Matsu Japanese Restaurant

Can’t believe I didn’t give Matsu 5 stars the first time around??? This place is the best in the business, plain and simple. Staff is attentive, food is fresh and the owners are incredibly friendly.

Best sushi around. I’ve gotten sushi and other items off the menu from Matsu several times and it’s been great every time!

After eating Matsu both in restaurant and take out quite a number of times now it is time to review. Inside Matsu the environment is very clean, modern, and cozy. The service is very good and staff is very accommodating checking on us and how our food was regularly. As an appetizer we both had a clear soup and s small salad. The clear soup we both agree has very little flavor in comparison of other places we have dined. However the salad is fresh and the ginger dressing is one of the best we have had. My girlfriend tends to get the fantasy roll. It consists of spicy white tuna, tuna, jalapeño, and avocado. She compliments it with a recommended side of spicy mayo. The fish is very fresh, the rice is a good sticky consistency and the flavors are not too spicy. Since I am a non fish eater I dined on the chicken teriyaki. I will say the presentation of my dish and hers are high quality. The chicken is cooked perfectly tender and juicy. The meat is good quality, which I can’t always say is a common occurrence. The rice was perfect and sticky and the vegetables were fresh and cooked just enough that they were still crunchy. My only complaint is the teriyaki sauce lacked a bit of flavor also, a bit bland. The chicken is not cooked in the teriyaki it is poured over it after the chicken is cooked and cut. The portion sizes are good for the price as well. Over we both agree on a rating of 4 stars, we recommended giving it a try sitting in or taking out!

Been eating at Matsu for a while now mainly out of convenience bc Peeking House is next door and I sometimes pick up take out from there at the same time.
Don’t want to rain on anyone’s parade with the 4 to 5 star reviews but when it comes down to the quality of fish for sushi and sashimi its just not good, it average at best or below. Sure I know they have their list of rolls and concoctions spicy sauces blah blah blah which taste good in you mouth but all its doing is masking what really counts the quality of the fish.
If you want decent sushi/​sashimi quality fish don’t bother with this place, I had it for the last time today, it’s not worth it although the prices are low does not make up for the taste. I rather drive further out to satisfy my craving then settle for crap that leaves me wondering why I bothered with this place yet again.

Best sushi we ever had! We had the Garoll and the Sumba tuna roll ~ delicious! Wait staff was kind and courteous. Explained dishes well. Highly recommend!

Such a great dinner at Matsu! We had wonderful service, unbelievable selection, and great food, all for a good value.
Owner walked around, was involved and watching all that went on. Staff were attentive and pleasant.
We ordered a number of small items (sushi, appetizers, salads and soups) all were delicious ! We left satisfied and didn’t break the bank. Will absolutely be back!

Having passed Matsu a thousand times, I went there last night with my ten year old son. He loves sushi, so I thought I’d give it a try.
I was delightfully surprised by the look of the place. It was tastefully decorated. The staff was very nice as they welcomed us and their English impeccable. They made my son feel very much at home! He had a bubble tea, which he never tried before and he gave it two thumbs up. I started with a green salad and he had Gyoza– both were great. I then had the Tuna Hana– fresh tuna blanketed over spicy tuna, guacamole and black caviar– OMG good! My son had salmon sushi… Everything was great. I have found my new go-​to sushi /​Japanese restaurant! Best I’ve had in Jersey!

I have used Matsu for party platters on several occasions. Their prices are reasonable and there is never a piece of sushi left on the platter!

There are a lot of sushi places in Bergen County, but it’s rare to find a sushi place as consistently delicious and fresh as Matsu. The special sushi rolls are great; I’d recommend the TNT roll or the Monster roll, but their Chirashi is also fantastic. Their lunch boxes, as is typical for most Japanese restaurants, are a good deal as well; the salmon teriyaki box is a favorite.
Where they’re slightly lacking is in the soups: tempura udon and tempura soba aren’t what you’ll want to get here. Although the tempura itself is fine (which reminds me that the avocado tempura appetizer is THE way to start the meal), the udon/​soba soup doesn’t have much in terms of its flavor. Their noodle dishes, in general, are all okay, but probably not worth the money.
Overall, I’d come here if you’re in the neighborhood, but if the trek’ll take longer than 15 – 20 minutes, there are other places to try.

If you want tasty and fresh sushi, without breaking the bank… this place is it. Don’t forget to bring your own sake, they will warm it up and refill throughout your meal. Avocado tempura appetizer is terrific. We keep trying new things on the menu, and so far have not been disappointed. Again, no frills, with very good food and adequate service.

Chose this restaurant because of the solid ratings on Unilocal.However, when my wife and I dined there on a recent Sat night, we were very disappointed with the experience.
First the hostess tried to seat us at a tiny two-​top by the front window. We tried it but it was too cold so we asked to move (PS, they unsuccessfully tried the same with others who came in). That seemingly innocent request seemed to do us in for the night, as the waiter who inherited us was at best indifferent, at worst argumentative. Not to mention — we were sitting there for 30 mins before the edamame we ordered as an appetizer finally appeared on our table.
Good was pretty good when it finally came. But when a waiter disputes your claim about a dish not appearing as described in the menu. The waiter /​service left a bad taste, we won’t be back.

Best place in the area. After having a horrible experience at sushi village my fiancée and I decided to go back to matsu. They have unbelievable service and really care about the customers and food is great! It is quite and the ambience is just perfect!

Our family loves this place! Like a great neighborhood sushi place but with higher quality food than you might expect. Interesting menu… efficient service. Highly recommend!

This place gets a special five stars for its management style — Alice, the owner has a splendid way of engaging with the patrons in a way that makes one feel they’re back home– eating from ‘mama’s kitchen’. We love this place! It’s our «go-​to» for sushi and have never been disappointed. The food is consistently fresh and beautifully prepared. Service is great too!

Very quiet, romantic and charming place. The sushi could be a lot better, but the service is excellent. I went on a couple of dates here, and it was very intimate and pleasant. Get the teriyaki chicken!

Came for a birthday dinner. Ordered the roll special along with the fire dragon. Table ordered several appetizers.
Service was quick and attentive. Worth coming if in the area.

Very good sushi restaurant. The sushi bar is perfect. The Sushis are well calibrated like in Japan. The fish is definitely fresh. The staff is really fast and almost know exactly when you need him to come. Overall very nice experience and cheap lunch. The bentos are just very nice for the size, the quality and the large choice. The restaurant starts to be crowded but the service stays excellent. One of the best sushi in bergen and clean.

I would give this place four stars, but boy it’s expensive, or maybe I’m ordering too much… I don’t know! The owner is very nice and outgoing, one time I was missing a few things from the order and had to go back, but she said she’d give me a credit. I didn’t particularly want the credit, I wanted the food… otherwise I’d have angry people in the house. Thankfully I only live a few minutes from the place! Other than that the food is really good.
