Love the Philly Cheesesteak sandwiches… my favorite. i get extra cheese, grilled onions and their fire sauce. I read another review that said«if it ain’t broken, don’t fix it». True when it comes to the french fries and ranch dressing, although I think they went back to the original ranch, they should go back to the original fries too. The steak sandwiches are wonderful, sometimes a hit and miss if you get someone new making it which they seem to have a lot of employee turnover there, adding the perfect amount of seasoning on the meat is the KEY. I can barely finish a 6″ sandwich. anything more is possible over eating.

Great Spot for Sandwiches. Fries are great. Everything is hot and tasty Free Peanuts is very cool. Cheapest beer in town… If anyone still drinks beer. And that babe up front works her ass off… She rocks. Please Please Please make me believe you clean the place… Keep it up… Big Mike’s…Your killing it. Although with how much my BFF Biff spends and consumes in there a week, you should give everybody a raise. MH

Had a great sandwich from Big Mike’s Philly Steaks. Grilled Chicken, Mushroom, Tomato, Grilled Onions, Hot Sauce, Melted American Cheese, on Scooped Bread and pressed like a Panini. It was so simple but all these simple ingredients work so well together. In a day and age when a lot of places think it’s cool if you don’t know what ingredients you are eating. Keep It Simple Stupid still rings true.

This is only the second time I’ve eaten at this place. Over all the food IS good but I feel their portions are too small for what you pay for. I don’t do bread so I just ordered the meat, cheese and peppers. It was OVER11 dollars for an average pile of steak. And it doesn’t come with any fries or anything. I literally had a styrofoam container with just meat.(Which is what I ordered) but I feel it should have been a lot more for 11 dollars… Sooooo here is the bad part… from the front of the counter(where I was ordering) I could see this chunk of beef just sitting all exposed on the sink… like I instantly felt a bit uncomfortable about the meat sitting out like that. No idea how long it had been sitting out. Not saying it’s been hours or something because I didn’t know… but it wasn’t even in a container or covered or anything… I did NOT like the idea of seeing a dead cow laying out in the open… I could see it sitting on the cutting board on the sink and I just thought… Germs, Germs, and more Germs… I still ate it and didn’t get sick but the whole thing was not appetizing.

**UPDATED10/11/15** Well, this just went from one of my favorite places in Hermosa, to one I will rarely visit. The new«Philly Pub & Grille» is a shell of what Big Mike’s was, and sadly the changes are mostly sudden. They still offer inexpensive beer(tho the prices have gone up slightly) and they still specialize in cheesesteaks. However, now, they only have cheesesteaks. They’ve removed 75% of their menu offering. No more meatball sub, no more chicken parm, no cold subs or hot Italians here, just variations of cheesesteaks. They’ve always made a killer cheesesreak, but somehow the quality seems worse as they try to rebrand. The buffalo fries on the side were depressing as well. By cutting the menu that drastically, you’d think they’d have perfected the items they do offer, but it’s just not the case. I WASDISAPPOINTEDENOUGHTHAT I ENDEDUPGOINGTOSUBWAY. Big Mike’s is losing business to subway, what happened? The service has always been great and everyone there seemed as confused about the new changes as myself. I was looking forward to enjoying a sandwich and beer here throughout the football season, but I just don’t see that happening anymore. Last note– they even put a terrible quality«phill pub» screen printed sign over the beautifully hand painted«Big Mike’s» artwork. It’s like they want no part of their former selves. ************************************** Meatball sub is amazing… Cheesesteaks and fries are great too. Also not a bad spot if you’re craving a hot dog. Beers on tap now for $ 4, great place overall

I brought my husband here for the first time. He hated ever last bite of his delicious sub. This place is simply the best. great workers and Big Mike is the greatest. Garlic Fries are a must!!! I’m glad the food is still as good as it was 14 years ago.

I love Big Mikes! I have lived in Hermosa Beach for 20 years and for 20 years my sons and I have eaten at big Mike’s! It is consistently delicious! I really love the new bar! My eldest son and I meet there once a week for dinner after work and enjoy a beer while watching a game together. My favorite is the chicken cheesesteak(no steak involved) just tender chicken, melty yummy cheese and grilled onions!

4.5 — Good hearty sandwiches. Service is always nice and prompt. I usually get salads(which were on the menu once upon a time) but the sandwiches are huge, even for the ½ size. I’ve only had hot sandwiches and salads here so cannot attest to the cold sandwich options but the beef Philly is good. Hint: I believe they use a cheese-wiz or something of its nature. I really feel this is critical info because I hate that stuff do not want it ruining my food. The philly is great without but you may be able to add cheese from their cold sandwich options if needed. Recently remodeled and now they have two TVs and counter seating inside. The lack of 5th star was due to a hair in the last salad I had. I’ve eaten all over the world and accidents happen. I’ve gone back since but still felt I had to explain.

Great meatball sandwich!!! The meatball tasted delicious, wasn’t dry and the sauce was great as well. I also had a taste of my wife’s steak sandwich with grilled onions and it was amazing! I hate any kind of onion and with the taste of this sandwich I totally ignored them haha great spot! The beer was COLDTOO!!! 10 dollar deal sounded great for next time.

My husband said this was the best Philly Cheesesteak he’s ever had, and he’s had a lot! He got it with wiz and grilled onions. I shared his garlic parmesan fries. They are suuuper garlic-y, but good! Just be careful about breathing in anyone’s face. Minus 1 star for being a little pricey. A sandwich and fries came out to just under $ 14.

Big Mike’s is a staple of lunchtime fare for me. Not truly authentic but yet very tasty Philly Cheese Steak and Chicken Phillies. I get the cheese and mushroom and ask them to load on the hot peppers. The sandwiches here are a bit different from the other stores, no 6÷12÷18 inch choices, i miss the choice for 12 but the 8 inch sandwiches are probably on better bread. If I need a little extra to fill me up, I might grab a Chili Cheese Fry Dog. Garlic fries are also a winner. The new remodel did take some of the local feel out of the place. I don’t like having to ask for refills on drinks. But the food is good and reasonably quick and service is friendly. The loyalty cards make for good value too

My two sons used to live in Hermosa and I went there many times during my visits there. My sons ate there several times a week and considered it a «go to» spot to take friends and have a great meal. Each time I am in Hermosa, i swing by and always get the best Philly steak around. The entire menu is great and you can’t go wrong with the salads or wraps either. The service is friendly and they seem joyful about their work. Even after a year, they remember us when we walk in and you see the same employees. What a great sandwich shop. I’ve also been to the El Segundo shop and it is terrific as well. Big Mikes – hit it up.

Probably my favorite meal in town! Big Mike’s cheesesteak is on point. A twelve inch sandwich will only set you back about ten bucks, which is a steal given how much meat they pack into these sandwiches. Being from New Jersey and frequently having traveled to Philly for cheesesteak adventures, I consider myself a cheesesteak expert. Big Mike’s offers one of the best cheesesteaks outside of Philly itself. Great bread, tons of meat and Cheez Whiz make this a must try! Other hoagies are great as well if you are an East Coast transplant. In fact, I’ve never had a bad meal here so you are probably safe no matter what you are ordering. Food comes quick, prices are cheap. Definitely a great place to stop at.

I found out about Big Mike’s from the Unilocal Monocle on my iPhone while I was in the area with friends. We were looking for a place we could all agree to eat, and this was the place! I’m a fan of Phillys, but when I heard there was a buffalo chicken sandwich, I had to try it out! It was amazing! I regret not finishing the sandwich, because It was just too much for my appetite. If you’re around the Hermosa area, and are looking for a great place to grab lunch, this is the place to go!

Yum! Such a hole in a wall, but a pretty darn good one. The place is small and hot, and even looks a little dirty, but the food was delicious. They have a variety of Philly cheese steaks, sandwiches, pizza, French fries, etc. You get your food relatively quickly and it’s SO worth every penny! I couldn’t even finish my six inch Hawaiian chicken(which is the smallest size). We sat at the bar next to where they make the food, and it was a little weird. You’re literally looking straight into where they cook and clean. I think the only thing they need to fix about this place is the overall look and layout, otherwise everything else is up to par! The walls are covered with pictures of celebrities that have visited, etc. it was pretty packed and they had a lot of regulars coming in and out. Overall great experience! Can’t wait to go back and try a different Philly cheese steak! :p

The hubby and I had a hankering for some philly cheesesteaks! And after much research, we decided to hit the beach and pick up some sandwiches on the way! We ordered a couple of cheesesteaks with lettuce, tomato and provolone cheese… and they were. absolutely heavenly! Others have commented on their cheesesteaks being ‘dry’ but just add extra cheese people! Thatll guarantee an end result of an ooey-goey classic cheesesteak sandwich! This sandwich was flavorful and the roll was spot-on! Add an order of garlic cheesefries and youll instantly feel transported back to Reading Terminal Market! So great to have a place where you can get a little piece of the east coast, here on the west coast… I am definitely a fan! :)

Having never been a huge fan of the Philly Cheesesteak sandwich, I was caught in a quandary when Thomas N. asked me to find a cheesesteak sandwich shop. How can I possibly make a recommendation for something I really don’t care for? That’s were Unilocal fills the gap nicely. I’m guessing my lack of fondness spawns from not having a very good version of this sandwich. My only prior encounter involved Philly’s Best. If that was literally Philly’s best, then I’ll pass. But when I searched and noticed Big Mike’s Philly Steaks & Subs(BMPSS) 4.5 star rating, I knew I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to expunge the bad memory. Parking is primarily curbside metered parking. BMPSS sports a rather extensive menu of subs, hoagies, and dogs that will easily overwhelm you. Don’t let your eyes wonder! If you stay on point and remember that you’re there for the cheesesteaks, you’ll simplify your life! For the health conscious, you can opt for Healthy Style sandwich which entails the same hollowed out roll, but no oil and sparse use of cheese. I so desperately wanted to order a cheesesteak, but the n00b that I am never knew Philly Chicken Cheese sandwiches existed, so I opted for the footlong Healthy Style Philly Chicken Cheese Sandwich. And to cancel out the health benefits of that sammie, I also ordered a Border Dog. We shared Garlic Parm Fries. Border Dog: 3⁄5 This dog is exactly what you’re thinking: Bacon wrapped with grilled onions, bell peppers, and jalapeños. Why only 3 stars? While I loved the soft bun, grilled veggies, and snap of the dog, I felt the bacon did not contribute much to the over all flavor. Actually, I thought this was overall quite bland. The spicy kick from the grilled jalapeños was most enjoyable. Healthy Style Philly Chicken Cheese Sandwich: 5⁄5 Wow! I frickin’ loved this! I wouldn’t mind having one of these every single day for the rest of my life! There was no skimping on the amount of super moist chicken in this sammie. I had to use a fork to eat all the chunks of chicken that fell out. This sammie was so awesome that I’d contemplate never trying their cheesesteak! Garlic Parm Fries: 4⁄5 If you love garlic, then you certainly can’t miss out on these fries. I’m actually digging these more than the ones at Gordon Biersch. The abundance of garlic added a wonderful spice. Although I love parmesan cheese, I think I prefer these fries sans cheese. If you have an incredible craving for a cheesesteak or chicken cheese sandwich, you have to head over to BMPSS. What’s more, you may want to take their Man vs. Sandwich Challenge. All you have to do is eat 36″ of sandwich! ;)
