The candy selection was good… had it not all been STALE! Get a clue people, candy can’t sit forever without being rotated!

I have a friend who raves about this place, so when I was in town, I decided to drop in and pick up some for a gift. I was here the morning of Sunday, May 15th. I have to say, it had been a long, long time since I had had this kind of customer service. The women behind the counter, glared at me, rolled her eyes at me and gave me attitude the entire time. I honestly cannot remember the last time I encountered someone so miserable and unfriendly. I will never return to this chocolate shop again. You’re better off walking over to Powell’s across the street for your candy needs.

This is exactly what the name evokes, a Main Street USA-type of sweets shoppe focused on handmade chocolates. And the only reason Jamie W. and I stopped in was because I saw a sign for sugar-free chocolates. A dicey proposition, I know, but how could I resist a place that makes eight different kinds — almond bark, raspberry creams, plain creams, cherry cordials, fudge meltaways, mints, caramels, and the one I couldn’t resist, toffees(see photo). And how did they taste? Well, the texture was spot-on. They reminded me of Almond Rocas — even though these were a bit flakier when you bit into them. But other than the nuts, they were understandably bland. Not much on flavor even though a diabetic can rejoice that such a «sweet» has been attempted with such visual flair. Are they worth it? Hmmm, be my guest… they’re about a buck a piece. Gee, whatever happen to penny candy?

Oh, how I miss coming here as a 12-year-old and running around the small(but diverse) collection of Australian licorice and Jelly Bellies and gummy pumpkins. I love this place because candy is sold in bulk and by weight, and unlike Powell’s they cater more to both kids and the more savvy adult. I’ve met Deborah, the owner, a few times and she’s always kind and smiling whether you buy $ 3 or $ 30 from the shop. Handmade chocolates seem to be this place’s specialty, whereas other nearby places import from overseas(lame!), which is one of the main reasons I’ll return. Another plus — the stock is always fresh, and new things come in all the time!
