of cooled chardonnay with our brie and it was quite enjoyable! Helen joined the wine club there, so Sofie and I are always returning to pick up her wine and do a tasting. Tastings are free for people who pick up the wine of the people who belong to the clubs. Tip: If you have kids, try and get them join lots of wine clubs so you can pick their wine and get free tastings… and occasionally pinch a bottle of wine from their box. This book has some crazy good recipes for non-traditional jams. I made one using tomatoes that Sofie«must have» every time I serve eggs at breakfast. It has a lot of cumin with a pinch of cayenne in it.(I think that’s the key to what makes it work.) Take your kids to this place — maybe you’ll get lucky and one of them will spring for a copy for you!

Some close friends accepted our invitation for a winery picnic day. The hunt was on to find the perfect spot near Healdsburg on a BUSY Sonoma County weekend. We stopped by Clos du Bois to buy a bottle of wine and were so completely impressed by their picnic grounds we changed our plans to go out to Preston Winery picnic grounds. Clos du Bois was clean, shady or sunny, had cool tables and benches, and was completely pleasant… I could go on. We had a fabulous time. Oh, and when we wandered out to Preston, it was closed with no notice on their website.
